Happy New Year! I didn't get that fancy. 😃 I used my Fluke and found resistors that measured exactly 100, 1k, 10k, and 100k and mounted them on a piece of perfboard with a hoop on each end. Accurate enough for me. Like you said, it's not rocket science!

Add two more terminals for sense leads for a four wire measurement. Lose the solder, and rather wrap those resistor leads between the post nuts. It will be way more stable and useful as a shop "standard". There are a lot of different metals touching in there. The solder throws it off and adds even more temp instability. It would be interesting to see how far the % swings with shop temp. You'd be amazed at how much it moves with every degree. Another video would be cool.

Happy New Year. May the force be with you! Don't see me needing this kind of accuracy in my projects but you never know! Voltages can be a bit more critical with some microcontrollers etc!

Happy New Year All! How good are those speaker wire cables from the Fluke? They don't look nearly as uptown as some of the others you have. Good project too, thanks.

+George Chambers Those are actually lamp-cord. Kinda low rent for sure, but heavy cable, low resistance which I zeroed out anyway. Happy New Year

Happy New Year!! Will that value for those metal oxide resistors also change with temperature?
@learnelectronics7 жыл бұрын
+Michael Padovani Yes. There will be temperature drift. I keep my place 68 degrees year round so it shouldn't be a problem.

For a metal foil resistor, the Temperature Coefficient of Resistance is usually between 50 and 100 ppm/K. Read more www.resistorguide.com/metal-film-resistor/ .. Since we are measuring to around five digits, or around 10ppm marker, the drift is unlikely to be too significant at room temperature. It is there though and you need to be aware of it when performing precise measurements. If you want more precision, grab a (significantly more expensive) metal film resistor.

I'm a novice electronics dude, I live in Canada is there any tools that you could recommend, like the Fluke 8840A?
@learnelectronics6 жыл бұрын
Well the 8840a is only about $100 on eBay. You probably won't find a better deal on a high quality used bench meter. But if you are looking for just a handheld, look in my Amazon store for the Uni-T UT61e for around $60 brand new. You can find the link in the description below my videos.

Some anal-retentive viewers may quibble about this 9.985K 'standard' - measured when ambient temperature in your shop is 15F above what it was when you created the box. To them we suggest they watch the "DNA fractionation system" teardown video by 'mikeselectricstuff'. In that we watch him tear into a "crystal oven" to see the lengths designers go to, to assure accuracy of 'standards'. Those anal-retentives could take this project and do likewise... at greatly increased complexity and fabrication.

+Are Jayem Thanks. That's what I'm trying to get across here. For the home hobby shop, close enough is close enough. In fact when I worked on very expensive SONAR gear, a long time ago, three decimal places, with the least significant digit ignored, was good enough.
