Thank you SO much for this tutorial! I watched it around 10 times and finally finished making them today, and I absolutely love them. My issue was that my carpenter put in replacement windows last year, and instead of insetting the windows so I could put my blinds back up inside the window sill, he made it flat inside, and outside he left the inset window sill. I didn't realize until he'd finished. I really don't know what he was thinking. But this alternative to a roll-up is just perfect, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤

I'm so glad I found this tutorial! This is exactly what I was looking for! Our house unfortunately has shallow-depth windows upstairs, and I've made outside-mount roman shades with the French blackout method for the bedrooms; however, at times we'd like to let some light in while retaining some privacy. We can just mount these inside and layer our window treatments with this now!

This is a great video and instruction. The only thing I’m not sure of is how you get it to roll up so nicely. When I run the cord up and over then down the back, it lifts the shade but more in a wad than the nice roll you have. How do you get out to roll up the bottom?
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare 9 ай бұрын
Hmmm...mine just roll right up! Try getting it started by hand and then continue by pulling the cord. If you're still having problems you can send some pics of your shade via email and I can see if I can figure out what's going wrong. Email address is under the "about" section of my channel.

Can you make these top down as well?
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare 2 ай бұрын
I don't think you can without using a tension roller, but you can make a top down Roman shade. I don't really like the way they look though. You need a board mounted at the bottom, and there are always visible cords.

Thanks for the great explaination and for sharing this vid :D I am trying to make an outdoor shade (about 11 feet wide) and have a few questions. - Does the heaviness of the weight rod matter? (for wider shade, do I have to use heavier rod?) - Can I use hollow rods as weight rods (eg, hollow metal rods or hollow plastic rods that are used for indoor curtains? - If there is a wide area that needs shading, is it better use 2 or more shades or is it alright to use just 1 very very wide one? - Are there anything important to take note about when making really wide shades? 😅😅
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare Жыл бұрын
OK, so I think 11' is way too wide to make 1 shade. I have 3 on 13.5' wall because I don't like seams on my shades as I mentioned in the vid, but if you don't care about that or you have extra wide fabric I'd make at least 2 on your wall. And yes, a rod that has a little weight does help but is not necessary. The most important function is rigidness so the shade rolls up without drooping. and whatever you choose make sure it won't get moldy or rusty. Thanks for watching!

Is it possible to have the shade stop midway and not fully unrolled? In my application, there is nowhere to install a “cleat” to wrap the cord as a measure to hold the shade midway.

I am making it to go on the sides of a pergola. Could you use this method with sheer weave ( what they make roller blinded out of) or would it be too stiff to roll. I know sheer weave roller blinds have the chain/ clutch mechanism.
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare 26 күн бұрын
Without putting my hands on the fabric I can't make any promises, but if this fabric rolls nicely with a clutch roller I see no reason why it wouldn't work!

Also, just a tip, a heavier weight rod gives better results than something light like a wood dowel.

So sorry if you mentioned this in the video and I missed it...but do you happen to remember the cost of the materials for this project? Your patio appears to be about the same size as mine so I'm just trying to get a rough estimate to know if its doable before I decide to make the long trek into town!!
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare 10 күн бұрын
@@fivebuckfriday I don’t remember my cost for the materials because I made these years ago, but it can vary immensely because the price of the fabric can vary immensely! I got mine at a clearance warehouse, so that helped a lot. The only way for you to know is to calculate your yardage and shop around. Just make sure you get outdoor rated fabric or it won’t last.

what needle size and thread weight are best?
@ASquarePillowIsntSquare

It just depends on your fabric and your machine! For shades exposed to the elements like this I use 100% polyester thread.
