DIY PVC Adjustable Hurdle for Under $15

Travis, thanks for the video, much appreciated, my 14 year old son is a keen hurdler and wanted hurdles for training but we were balking at cost. We followed your instructions and after a couple of hours and $200 we now have 10 hurdles. Sturdy, light, rust free and inexpensive, perfect. We used 1” for the top bar as couldn’t find 1” to 3/4 elbows. I also brought a PCV cutter for $14, best idea ever, can’t believe I’ve been using a hack saw to cut PVC pipe for the last 20 years 😩

Cost was about $30 each with stuff purchased from Lowes today (April 27, 2024). The side elbows were expensive at nearly $10 per hurdle. End result is very good though, thanks!

THANK YOU!! I'm a hurdle coach and I have been hauling those horribly heavy folding steel hurdles for years, and this is the first PVC hurdle tutorial that I think I can pull off that is adjustable, has the crossbar in the back, and gave a good idea for weighting the front. Looks like I could break them down and carry them in a backpack which is necessary since I get to the track on a bike. Question - you said you used caulking and fishing weights to give the front leg some weight. Do you mean that you put in fishing weights (or you mentioned we could use sand) and then put the caulking behind it to hold it in place? I'm not very handy and have never used caulk so I wanted to check before I go out and get started. Thank you!

Hello Travis. May I know on how to make an adjustable hurdles for under 12 years kid. How long should I cut the main pole and the adjustable pole? I thought I want to start from 46cm and will be adjustable all the way to 76.2cm for under 12. Hope you can help me with the measurement. Thanks brother

I would for sure! I just made these during the pandemic because I had some free time and the ability to make some myself. At the time PVC was drastically cheaper than the cheapest pre-made ones.

Good stuff for places with little to no wind, and for kids and girls. I do not recommend these for more advanced hurdlers, particularly guys because their hurdles are (much) higher. 1> It can make them less committed over actual, heavy hurdles 2> when they do hit one, they're not programmed to deal with the disturbance 3> ever seen races with real hurdles flying and bouncing? a plastic hurdle would turn in the air so fast or bounce back so quickly that it may trip you

I made these during the pandemic for hurdle mobility and steeplechase drills when getting access to a track/hurdles was not an option. These are not intended to be used in a race-specific scenario for high-level athletes. I don't think any high-level track athlete is out here replacing their real hurdles with PVC ones but PVC hurdles > no hurdles at all. These are intended for athletes, coaches, etc who may not have regular access to track hurdles.

​@@Travis_Mahoney True, it's better than nothing. Though I'd probably destroy them soon, out of frustration. Rarely do we have little to no wind over here, so they'd fall over regularly. Fortunately for my peace of mind I have access to normal hurdles 🙂
