DIY: replacing brake switch (cruise control not working) Chevy Colorado

Excuse the mess. No tools necessary for this task.
A faulty brake switch may cause cruise control to malfunction, brake lights to stay ON or not work at all.
This process may work for other year Colorado/ canyon and other GM models
I bought the switch at the Chevrolet dealership

Good, concise and viewable to easily change out. Other videos and written instructions describe needing a wrench and screwdriver with no real removal explanation. Thanks! Had to really torque my old one to remove and was afraid to do so until I saw this video.

Thanks. I first noticed my cruise control didn't work, and so checked my brake lights and they didn't come on so I figured that's why my cruise was inop. Gonna swap it out tomorrow.

Many thanks. This is exactly what I need to get my brake lights and cruise working again. If you are trouble shooting with an amp meter as a short in place of the switch the one shown unplug is this video was 191mA. The one beside it was 21mA.

Thanks for the video, in my case after replacing the switch it didn't work for me but a month later I decided to check everything again since the switch have an adjustment for instillation I had to push on the break paddle and then re insert the switch and then it worked for me.

Thanks for the video! Be sure to depress the brake when reinstalling the switch as it can cause brake dragging if you dont. Also you can carefully take apart the switch by lifting the 4 plastic tabs and separating them. Be sure to take a picture of the orientation of the silver and copper contacts as well as the plastic plunger. Remove the 2 contacts by pulling them from the plastic housing and take a wire brush to anywhere there is discoloration or corrosion and put everything back together and see if cruise control works. If not the next place to look would be to ensure your fuse is good next to the battery and all your brake lights work, including the high mount cab brake light, the harnesses attached to the switches, wiring to the PCM, wiring to the throttle actuator motor or the cruise control switch assembly on the steering column itself.

I have a 2010 Colorado. So many problems - over heated due to broken plastic fitting on radiator line, driver door window assembly replaced, third brake light will not come on, engine temp gauge does not work after the over heat, replaced the starter, replaced the blower motor. All before 70,000 miles.

Do you know if you get the same symptoms if your cruise control release switch goes bad??? It would be the one right nxt to that one. I’m asking because I do not have brake lights on the tail end neither on the high lamp cargo lamp the two clear lights come on but not the other two which are the brake at the very top of truck roof. I bought this switch also in your video no luck and my cruise control also does not work. So if you have a bad release switch you won’t be able to get into cruise control even if your brake light switch was good. New bulbs and fuses.

If one is the break Light Switch. Then what is the other switch next to it. I replace the one but not the other next to it. The problem that I am having now is that the Calibers are not releasing sometimes or all of the way. Is the other switch the Break Clutch Switch? I am wondering if I have to disconnect the battery for awhile to see if the computer has to readjust after that replacement was done.

Pisces the other switch is traction control, you might have bad calipers; or the rubber hose brake lines going to your calipers have collapsed

Official Maximum Shock yes the turn signals worked and also the tail lights just no brake lights. Sorry for late response

This is a known recall and the dealer should replace it for free.

Hector Santiago, Replace the second Pedal Switch right next to the break lights, that"s your Cruise Control Release Switch, Part #15109338. I'll suggest replace both switches at once, they get the same usage every time we depress the break pedal.I just cleaned them for now and will order to keep on hand, contacts didn't seen burned at all, just a glazed coat on them, Just don't scratch them too much.

From experience in 2021 if your brake lights come on after you replace the switch and don't go off you don't have it in Far Enough
