Hi Kathy, I am a commercial seamstress and have sewed and installed hundreds of these shade rollups over the years. facebook.com/shadeshoppe. The fabric he used is called saddle tan and it has a 75% sunblock and it easy to sew. Unless its a lightweight and or expensive computerized household sewing machine, most household machine will have no trouble sewing it. I sewed many a shade of this exact fabric on a household machine when I first started. I have since moved on to an industrial machine. An important thing to keep in mind is that you are going to want to use uv protected thread. If you dont and use any old thread you may already have it will rot out on you in a year or less. We use marine grade 1/8 polyester rope as well. On the side seams i always tuck them under to create a neater edge. If any one is interested in a sewn piece of shadecloth with quality materials made to your specifications just message me through my facebook page. You can then install the rollup as DIY Cheap an Easy shows. For instance one his size with all 4 sides sewn of an 85% shadecloth material with a pocket on the bottom side would be $60 plus shipping. I can also provide the rope and eye hooks for installation if you didnt want to source it yourself.

Hi! Great idea thanks for the guide! I have a question about the ropes... why did you have to use 3 separate ones? Could you just use one continuous one to loop under the pvc and back up, or would it not roll up properly?

Thank you! I don't think that would work being that the rope would have to be able to go up both sides and the screen is secured on the back side. If you can figure something out great!... I used the system that was on an older roll up that I had bought from Home Depot years ago. Thanks for the input... blessings!

hi, how about the lock? if i wanna roll the blinds up.

Once you roll up the shade/ blinds then you secure the ropes by winding them around the brackets. That will keep the shade from coming down. Thanks for looking... blessings!

You USED 3 cords on The unit,4 I-Bolts,one for EACH cord then one on END to guide all The ropes DOWN. How FAR FROM END FOR The I Bolts ,looks like one was CENTERED and The OTHER two looked maybe 2ft FROM EACH END?
@diycheapneasy64603 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly!...2ft in from the edge. Not that it needed to be but I liked the way it looked...😁. I'm sure with a shorter shade the distance might be shorter than 2ft.

Hi! Wonderful DIY project and video 😁.I have a few questions for you, what size eye bolt did you use? What kind/size of rope did you use? How did you hem the edges, did you just use plain needle and thread or you used a lacing needle and thicker thread? Thank you!
@diycheapneasy64604 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks! Sorry for the late response but I had thrown away all the packaging from the products that I used so I had to go to Home Depot to get the info and I was barely able to get over there. The eye bolts were 5/16 x 4" The rope was All purpose clothesline rope 3/16 x 100ft. As far as the thread, I used the thickest thread my wife had in her swing box... lol! She had some upholstery thread from years ago that worked out great. I used a medium sized needle not too big and that worked fine. Sorry but I don't know what size it is. I hope this helps and good luck on your project. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask... blessings!

@@diycheapneasy6460 thanks for the reply! We started the project but our problem right now is that the ropes that are supposed to pull up and close the fabric keeps shifting out of place especially when it's windy. How do you make them stay in its proper place?

@@_t__r__ ... good morning! A couple of questions... is the shade secure when it's down? How far are the ropes from the ends? When mine is rolled down I secure the shade in the pvc fittings and then I wrap the rope around the brackets. The rope is usually taut and stays in place. My ropes are about 2ft from the ends of the shade and pvc pipe. I hope this info helps...

Sorry for the late response. You would just tie a knot at the end of the rope. It's nothing too difficult. There's really not a picture to show you... sorry.
