The principle is simple. You can use anything that conducts electricity and has the approximate surface area of a finger tip, but the tricky part is to have it transparent AND to have the right tactile response. You can experiment with the size and shape of the tip. The curved shape I came up with provides a gradual transition from a flexible tip that flattens on the screen but then stiffens to give a good tactile response, a bit like a fountain pen.

Larry Steinke do you know where to find antistatic paper?

Tuionuku Afu you could try to ask at any computer shop if they can give you a spare anti-static bag. Electronics parts and modules come in these and usually they through them out after installing the parts.

Could you tell me how to make a mechanical arm hold and mark with a stylus? do you have to add/make a capacitor of some sort? thanks.

I had a pressure sensitive stylus for a regular drawing tablet (not on the screen) and the design bothered me. I could not achieve the lightest touch as I would in traditional art by having the pencil very close to horizontal to make a very faint line. So the pressure sensitivity became almost worthless to me. I actually sharpened it! I realized the plastic part unnecessarily prevented the degree of angle I could achieve. After this, I was more able to do what I wanted except the bulkiness of the stylus itself was somewhat limiting. Looking at your design, I believe it is a superior design for applying pressure sensitivity as the pressure could be detected through the flex of the material instead of raw pressure. Perhaps this is worth the time and effort to innovate around this or patent it? I am perplexed at how strange the styli are to a traditional artist who has long ago thrown out any notion of adhering to holding the pen in a fashion similar to when one is writing. Your design seems to allow for holding the stylus very horizontal and even gives a degree of natural physical feedback on the amount of pressure applied, perhaps in an even superior way to natural art tools.

Will definitely be trying this out! Thank you for sharing. Out of curiosity, why does it need both layers of plastics to be used? One for sturdy shape and the other for capacitive touch effect?
@larrysteinke18394 жыл бұрын
Shweta Sharma, yes exactly. the conductive antistatic foil is what gives the capacitive effect acting like the skin of your finger. the clear plastic is just to give it the right stiffness so it feels right to the touch. just try it with a piece of that antistatic foil in your hand to get a feel for how it works and what size and shape works best for you. essentially it should be the approximately the size of your small finger nail. when it is layered together with a stiffer plastic and curved then it gives a nice feel. make sure that the ant static foil is on the side that touches the screen and that it makes contact with your hand some how. i used a metal pen housing so the foil conducts through the pen to the hand.

@larrysteinke18394 жыл бұрын
@Ujveer Singh , you're right, I probably should, but the idea is pretty simple and I show how the main foil part is made at around 4:00 in the video. You can use your own creativity to attach this foil to a metal pen or metallic tube of some sort. Just use something metallic so that there is conductivity between your hand and the conductive foil. You can also experiment with the size and shape of the foil/plastic part before mounting it on a pen or metal tube.

At 5:50, What brand of pen did you use to put the static paper in?
@larrysteinke18393 жыл бұрын
i used an Edding 405 pen marker. it was very convenient because it has a metal shell but a plastic tip that's easy to cut and put the foil inside. but actually you can use anything that's the right shape and has some electrical conductivity. you just need to make sure your hand has a connection to the foil somehow.

It has been so difficult for me not having a stylus handy to write in a pinch. Hopefully, this solves that. I’m very aware that Steve Jobs did not want a stylus for the iPhone. Lol 😂
@larrysteinke18393 жыл бұрын
@@tsairox6035 you're welcome! The Apple pencil brings some pretty nice features like pressure sensitivity and tilt angle etc., but it does require a different touch screen electronics which is why it isn't available on the iphone. the basic touch screen technology though is amazingly accurate and precise but it requires the surface area of a finger tip to trigger it. it then calculates very precisely the center of this area, but with your finger you can't take advantage of this precision because you can't see the contact point. with this transparent stylus you can see what you're doing and get very precise. there are other designs based on this same idea, like the Adonit, but they don't have a nice tactile feel. with my idea you can play with the size and shape of the foil and plastic to give a nice feel so that it bends a bit without deforming too much. first just try it with a piece of that conductive foil, then add a layer of some other clear plastic to give a good stiffness. curving it adds to the stiffness, something like a fountain pen. then it's just a matter of mounting it in a good pen shaped holder that allows some electrical connectivity between your hand and the foil.
