funny thing that you posted this bc I just built my own version of it last week haha! I am the assistant greenhouse manager for Penn state and they throw out sooo many extra parts that I wanted to make a whole setup with leftover waste just like this to inspire people to grow plants in a cheap and cool way. the thing i built is a old hotel caddy with a flood and drain table suspended by ratchet straps from the top metal frame so that you can level the bed regardless of the surface its resting on. my goal is to grow strawberries for anyone who comes into my office using waste fertilizer gathered from fertilizer samples that would otherwise be poured down the drain. Awesome rig and great use of 3d printer. When students ask about cool hydroponics systems I'll refer them to these videos!

I very much enjoyed your presentation. WOW, I never liked the mechanics of all of that. You guys tend to make things harder then what it needs to be when you are trying to out-do each other. I am a female who enjoys using the gutters but not the use of a pump. I do kratky hydroponics. What I would like are the end caps that you use with the pvc pip attachment. I do hope you have some that will fit my small, flat, plastic gutter. The same size as yours. Thanks

Hello there - I have 2 6ft gutters on 2 levels of a stainless steel rack. the top gutter is plumbed to the lower level gutter directly below it. used black poly tubing, input and output shut-off valves and is basically a gravity system. My problem is the water is too high in the gutters and I get a bit of flooding. It's my understanding that you are not supposed to "drown" the net pots. How do you get equilibrium in the system?

Very interesting, wish I had the extra space for something like this, will do it in the future!

Do you feel feel safe growing plants in non-food grade plastics? And, do you have any research that confirms the safety of the 3D printed parts, gutters, and pvc? (Since I assume they aren’t all the same type of plastic?)
@TechplantChannel9 ай бұрын
I think about this a lot actually. as far as eating food from the 3d printed parts im not as worried because its PLA, Im sure its still toxic but from what Ive read about 3d printed parts its more of the air issues while its melting the plastic. prints are typically not food safe when it comes to like making a cup or bowl to drink from because they have tons of small cavities bacteria can chill in. but im not directly eating from it so im not to concerned. I have done some reading around PVC and vinyl and i don't think its good for you. I will have to revisit it but I thought a bulk of the bad issues come from the sun cooking it so im hoping indoors where its like 50f it doesnt off gas or leach. this is a good comment and i should revisit it
@TechplantChannel9 ай бұрын
ive done some digging, the info is very iffy and hard to come by but the gutters are made of PVC. www.homedepot.com/p/Amerimax-Home-Products-3-in-x-4-in-x-10-ft-White-Vinyl-Downspout-M0793/202091124?emt_ppq_vfpd the maker answered some sorta relevant questions. so no BPA and they didnt mention them being unsafe for guiding water to the veggie garden. also from reading, there are markings on PVC pipe that tell you if its safe ( schedule 40/nsf-61/nsf-pw ) also you should make sure your solvents are also marked like this. im also seeing you should not heat it to bend it. so i think its safeish. thanks for bringing this up and if you ever find any info about this let me know. appreciate this concern so much and it helped me sorta re evaluate!
@thess5189 ай бұрын
@@TechplantChannelIn am not one that gets overly concerned with “toxic plastics”. We put a lot of things in our bodies that are probably just as bad if not worse. If you feel this is a potential issue of concern. You could finish the plant in glass or another inert material and change the water daily and dilute the “toxins” from the plant. Just a thought.
@TechplantChannel9 ай бұрын
@@thess518 yeah Im not overly concerned but I do like having an awareness a bit just to weigh my options, I like your end idea tho its good

@NotOnlyNull8 ай бұрын
I really love the application. The manufacturers of the 2 in. x 3 in. x 10 ft. White Vinyl Downspout reccomend against using their products in hydroponics. NSF-61* rating is required for safe use. *Food grade or other potable water ratings could work, too 😊
