Hey y'all! We are so excited to get started with DIY's in our new house! This is just the first of many! So, we decided to go room to room and we started with Darryl's music studio! I decided to go with a rustic industrial gentleman feel to it! I chose to go with symmetrical planks versus staggered planks because I wanted a cabin like feel. Staggered planks could look really nice as well. I am so excited for you to see the rest of it!!!
#DIY #DIYer #DIYWoodWall #DIYDecor
Today's video is a quick and easy tutorial on how to make your own DIY Rustic Wood Wall for under $40! It's so easy! It is a perfect accent wall and gives your room so much character!

Wall looks great! A few tips for the next project. Stain first, its way easier and looks better. Stagger the joints, it looks way better that way. Cut the boards to that the ends never meet up on the same line. Thumbs up, you guys did great!

Also... start at the bottom and hide your nails at the top of each peace so they're covered by the piece above.

I would also take the switches and outlets off and put the planking behind them, then re-install with the tabs over the top of the planking so that your covers sit on top of the planking.

You 2 did a nice job on that wall. A technical point - working from the bottom up is easier. First row has the tongue cut off. Put the nails through the back lip of the groove, so they are invisible.

I usually prefer staggered boards, but aligning them highlights the length of the boards in a way that staggering doesn't. It's a very nice look, as demonstrated perfectly in this project. Another thing, that stain color is gorgeous. Great choice.

I've been convinced I had to go with actual pallets (ripping them apart, pulling nails, renting a planner, worried about bugs & musty wood smells, etc...) You guys did such a great job. Your husband's patience and attention to precision cutting really paid off. This look adds a lot of rustic warmth to the room. Your choice of staining colors came out gorgeous. I love the fact that the wood is super clean & all the same thickness. Because of your video and how well your accent wall came out, you've convinced me this is the way to go. Thank you both for sharing your awesome project !! Kevin - Greensboro, North Carolina

graceful + lovely You're not boring! I was looking to improve the ideas I already had in mind (which were multicolored staggered planks) but when I saw this, I LOVED IT! I see the staggered planks style EVERYWHERE, and that sorta turned me off. I guess no one listened to you when you said that you wanted a 'cabin' feel to the walls-which means layered out exactly the way you have them here. I honestly like this better. Thanks for the info on where to get them. Also, thanks for the vid!

Looks great but I personally would chop up the strips so there were staggered joints ...sort of like bricks ....otherwise you end up with a seam which bug me forever. Also I think I would use a few different strains and stain all the cut pieces and THEN nailem up randomly ...if you can picture that? Also by pre-staining you don't get the unfinished gaps you had to use a little brush on meticulously ....of course I have the benefit of learning after the fact from your experience! Again looks great! Love it!

Couple suggestions: 1. The joints where one piece butts to another (end to end, horizontally) board should be randomly spread out. For example, between the door and the closet door, there should have been some joints created. Every board being solid between the doors makes it look fake. Just like on a big, open wood floor there should have been some staggered joints. 2. For a remodel job you would have been better staining all the boards BEFORE you cut them or hung them. This makes for far less danger of messing up the carpet or the trim or even the paint on the remaining painted walls. Also, by pre-staining the boards, you can see what you’re hanging and where; providing you the ability to design the coloration of the wall. Finally, pre-staining means the ONLY things you need to stain, once the wall is finished, are the ends of the pieces you cut and some minor touch-ups. Wall did look great; but a few little changes like these would make it THAT much better! Hope this helps.

I saw a reply to someone's comment where you said that you didn't want to stagger the joints. I didn't see any explanation as to why though. Just personal preference or did you have a method behind it? In future, I'm pretty sure those stain pads are designed for when you're staining decking. I don't think they're really meant to hold the stain into the pad when you've got it held up against a wall like that. I would imagine that if you were to stain a floor you would find it quite useful as you wouldn't have to get down on your knees like with a rag. Something else you might think of doing is staining the wood prior to putting it on the wall. That'll let you get all of the sides very easily... just something to think about if you do something like this again at some point in time. I really like the color and the character that the final product brings to the room. Overall - Good job!

Looks great , nice 1st time project. A few suggestions if I may...... take the time for small details, take the door moldings and switch plate covers off so your wood covers properly. They make switch box and receptacle box extenders to bring them out flush with the new walls. Staggering the length of the boards will look much better IMHO. You did great and will do even better in the future!
