DIY Raw Dog Food | 2022 Update

This is how I feed my dog a raw food diet in 2022. Inflation has made it a bit more expensive but it's still cheaper than kibble and WAY cheaper than made for you raw food out there on the market right now. In this video I show you where I get my dogs food, how I prepare it, store it, and feed it to him.

Thx for the update! I've been adding more and more raw to my dog's diet for the last year. Even at 5 years old we see a noticeable difference in his energy level and overall health. Your first video(s) on the subject helped me by making it easier and less stressful to start adding raw and perfecting his meals over time as I learn. I may not have gotten everything 100% right from day one, but it is clear that he has been better off the whole time as opposed to just doing kibble and processed canned food. He just had a great checkup, perfect health and the vet says to keep doing whatever i am doing. I know you said you got some comments saying the "recipe" used is not exactly what some others would do. These recommendations change over time and we all get better as we educate ourselves (as you recommended) to do the best we can. My loved pet is healthier and happier because I came across your content last year. That is just a solid fact that is not debatable. 🙂 So, thank you for sharing what you do, it has helped!

Thank you for this video. Ten years ago, we started feeding our dogs homemade dog food. Unfortunately, the 1st gen recipes relied heavily on carbs. (I'm still convinced even with the higher carbs it was healthier than dry commercial kibble.) They lived well past the estimated age range for the breed. Nonetheless, we're still learning and we're using this recipe with hard boiled eggs we put through the grinder as well (we have an abundance) to feed our new pup. Have adopted your feeding method for my five year old Lab. Ended his diarrhea! So glad to not be in the "what dog food is best" endless circle. One thing I do different is for treats I give him raw sweet potato. Usually peel and cut up four or five medium to large size, then freeze them in glass containers. Also add soft boiled eggs to his meal several times a week. He has never been healthier or happier. On behalf of Deca (Deeka) and myself thanks.

It takes us just over 2 hours a month preparing her food that includes grinding and cleanup. We also dehydrated 2 lbs beef liver then cut into small cubes, freeze and use for her treats

Sprocket is AWESOME. What a handsome devil. While my wife and I are trying to transition our girls, a 5 year old American Pitbull Terrier, a 4 year old Doberman, and a 1 year old Doberman, away from kibble we have NEVER done anything but veggie snacks or chicken hearts, etc. So awesome to see others doing the same. I work with people who give their dogs macaroni, cookies, ice cream, etc. They always get pissy and say What????? They’re still alive and they like it!!! Thank you for the info. Yes, it is ironic that friends who feed the worst foods (like Iams kibble or Science diet kibble) are the most vocal about criticizing those of us who feed raw and/or home cooked, balanced food to our dogs. I think it is their way of feeling less guilty about what they feed by acting holier than thou despite the horrific ingredients listed on the kibble labels and all the tragic recalls.

I love how you have him wait a moment before eating, when people come over to visit they are always surprised that my boy will wait for as long as I ask him too. It helps to reinforce that hierarchy.

I had a Bouvier des Flandres who would do that. I would put his food down in front of him and say "Wait", then I would walk out of the room and into the kitchen to get an egg or something extra. I would return and he would be still be sitting there patiently. I would crack the egg into the bowl, mix it, step back and wait a moment. The entire time his eyes would never leave my face. He never looked at the food, never made a sound of protest. Just sat there quietly and attentively until I said "Okay". Only then would he look to his food and eat. It always impressed people who witnessed it. No matter how long I was gone or how long I took to say "okay", he waited.

Raw diet is the best thing I ever did for my dog 6 years ago. Never had a stomach issue or diarreah since. Fur has never been softer or smoother. I buy mine pre-made because she's only 11 pounds and it doesn't make sense for me to waste the time when it only costs 30 bucks a month to feed her by buying it, but for a large dog you 100% need to go your route.

1:30 We use home depot 5 gallon buckets with liners to drop the grind in. stays cleaner and easier to handle. We grind about 170+ pounds of hind quarters alone. 250+ lbs when we package up. Good for about 2 months on food feeding our dogs 2.3% of their weight

Watching your process and hearing your insights have been incredibly helpful. As I embark on this new feeding regimen for my dog, I have a few questions about the transition: 1- Is it normal for their stool to be less frequent or smaller in volume compared to when they're on dry dog food? 2- I noticed you use lean meat in addition to leg quarters. Could you share your reasons for this choice? 3- I'm considering triple grinding the meat, especially since I plan to initially cook it to ensure the bones are thoroughly crushed. Are there any downsides to this method that you're aware of?

Back when I started I did it myself and every Sunday was entirely devoted to meal prepping but I also knew damn well what was going into it. I’ve been using k9 raw, prior to that an amazing family run business that went out of business. It’s so damn expensive I can’t keep up anymore with companies. So far I can tell biggest bang for your buck as far as company raw food is k9 rawfed and the next one up is RAW. Both would cost me about $389.00 ish for my mini Aussie and my massive husky/Aussie mix. Barely last over a month and just can’t keep doing it but I also refuse to go back to kibble as raw has improved my dogs lives tremendously so now I’m looking at doing it myself again

Why are some of you giving her a hard time blah blah blah. Look, I’m a Retired Vet Tech who left veterinary medicine because of all of the bullshit. We were always told to feed diets like Science Diet, Iams or Eukanuba which are absolute CRAP. What they are feeding is way better than any processed, starchy food that I’m pretty convinced is not food at all. Add veggies, fruits whatever you want but currently thoughts are changing from the belief that canines are omnivores to now believing they, like cats, are in fact true carnivores. So if that’s the case then do they really need veggies and fruits?? They for sure don’t need grains. Nuff said. I love her videos and I give her kudos for jumping into the fray to help others help their pets…thank you!

I've experimented with all kinds of raw feeding and its a pain to get it nutritionally balanced every meal... Your simple approach is appealing to many people starting. I would encourage you to evaluate the idea of adding 1 egg 4x/week, 1 whole frozen sardine 2-3x week, broccoli sprouts if easy to find, and a dr mercola meal mix packet 1x daily to get the micronutrients your big pup may be missing. It was formulated by a holistic vet and the creator of the world's first raw food diet. The freeze dried organs are so much easier than raw organs every meal

It’s not necessarily to struggle with exactly balanced, everyday, it’s actually a good plan to not feed everyday. Mixing it up, just giving good appropriate food over time will balance out. Being a little hungry every now and then is beneficial. Dr. Ian Billinghurst Veterinarian Surgeon. What matters is appropriate diet. I've been feeding Raw to my dogs and cats for over 10 years. The only suggestion I have is to add some different protein sources although it is good that you were adding the beef organs along with the chicken meat and bones. Throw in a couple of cans of sardines in water here and there. And some raw eggs with the shell smashed up. And maybe you do this, you said that you found meat at the store on sale so just look in different areas. Pork is a good thing also. And I know the emphasis is try to be "complete and balanced "but nobody truly knows what that is. They think they do but they really don't if you push them hard enough on the topic. Even the guy who came up with the barf diet plan, Dr. Billingsley or Billingham?, Admits that they don't really know what complete and balanced means. I would be a little concerned that your dog is going to get a chicken allergy if that's all he eats so just mix it up a little bit more would be my only suggestion.

I generally mix raw with kibble. My two dogs get two raw eggs with raw meat/poultry. My female husky mix gets green lipped sea mussels supplement mixed in, my old dog gets Triacta maximum strength for his joints. For an old guy He's hoppy. While my girlie has a suicidal curiousity

I was the same, but for cats. Read all sorts of guides with long lists of artificial additives and was put off. Eventually found a more casual FB group that advocated a more natural and holistic approach and I took the plunge into raw feeding about 8 years ago now. Wow, didn't realise it had been that long. I do make sure to get a variety of animal proteins and organs but I rarely get anything exotic. 80/10/10, chicken, beef & pork muscle meats, chopped. I did buy a grinder at the start but found a supplier that did a 50% bone mince so just buy it pre-ground now. Liver, kidneys, or whatever organ I can find. Plenty of fresh/frozen organ available in the UK. Eggs, pilchards. All mixed up and frozen in containers. 2 hours for 3 months food for 2 cats - £70. Happy, healthy cats. Glad to see that you have balanced it a little more than before - I fully agree with balance over time but it did appear rather unbalanced. Before

I’ve been wanting to transition him into the raw diet but like you mentioned so much info out there I got overwhelmed 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. You made it so simple in your video I’m going to go for it …but now to research the transition as my vet is against the raw diet it’s ridiculous to discuss it. However, I’ve been giving him Instinct the raw brand the wild caught salmon . Love that your feeding your dog a species appropriate diet, I also feed my dogs and kitten a raw diet and its great to see you encouraging others to do the same and showing off how you make it easy to fit into your daily life. However this looks more like a PMR (Prey Model Diet) rather than a complete and balanced whole food diet which in this case would then need more synthetic supplements. Do you add extra supplements not shown in the video to meet his micro nutrient requirements? If not I highly recommend you watch the Paws of prey AAFCO requirements video which basically breaks down the missing pieces generally not found in PMR diets it reaI

One thing that caught my attention was feeding leftover grain from making beer, not sure if hops is included in your mix but please know that hops are toxic and very dangerous to dogs.

It's so cute when he eats the raw treats. I wouldn't want to sound like a crazy person with the following question. What preventative measures can I take to reduce risks of health problems, be them genetic, or not. I have been doing my best to research, because I can't get a dog, unless I can ensure that I'm doing everything properly - health, safety, preventative measures, and so forth. I do my best to ensure my wife and two sons (3 and 5) eat well, drink purified water, are kept safe, healthy, and clean... And I can't see why a dog won't fall into the same level of care, and caution.

Excellent video, however one thing that may help with his hip dysplasia is some weightloss. It reduces the stress on the joints, GSD males Max weight should only be 90lbs especially for a working line. I have a 13 year old male, with severe arthritis (due to his age) and the real magic trick was reducing his weight from 95lbs (overweight) down to 85lbs (healthy weight for him)

He is not a pure GSD. He's mixed with giant Alaskan malamute and they're up to 150. The lowest he's ever gotten is 105 which is where he's been for the past year or so.

Yeah that's understandable. There's definitely a transition period where their bodies have to get used to it. My dog had the runs for a couple days at the beginning but after that it's smooth sailing

It's always best to feed a higher bone percentage and only one protein when transitioning.

So just curious how much of a change did you see with the raw diet ? Also where did you get your containers? I have 2 pups 1 just had TPLO surgery and I'm sick of kibble I think it's causing major health issues. Also ice cubes aka water cookies 😂

We just got this same grinder and began using it this weekend. We noticed that even with the smallest holes on the attachment there are still small bone fragments. How do you eliminate that or does it not affect them since they’re smaller? Loved your video!

Small bits are alright. If you look closely at the bits of bones they should still be fairly spongy for bone and small enough not to cause any obstruction. Cooked/dehydrated bone is the dangerous bit - the fragments from those are much, much sharper and more brittle.

Have purchased raw dog food from the pet shops both the freeze-dried and frozen. I'm looking to make my own as super expensive buying at pet the store speed $150-$200 per week on 2 pitbull rescues. Curious when shopping at the grocery store how do you avoid parasites or does the freezing pretty much kill them?

How did you figure out the amount of each “ingredient” to give them? I have a 6 month old puppy I want to start on raw and I seem to have stumbled upon a calculator that provides the percentages of the types of food that he’s going to need to stay balanced but it’s still slightly confusing for me 😭 I’ll be buying most if not all of what you’ve bought for them and slowly start changing and adding as he grows so thank you for showing everything in detail! It was super informative!

Thanks...I feed my cats raw from Darwins and it is expensive...I want to switch my dogs to raw but a delivery plan is too expensive for large dogs. I want to do this, but the grinder intimidates me as well as the cost of it. I do love how simple your recipe is!!

A good grinder is expensive but it will pay for itself eventually, especially if you figure how much it would cost to do the mail order stuff.

Better yet, don't use a grinder. I had a grinder for the first few years but I gave it away last year and I don't miss it a bit.
