Your one of the view out here on KZbin who make sense to "How to feed raw"..There are a lot of dog food recipe's out here where dog owners forget to add organs, and they actually should be in it for the benefit of you dog.. I fed raw to my dogs for some years but stopped . I want to start again and the way you showed us on 'how to do this' reminds me ..We here in the Netherlands also use the 'gram' system so this makes me happy that you are Canadian. Of course I signed in 😊

Exactly! My girls have been on barf diet almost two weeks and their poops have diminished substantially, as well as their water intake. I was feeding them premium dog food and I swear they were pooping 3 times per day and drank water like crazy. In just two weeks, they are only pooping once per day (small and less smelly too) My husky's coat is soft and luxurious and less shedding. My little one has allergies and gets hot spots and I'm hoping the BARF diet helps her with that.

This has calmly helped me switch to raw food completely! It’s been about 3 months, my dog won’t eat a cut up fish, so I have to blend a raw fish smoothie and freeze it in ice cube trays. When it’s mixed with the probiotic yogurt, coconut oil, veggies and egg, over the meat, he enjoys it. I also made bone broth as you suggested- he loves it! Thanks for your help!

Some dogs don't like the texture of raw fish. You can also give them salmon oil or cooked/steamed/smoked fish. I give my dog a can of sardines sometimes or I cook some fish.
@sandrabulluck1896
@sandrabulluck1896 2 жыл бұрын
Plus, sardines are a very sustainable fish! There are too many in the seas, cause there’s such a depletion of big fish, that eat the sardines. Then, cause of the over population of sardines, they eat all of the greens in the ocean. Which is bad for the ocean. So feeding your dog sardines is a win win!

Do you know what she's allergic to? It might be grain, or additives, but could also be some type of meat. Some people do elimination diet, with just 1 animal meat for a while.. to see how the dog reacts to it. If the dog reacts to it, that type of animal gets eliminated from the menu. Usually chicken. Most dogs do well on lamb or turkey. Variety is always best, so keep changing animals untill you have a couple your dog reacts well too.. But if you're lucky, then your dog does well on all types of raw meat.

Thank you for the ratio demonstration...I have been doing homemade raw for 4 years, and YES is a huge positive impact on my Huskies...I do add more variation on the veggies like broccoli & sweet potatoes, and fruits. Also I love the fact that you showed the kibble with water....Years back, by accident I dropped some kibble down the drain in the laundry sink...it expanded and compacted so tight, water did not break it down, I was mortified that I was feeding that stuff to my pet. Thank again, I really enjoyed your video.🐾❤️🤓

@@dinigi2360 Congratulations on the new family member “Husky” addition. I add veggies zucchini, carrots , broccoli, sweet potatoes, celery, squash, blue berry, eggs, cabbage and sauerkraut (tablespoon spoon) & kefir or yoghurt, it’s great probiotic food.. Meat, I use chicken, beef, moose meat when I can get it, fish. I use frozen small sardines for snack …but I do add omega 3 supplement (adult human ) and also give them glucosamine for their joints. My boys weight is about 62 lb so I feed them about 1lb food a day but I do a small portion for breakfast and a lunch around 2 pm. A lot of the information in the video it’s great for your husky but I do my veggies and add Turmeric and cinnamon it’s great for the immune system. Unfortunately, only two of my six dogs are really interested in eating them. Can I put it all through a meat grinder? I want to use what I have. I know what my livestock are eating and I like the idea of sourcing from myself as much as possible. I have ducks, chickens, geese, quail, and turkeys.

Hats off to you on this info and what you say. I see so many people just get on and make dumb videos about home made dog food. Yours is the best so far I have seen so far and thanks I hope viewers fallow your advice because they need to understand veggies - greens should be around 10% - 15% of the diet. I am lucky I have access to beef tendons - unbleached scalded tripe along with liver and kidneys. You just need to add fibers greens and you can also get sardines in water for omega health to. Don't forget Blue berry's they need these as they are important for the anti oxidants portion of there diet also. Great video I loved it.

The poop comment is real. I did the keto diet about four years ago (essentially the same as a raw dog diet) for half a year, and even my own poops changed. I went from pooping every day to pooping once every two or three days. And the poop was highly compacted and small. And extremely dry, almost to the point that I didn't have to wipe after. Dogs drink more water when they eat kibble, since it's very dry and salty. They drink a lot less water when they're on a raw food diet, since meat already has water content. Kibbles also have a lot of grain usually, so dogs needs to poop more. My dog can hold pee/poo in much better on a raw food diet, so that's amazing :).

Thanks for the video... I have a few real world questions which don't seem to be covered in many of these videos: 1. Raw tends to be more messy, especially full pieces like chicken thighs. Dogs will chew it, put it on the floor, break it up more, etc. This just spreads bacteria and requires cleaning after every meal 2. When traveling, how do you handle feeding if you have other people feeding or if you board your dog? What about if the dog travels with us? For example, we used to go camping for a week or two at a time and our dude came with us... it was very easy to just prepack bags of kibble for the duration and take it with us. 3. To reduce costs, buying in bulk is usually the answer, however that takes up valuable freezer/fridge space which is already at a premium 4. Last but not least, how do we ascertain the health aspect of the food? I know you talk about vet bills/health, but my previous dog was on premium kibble and never really had any issues We'll be getting another puppy next month and I'm really debating whether it's worth the effort to go BARF vs sticking to premium kibble. Thanks!!
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the questions! 1) you can feed large raw chunks outside in your backyard or park to handle the mess or simply chop up your raw pieces to a smaller size. 2) When travelling freeze daily raw portions and you can use them in your cooler as an ice substitute or take kibble for camping trips. A couple days of eating kibble won’t hurt. The last option is to dehydrate your raw into “jerky” for travelling. It’s a lot of work, but can be done over a few days. 3) To cut costs you can team up with a fellow raw diet feeder or two and buy in bulk together without buying too much for yourself. Alternatively you can purchase a small deep freezer for $200 that doesn’t take up a lot of room. Lastly, you can just keep your eyes peeled for deals when meat goes on sale. Talk to friends and fellow dog lovers to see where you can find deals. A market is much better than a grocery store for haggling. 4) This is a much more difficult question to answer. Yes, kibble is fine for dogs, but while foods are better in the long term than processed kibbles in my opinion. Hope that helps!

Very helpful. My little dog has had skin allergies forever and today I decided to look into a raw diet. I actually started doing it when he was a puppy but then *life* got busy and it was much easier to fill a bowl with a bag or container of premade food. His allergies have continued to worsen and I can tell he's miserable. It's worth feeding him right. Thanks again!

Wow! This is great. Thanks for the info. We have just adopted a Great Pyrenees Maremma mix puppy for our Hobby Farm and have switched her from the puppy chow she was getting to a raw diet. I understand she needs an amount of 4 - 6% of her body weight of raw food for optimal growth. We're already doing the 80:10:10 ratio for her but I was curious about what other extras to give her. Coconut oil will for sure help me with all that grooming she needs 😅. If you have any additional info for puppy nutrition I'd love to hear. Right now I'll be browsing your channel for your bone broth recipe because it looks super charged!! Thanks again 😊

Came across this video as I was researching to get my dog into a raw diet. I came to the same conclusion by the amount of poop. If you feed your dog 2 cups of kibble and they poop 2 about cups , what nutrients is their body absorbing?! I am also very interested in your broth formula. Where can I find it? Thanks so much for explaining things so simple. I will now go on to watch the rest of your videos.

Thank you so much for this awesome video. What do you think about putting the food three a grinder? I’ve actually seen lots of people putting the raw food in a slow cooker. I would think that that would take out a lot of the nutrients and I’m new to all this so I really don’t know. My dog just had bowel blockage surgery so I have to be very careful on what I give her. And I’m trying to get her immune system up because she was very sick with diarrhea and was on three different kinds of anabiotic’s. I would appreciate any help thank you

You can absolutely put the raw food through a grinder or blender. Check out some of my other raw diet videos to see it. Do NOT cook it! The cooked bones are brittle and sharp. If your dog is recovering, you can cook the meat only with some rice, give your dog rice water, and or bone broth to help with recovery. Hope that helps.

Do you suggest prepping out 2 weeks freeze the food and take it out the day of the feeding and give it to the dog frozen? Or take out the prepped food a day before and let it thaw?

Hi JJ, The transition from kibble to raw is easy. You can wait 12 to 24 hours from their last kibble meal, then start feeding raw. That period of time is enough for the kibble to get through the digestive system. Thanks for watching!!

Hi. When I first started to feed raw 5-6 years ago, my dog had about 5-6 poops each time I took him for his walk. It happened for about a week. Once he got rid of all the impacted grains, his poop became less. Now he doesn't need to get rid of impacted garbage so he only poops once or twice per walk.

Thank you for posting this. I've known of the BARF diet for a while, but figuring out the percentages always intimidated me. Thank you very much for making it plain and simple, plus the assembly and portioning out meals. Do you think it would be helpful to use raw turkey necks, holding it while your dog takes bites from the ends to teach your dog to chew the bones more carefully (for dogs that are used to gulping kibble)? This was something mentioned to me a few years back by a Rottie breeder who fed BARF to her dogs.

I've always told people to soak the kibble in warm water so it could swell in the water instead of it swelling in the stomach. It's easy to believe it's easier for dogs to get torsion or bloat when given those hard nuggets. I do ask people if they would feed raw.

I'm also located in Toronto and I was wondering where you source your meat, bone, and organs. Its easy enough to find chicken, pork, and beef at reasonable prices but trying to find things like lamb, goat, rabbit, venison, quail, veal, bison, and duck at sustainable prices has been difficult for me. I also find it difficult to find a good source for organ variety. Do you have any tips to find good sources?

Can you give more information on feeding bones? When I was a teen, my mom gave our adult Siberian Husky either a rib or pork chop bone and she totally choked on it! I'm so glad I had taken the (human) Red Cross First Aid class & successfully performed the Heimlich manuever! I have a 70 lb. dog. I only give her those cow femur bones, which are already cut up: she loses interest after getting all the marrow out. There's not much that scares me (I'm on a life-flight team,) but my dog choking on a wedged bone does! What bones, such as spindly chicken bones as well as larger pork and beef bones are safe to give, and do you leave them full size or cut them up?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 9 ай бұрын
Dogs are naturally enclosed to eat bones. If you are truly worried you can grind smaller bones up in a blender or grinder for feeding. Every dog is different, but large, thick beef marrow bones are very sturdy and safe for dogs to chew on. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much for this video!! Quick question, is there any concern about bacteria or parasites when giving raw meat? Also, would it be safe just to give my dog a whole raw chicken? I always get concerned about choking. One time he stole a cooked rotisserie chicken off the counter and there wasn't an ounce of anything left and he was perfectly fine. But I still get a little nervous. He's a 10 year old Brazilian Mastiff by the way. Again, thank you thank you

Joe Linguini The concern about bacteria are for people when feeding raw. The dogs are fine. Yes, you can feed a whole raw chicken, but your dog will also need some organ meat like liver and kidney. Choking isn’t a problem with raw. The problem is cooked bones are very brittle. Stick with raw and supervise feeding if you are concerned. Thanks for watching!

Dogs can handle more than humans when it comes to parasites, but there's always a small chance of that. So good hygiene and freezing helps. You're lucky your dog was fine after eating the cooked chicken. Cooked bones can splinter in the stomache, it's hard after cooking. Raw meaty bones are fine, they are much softer. Since you're dog is already 10, only give him soft bones. Necks and wings. Other parts might be too hard for him.

Yes, or you give them meaty bones for 3 days a week and then the other days are for muscle meats and organ meat. It's easier to calculate per week. But you can also give them meaty bone, muscle meat and organ meat every day in smaller portions. Whatever is easier for you and best for your dog. I make weekly menu's myself and make sure each week there's enough variations (at least 4 different animals every month)

Hello, Terrific video and engagement in the comments! I'm going to be getting a 5 month old English Springer Spaniel in a week and I've been researching. I was thinking budget wise that I would do half kibble and half raw. From my research I've gathered that its okay but not to feed a dog both at the same time. It's suggested one in morning and one at night. What is your opinion? Thank you and love the video. I look forward to more videos.

@Optimific Hi 👋🏻, Thanks for the support! I make an effort to read every comment and reply. Congrats on your new puppy! You can feed both kibble and raw as long as you give your dogs system time to digest either completely. While this is doable, it’s not ideal. The kibble and raw digest very differently. I wouldn’t recommend mixing them. If budget is a concern, I’d say do some research into sourcing some economical raw options. For example you can put a budget diy raw diet for around to $2.00 per pound. A budget raw diet is still way better than kibble. If you are interested in learning more I have a whole video comparing the cost of kibble vs raw. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!!

That myth came from back in the 70s when people fed their dogs cooked table scraps. COOKED chicken bones, or any other cooked bones should not be fed to your dog. RAW bones are not the same and are fine for dogs to eat without any issues. If you are still concerned about it, you can always break up the raw bones using a blender as demonstrated in some of my other videos on raw diets. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

So the bowl you did was one pound . My beautiful lab who is no longer with me her first year I fed her kibble twice a day . Mileidy Velazco That’s a very common problem. Some organ meats “don’t taste” as good as the rest of their meal. The easiest thing to do is blend the organ meat so you can spread it out and coat your muscle meat. That way your dog can’t avoid or eat around the organs.

My dog doesn't like liver and kidney, heart he does like. I chop it up into small bits and mix it with other foods (veggies, eggs and stuff). I also cook it a bit sometimes, so the outside isn't that raw anymore... Dehydrating organ meat can also help. Sometimes I give a liver sausage. It's not raw, but he'll get some nutrients out of it. I give organ meats seperate, or otherwhise he eats the yummy meat and doesn't eat the organ meat. Sometimes he doesn't eat it and then I give it the next day. If he's getting hungry he eats it. Blending it up and mixing it in some grinded meat meal will help also... The life as a dog mom/dad, oof ;)

Chris Rodriguez Variety is important. You don’t need to switch it up daily, but a few times a month is good. For puppies you need to give them more food each day because they are growing (5% of their body weight vs 2% for an adult dog). Be mindful of puppy teeth as well. You my want to grind up the bones till they get their adult teeth. In terms of how often, I like twice a day after a walk, but it doesn’t really matter too much. Hope that helps.

True. I don't like to starve my dog all day to then feed once a day. All of my dogs have always done well on two meals a day. I saw a vid of a guy who was feeding his greyhound one chicken leg every other day. I felt so sad for that poor dog. That guy needs to do his homework on how to feed his dog

Just lost my baby boy after 13 years. I didn't really know a raw diet thing existed until about a year ago, however I always gave him raw trimmings when I bbq-ed. I also remember from being a child to never give bones. How I understand it today its raw vs cooked bones. Raw is okay. Anyways a lot of rambling, we are going to adopt a new puppy and I want to do this.

carlos Servin A basic starting point for a healthy, adult dog is 2% of their body weight for a daily portion. For a 75lb dog that works out to 1.5lb of raw per day. The ratios for the muscle meat, bone and organs are explained in the video. Hope that helps.

My dogs are princesses and won't eat big chunks of meat, so I blend everything and make patties, and then give them each a bone to chew on as a fun entertainment during the day. And dehydrated meat dice (jerky meat but traditional, without the heat) as training treats. Funny enough, they do eat the eggs whole, the little foxes 😂

@@KindCountsDeb3773 If you have access to outdoor patio, that's the best place. Mine like to carry her drumstick to the grassy area to chew on for a few seconds longer since she can't gulped that down. When it's raining outside which she hates, then I would cut them in smaller pieces and use bigger bowl (use plastic disposable take out dish) or my sister would use an old mat for her smaller dog to chew on the chicken. Hope it helps.

I feed my syberian husky about 1kilo of chicken/turkey/meat + fresh sardines or boiled eggs a day and he still looks a bit on the skinny side, is it normal or am i doing something wrong?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 4 жыл бұрын
Kitsune Dono There’s a lot of variables to consider. Age, activity level, and overall health. If you have a young, very active dog, you may need to increase their daily dietary intake. If your dog is underweight, increase how much you feed in 25% (over a week) increments till you see them gaining weight. There may be a health issue such as worms that may be an issue as well.

So what should my grocery list look like for a month's worth of food?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Magical, Your grocery list for a month will be mostly muscle meat, bone (if your muscle meat doesn’t have bone in already), organ meat (liver, kidney, green tripe) and whatever supplements you choose. If you have a healthy adult dog you can use 2% of their body weight for a starting daily amount of food, then multiply that by how many days you want to go shopping for. If you have a bigger dog, you may want to shop for 2 weeks instead of a month to save on freezer space. If it’s your first time making your dogs diet you’ll also need plastic containers to portion out the daily amount, a plastic tub to mix it all and a small scale. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much for info! My dog weighs 19lbs so rounding off to 20lbs. So about 1/2lb a day? He have liver and kidney problem in early stage so maybe this diet will help. Thank you

@@queenzinfinity492 Hi Pamela, yes, 0.4 pounds per day or 6.4 ounces per day for a healthy adult dog as a starting point. It’s important to note this is just a starting point. Feed a little less if your dog is overweight or a little more if your dog is under weight, highly active, or very young. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
