Attention to viewers! This isn't factually correct! He gives some great information but a lot of it is his understanding. The way temp is controlled Freeze to Fridge is quite simple on this fridge, it uses a diverter valve (solenoid) to cool either the fridge or frezer, this valve can be seen at 2:34 on the white bracket to the left of the compressor. These valves can fail and also cause the Fridge or Freezer only cooling. I post this comment as this video miseld me somewhat when troubleshooting my Samsung twin cooler unit.

i totally agree so i have the same case should i only change the diverter Aka.Step valve (in samsung) only , or both compressor and Step valve, i see there is no way to just change the Step valve connector as the part comes with the connector and the capillary lines connecting to the compressor. thoughts?

Valve selects which evaporator gets the freon flow with emphasis on fridge side. It will switch to freezer after fridge reaches the temperature. That is why the freezer newer get its turn. When my samsung leaked freon it was acting exactly like his.

I’ve had nothing but trouble with the top ice maker from the beginning and it’s been replaced twice under warranty. Enough already. @@bkind2182 my new one is Kitchenaid. still working great....The LED lights went out on the top though. It is a pretty easy fix. Replace the circuit board. but the fridge works fine. I think they are made by wirlpool or one of the big brands. I dont think any are made in America.

I agree, somehow everything has been outsourced to China. Back in the 1950's (before my time) products made in the USA were sought after the world over for their reliability and cost. That is when factories were all over this landscape and careers, with a good pension were plentiful. I wish American ingenuity was a thing again. We can thank Congress for making laws that profit companies that send work overseas. That just makes me want to jump up and vote again, lol. I am also ASE certified and do not like what I am seeing on a regular basis. I just tore apart my Samsung fridge today for a lack of cooling in the upper part. It was full of ice and stopped the circulating fan. I had a service scheduled for 2 weeks out! OMG. Then I repaired it myself. That is very satisfying.

Great video. I have an exact same refrigerator which is not cooling. Neither the freezer nor the fridge cools. Tech wants 1200 bucks to fix it so i was looking around for a good video on how to repair. He said the compressor is bad so will need a new one. I am seeing a price range of 200 to 320 bucks for the compressor. Like you we love the fridge bcos of the size and now we are just in a limbo. Thanks much for insight. Great video! Wish I'd been able to find this 6 months ago when I first started having issues with mine. I have/had (having a delivery and replacing it with a different brand tomorrow) the exact refrigerator that was doing the same thing. I live in Lake Tahoe and couldn't find anyone for a month that would come out and look at it or that would even consider touching it. Samsung wouldn't even help me find a certified repair guy since it was out of warranty. When I finally found a repair guy that would come out and look at it from a reputable company. He told me that my icemakers were going bad and that they had to be replaced. He said that the icemakers controlled the freezer function. I'm an idiot and after having him replace both icemakers for a pretty penny, the freezer still wasn't working properly. When he came back a third time to look at it I was told it could be a $600 part or it might be a $20. I'd have to try replacing each part to to see which one it was. He never pulled the refrigerator out to test the compressor even though I suggested it. The freezer finally just stopped working completely I lost all the food in the freezer and said forget repairing it even if it was possible. I'll never buy a Samsung product again not even their phones! I made sure the new brand is something that the local repair guys and friends recommend and can be worked on here. I removed the brand new ice makers and everything I could unscrew on it including the handles. They are taking it away and I don't want anyone "fixing it" and pawning it off on someone else.

You are missing a lot of steps. You can put a piercing valve on the low side and check pressure. Also there is a 3 way valve that switches back and forth from freezer to the fresh section. These valves get stuck. You can check your linear compressor by checking resistance from pin to pin then to ground. The inverter can only be checked with an oscilloscope, there is a 12volt dc line and a 120-220 volts. This at best is only a wild guess.

After seeing this comment, I'm gonna pay the 30 bucks to get rid of the thing before I end up spending 300 just on a new inverted PCB board and then a compressor which I won't be able install myself no matter what because I'm not going to buy a fancy scale, vacuum, and a bunch of soldering equipment, then realize I can't do it, and have to call a professional that will charge 1200$ when I'm already 300 into trying to fix it myself and spending 1500$. I'll just pay 30 and say cya later for someone to pick it up.

Great explanation and video. Much respect for ASE techs. I've turned wrenches for years but many ASE's are on an entirely different level. I have the newer Samsung model. When they run- they are great but when they start to fail...watch out. Ours is starting to fail after 7 years- RF24 French Door. I am very glad we invested ~$599 back in '14 for a "10" year warranty. I believe that, like with many cars, most of them fail after several years just "post warranty, and very much by design." Funny, my EZ Pass battery never seems to die hmmm. Failing fridges simply help to sells new ones. I've read issues about nearly all other "top" brands. If you can find a boring one without an ice maker, without dual evaporators and one that you have to defrost manually (they cool better too- no daily heat event happening up inside thee fridge- I measured the temp on the heating element- shocked to see it got up to 300F!), it should be less maintenance and easier to repair. That said, they are literally adding Wi-Fi and screens on the doors. We are in trouble! I say, buy the nicest one that you will enjoy using but definitely, 100%, BUY THE EXTENDED!

@@ronkloiber Probably but many of the other components are not guaranteed nor labor on those things. Fortunately I sprung for the warranty at PC Richards and it paid off. He installed a new rear cover with fans, a new CPU, new sensors, etc. Our compressor was fine. Keeps around 40 now so it's fine. Ironically, the new cover (inside rear) was about 2lbs. lighter than the old soaked one. I really learned a lot about how a fridge works. It is less about introducing cold to the inside of the box and more about removing heat and moisture.

You should check if the compressor is running at all. It and the fan should be working at the same time. By pulling off the back cover, touch the compressor and if it's not hot or vibrating then it's not running.

Wow, I'm feeling lucky for once. I got this exact model 12 years ago. Started having problems 3 yrs ago. Had frozen pond under bottom drawer of fridge. Had to break it up and remove. Some ice still stuck at back but fridge freezer kept working over last 3 years happened every few months. 2 or 3 months ago, freezer quit, got in and found frozen water on bottom under drawers. Also the seal was not on good. Removed ice, unplug for reset and it went back to working. Top ice maker quit working a month ago and now bottom. Plus last 3 days temps in both going down. Today they're both in the forties, so it's unplugged for now. Researching new fridges.

The fans stop when you open the door. That is an attempt to keep it from icing up if the kids leave the door open. Second don't put 110 volts to those fans. They run on 12 volts. The 3rd wire on the fans is a signal wire. Thats how the computer knows if the fan is spinning or not.

We have one that is 15 years old now, very similar model to this one. Had many problems with the refrigerator evaporator freezing up. After many melting the ice build up on the fridge evaporator every few months I added an auxiliary defrost element and it seems to have solved that problem. Never had ice build up on the freezer evaporator. See Ben’s appliances and junk on KZbin for where to order the aux defrost element for the fridge. I have also replaced defrost sensors and temp sensors and the rubber tubes on the back lower right of the fridge where defrost water drips down into the pan. Based on the comments I see here, I doubt that the fridge is going to last much longer but fortunately that seems to be the only real problem so far. These things are nice looking on the outside, junk on the inside. Refrigerators have been made since the 1940’s, how can a company screw this up so badly?

I think you needed a different tech. His quote alone was crazy! Rarely do home A/C units cost that much to change a 2.5 ton compressor!!!

One thing that has not been said you need a B-tank to solder and it is different then solder second you need a vacuum pump to take air out of the system or you will have a problem charging the new compressor so well there is a difference its not a do it your self unless you know and have a set of gauges and and vac pump.

the stepper valve on the left corner in the video fails and doesn’t allow proper pressure to freezer evap and temperature will only reach 45-50 deg F It’s problematic on the electrolux as well as GE so I’d be fairly certain it’s failed in your case too Regardless, it’s still a sealed system repair Unplug the refrigerator, touch the stepper and plug the fridge back in, feel if the stepper is humming I agree with you as far as samsung goes, stick with cellphones or tvs

The guy told you wrong, the high amps means the compressor is working at a higher pressure low amps means the compressor is running on low pressure

the compressor and fans should not be running all the time. the two evaps are actually considered as one hence the one small orifice tube to the top and larger (not a orifice tube) line to freezer.

If you rewatch your video when you're in the air compressor compartment area the device to the left of the compressor with the black coil and white mounting frame to the left side of the outer cabinet is the three-way valve it should have three copper tubes coming from it

does the three way valve work like a thermal expansion valve? my samsung fridge ice make stopped working and with the ice bucket out there is frost building up around the coil. so much ice that there is more everyday. so i believe that the valve is not closing all the way and it continues to cool . I have the same problem in the fridge compartment where the top coil would continue to freeze up while i was blowing hot air on it. I hope i made myself somewhat clear on whats happening to thus unit. any help would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day

Have the exact... EXACT same problem. Noticed when the lower ice tray was full of water. 1200 to replace compressor. The tech that came out installed a Schrader valve to attach his gauges. Is it remotely sane to just add some r134a to the system based on the specs for the fridge. The tech said confirmed it was extremely low on refrigerant. If the 3-way valve is causing problems you can just replace is with a T-collector. The fridge should work but the accuracy of temp control will be compromised

same model. It gave a difficult time. The mechanics visited thrice and they spent time from compressor replacement to freezer evaporator replacement. Finally declared the Freon was leaking. I couldn't understand if Freon was leaking why all the replacement was done.Lot of time was spent but because of home appliance warranty I was saved from huge bill $$. Note: the Samsung Freeze started giving problems a few months after the manufacturer warranty expired. The bad designed Product should be recalled as per me!

This happened to my refrigerator as well. Mike your problem is not with the compressor, its with the 3 way step motor valve. This fridge can direct coolant to one or the other compartments or both. Your valve broke with it stuck on the refrigerator only. In your video, the valve is located to the left of the compressor. That black thing with the three copper capillary pipes coming out of it. It is also possible that the freezer capillary supply tube is blocked. Its a $85 part but you have to collect the coolant and open up the system. Bummer.

Good video with lots of misinformation...1st don’t try replacing a compressor unless you know what your doing...the “pros” make it look easy but it’s not. 2nd in a 2 coil system if one compartment is at 38 and the other is at 57 look to something other than the compressor...now, if both compartments were at 38 then I’d give the compressor a harder look...3rd the heaters that was spoken of are the “self defrost” heaters...they melt the ice off the coils so you don’t have to...4th Appliances ARE overly complex and more prone to breakdowns because of it. (Retired GE/Whirlpool/Frigidaire contract servicer)

It appears to me that you got a bad technician who obviously did not understand the theory of operation of a dual evaporator refrigerator that employs the three-way valve my suspicions are if the fresh food was Cooling and the freezer wasn't the three-way valve may not have turned to the freezer position fully to allow refrigerant to flow to that coil even the thermistor that sends the signal to the board to tell it to Supply refrigerant to the freezer based on the temperature differences between the two coils and then what happens the one that is further out of Target temperature is the area that is supplied with refrigerant for a period of 15 minutes then the board reevaluate both the misters again and then which area is further from Target temperature based on thermistor reading that's the area that is supplied with more refrigerant this process continues until both compartments are satisfied but if the thermistor is shorted or open the compartment that is suffering will never receive refrigerant

compressor was making a different noise than it was before. So my suspicion is the technician was right. I traced the lines from the compressor and evaporator and condensers. I saw no 3 way valve in the circuit. the lines went through one coil down to the other coil then returned to the compressor. there was only a temp sensor on each coil. the delivery crew for the new fridge said they pick up brand new looking samsung appliances all day long especially refrigerators. It seems to me that samsung complicated a system that did not need to be complicated. therefore it has more problems. We had problems with both freezer and re fridge temps not cooling enough.

I'd replaced the main control board on my Samsung side by side fridge 3 months ago and it has been working like a champ. However, since I increased the cooler temp by 2 degrees to 40 F the other days, the next day I noticed that the freezer temp 0 F on the led display stared flashing suddenly. So I powered the fridge off at the circuit breaker and waited 2 hours before powering it back on. After the fridge was back on for a few hours, the temp on the led display was all over the place and the compressor doesn't seem to stop at all. Led display shows cooler temp at 34 F and it shows freezer at 48 F. Please advise what should I do or check at this point. Thanks a lot !

if the top is cooling and the bottom isn't, its gonna be the diverter valve 90% of the time its 150 at Samsung but you need to sweat it of and back on and change the filter tube vacuum and charge 500 dollar fix if diy its about 200

I have that exact fridge. it started kinda thawing in the freezer & ice would be wetish, then the next day may be rock hard. changed the compressor overload relay, worked great for about 3 days & thought our problems were fixed. Most likely it's short on freon. I had the same exact problem and got it fixed today after filling it up. Tech suspects a leak somewhere inside, but asked me to watch it. If it continues, its better to replace as it would cost about $1000 to repair the leak. Mine is 12-13 years old.

Pain in the ass.. First the leak needs to be found if at all possible, (it might be somewhere not accessible). The system needs to be evacuated and then put in a vacuum too see if it will hold for a certain amount of time. The filter should also be changed as 134a is very sensitive too moisture in the system. $ 1,600 is cheap if it fixes it, but I would invest into new one!!!

2:37 are those lines coming out of the compressor suppose to be frozen when the fridge is working properly? I ask as i recently had it filled with refrigerant/freon or whatever u call it and about a week later noticed there was a minor puddle of water at the rear so, I tool the rear panel that u have off and noticed the lines from the compressor (black round part) were frozen and were leaking about a droplet every minute or so. The fan is working properly and I do not have issues with it cooling or overfreezing so any help would be great

Partial after a while running and not enough pressure from the compressor to power get the top one cold. only bottom partial. Bought new fridge when they came to pick it up the guys said they pick up samsungs every day that look like new with bad compressors.

Most of them are not a compressor, It probably has a leaK. Our Samsung uses ISOBUTANE so look on your panel to see ,

If the the refrigerator evap is cooling and not the freezer evap means the refrigerant valve needs to be replaced

Everything made by man can break. LG and Samsung are the top 2 sellers in the world so they're going to have more failures as they should being the big 2. Buy what you like because it can all break. Good shot at guessing on whats wrong with it but you most likely have a bad switching valve or even just the electronic solenoid controlling the valve which is an easy fix without tapping into the sealed system. Call a good repair tech company.

It's not easy to replace a compressor there are steps to doing it, u have to recover the refrigerant and after clean out the system and when the new compressor is installed then u have to vacuum the system. It's not easy It's process and takes a lot of time.

thanks for the sympathy It really sucked. I spent a lot of money on that fridge. Got a kitchen aid top of the line now. The guys who picked up the samsung said it is a daily occurrence. Beautiful new looking fridges picked up and trashed every day from samsung. Stand clear of them.

mine is clicking with a beep behind the rear cover, the clicking is the fan trying to turn but wont, it spins freely by hand. fridge wont cool. two months after the samsung one year warranty.

compressor motor always on high speed no freon leaks. Didnt see a 3 way valve only lines to each evap Traced them all the way just had different sized oraphases. Technician also confirmed compressor bad. This is a common issue with Samsung.

3 way valve is the round black thing to the left of compressor screwed to back. hi pressure liquid goes into valve comes out captube lines either to refrigerator or to freezer. samsung is dumb that they cool refrigerator first. then freezer. if you unplug box and plug it back in you should feel the valve rotate. not to say the compressor is not bad i've change alot of them..

at 2:50, you say that the compressor and fan should be running all the time... That's not correct. Once the refrigerator (fresh-food and freezer compartments) get down to the set temperature, the fan and compressor will turn off (except in some of the newer refrigerators with variable-speed compressors, in which case, the compressor will run at a slower speed.)

I would highly recommend not buying any Samsung products I almost had a dryer burn my house down very dissatisfied with design in the dryer ! they're building products designed to go bad within one year in order to gain financial power $$$$$ refrigerator I bought also one year old plastic parts broke LED went out doors squeak and doors Will not stay open I nothing but problems Samsung worst company ever The design on the dryer is allowing lent to go into the element which will cause a fire purposely designed to burn your house down that's Samsung so Go out and get one so you can have problems like me!
