DIY, powerglide build. Now, I'm not a professional transmission builder at all. But powerglides are pretty simple for the most part. Mike got all the parts and pieces to put his back together. He has some good pieces here so this transmission should be just what the doctor ordered for some reliability. The 1.69 planetary will for sure make the car leave a tad softer, which means he can throw more power at it.....lol

Assembly tip...go to the office supply store and get yourself some clear plastic folder sleeves. When your putting the piston in the drum, put two sleeves inside the drum. One on the inside (small diameter)and one on the outer side and your piston will slide right in. You will have less chance of cutting the seal than if you use a feeler guage or seal knife.

Dig that idea. I thought what good is a feeler if you still slice 1 of your rings on it going in.

Man I was happy to see this video pop up, although I watch all of your content. Just so happens I just got my 1.58s from sonnax and need to get them installed. They are very proud of the 1.58s by the way! I’ve never been in a power glide but after watching this, I’m gonna give it a try.

First of all you are one of my favorite youtubers and have been watching you since the beginning...honestly respect the fact that you do such a wide array of your own stuff...that being said, i build race powerglides for a living and so much is wrong here...a transmission, much like an engine, is not a good place to do the old "that's close enough, i think it;ll work" thing. For one your leaving a lot on the table performance wise and secondly with the expensive parts that go in one of these units if not installed properly it will hurt if not kill their lifespan. Respectfully, i hope no one builds their transmission like this.

@@TurboJohnRacing to tight in reverse, to loose in high, you never showed a gov support(im assuming you installed one), never checked high hub end play, those cases have a ton of variance in servo bore depth and there are specs that differ based on pressures you'll run, there are a few other things but not to give away trade secrets, lol....and you put park pawl spring backwards, lol, although it seemed to work. The thing is, it'll work i'm sure...it's just not gonna be as good as it could be buddy...i'm close in NC, if you ever want me to help you or your program look me up on f-book and i'd be happy to assist

You can put 2 clutches on top of each other because their splined they won’t spin on each other I have taken the material off of one side of 2 clutches and put them metal to metal to get the right clearance

I was always told to soak the clutches over night to let the saturate, then check your clearances. Just from how I was told to do it, I know everyone has there own preferences. I have not done a glide only th400 th350 and 2004r. One last note I was always told to use loctite 518 on transmissions not silicone. I know splitting hairs.

Nice overview. The last Trans I built was 4l60e for my daily Rado. Used alto reds and kolene steels and full width band kit from summit. Did the upgraded shell, double sprag I think from borg warner, vette servo kit, valve body kit. It works great and hope it stands up to pulling car trailers well. I was just thinking the other day I'd like to try a glide for my car I'm going to race. That's way easier to build than a 60e. Thanks for the video buddy.

Always good videos TJ but the park pawl is in backwards and you should loosen your reverse clutches up some more as it will drag on the clutches being to tight . Also need to tighten up your high gear clutch are they are to loose .

The minimum clearance is critical to avoid clutch drag. You have to remember they are wet clutches and the film is what makes it slip like a bearing when it's disengaged. More clearance puts delay in the engagement but it will grab the same until it hits the piston travel limit.
