One point that seems to be seriously overlooked with these diy systems is user serviceability. With a commercially bought solar power station it is incredibly complicated if not totally impossible to break them down and replace components that fail. With this system the entire thing is serviceable. That to me offsets any aesthetic considerations.

It was good work 👍🏻👏🏻and I think it is necessary for each home to have one like it for emergency situations... My friend...I have two notes about the work I hope you accept them: 1. When you connect the inverter to a four-cell battery, it was preferable to connect the poles of the inverter to the beginning and end of the cells and not to one side of them... I mean the positive should be from battery number one and the negative from battery number four so that the charging and discharging occurs on all the cells. 2. Ventilation holes must be made at the bottom of the box on the side of the white battery for the purpose of circulating the air into the box while the fan draws from the top on the opposite side and creates a complete ventilation cycle without suffocating the air intake process. Thanks for your comment! You do need to be careful, I agree. Meanwhile, these are the same type of batteries, LIFEPO4. And yes, you do not want to draw more power than the BMS can handle on each.. I am well under that in this build. Also each BMS will protect the cells should you accidently do something incorrect, or draw too much power.

This is a genius idea amd it just so happens that i have almost all of these exact same components laying around the nursery, including 3 taylor dunn carts. 2 broken down and one thays on its last leg. It uses a prehistoric charger, that i just know is going to burn my whole place down. So ive been considering replacing it and going lithium. I have 36 SPIM08HP cells, 30 solar panels, some high power inverters and converters and a plethora of miscellaneous electrical and mechanical parts. All from past projects that were either retired from service or never completed (Damn ADHD) and all designated for use in seperate projects. Despite having all of these components, I had never thought about using them all together. That is until i came across your videos. Now you have renewed my interests and got me itching to bring back at lea one Taylor Dunn back from the grave. So thank you for sharing your work. I hope you continue to create this type of content. We need more creator's like you that are open to showing your whole build process, step by step, all while using recycled and reperpused component's togther to make cool stuff that actually works. It is the type of stuff that is severely lacking on youtube. Sure there is a ton of channels that show similair stuff, except they are all shills, using brand new sponsored parts to build things thatbare completely out of touch and unrealistic for us common working folks with familys and limited funds.

I’m building some kind of system that uses a 3,000 watt inverter, because I need to stop and rest while driving. Pull over somewhere, hook this bad boy up, turn on the air conditioner to rest/take a nap, heat some coffee, etc. i’m thinking 3 x 100 amp hour mini Redodo to push my 3,000 watt Redodo inverter charger since my AC uses about 2,300 watts, so gives me some room to run more

Looks good, and nice use of a collection of batteries. If they were lead, not good, but LiFePO4 shares so nicely. Might need to disconnect and check them every dozen cycles or so and full charge individually if necessary. I think I'd mount the fan blowing into the box. The intake for the fan is a large hole with low air velocity and somewhat sheltered, plus easy to shelter more that one spot. Around the edge of the lid might have water dripping, and suction there will pull it into the box.

I think overall, the 12 volt just makes the most sense, most choices, better prices on battery and inverters. I’m shocked tge 1,000 runs your heat gun. I had tried a $500-$600 harbor freight pure sine wave, it failed within 15 minutes. It was a 3,000 watt continuous and only pulled 2,300 watts. Next I tried a Renogy 3,000 pure sine wave, dead out of the box. You’re using a generic one, over 30% over rated watts, no problems, excellent

Right on! Yeah its not all the time they are rated less than they can usually handle. I was surprised too! I tried the HF inverts, had the same issue, had to buy one way larger for the peak draw, they don't like start up spikes at all.

Also, the resistence load allows for higher output on the inverter than inductive load. They rate the inverter for max use with inductive, thus the 1300 watt draw with heating element in heat gun.

I would not put lithium batteries in parallel from different manufacturers. They all have to be at the same state of charge before connecting them.

Thank you for your comment! Is that due to a bad experience you had? Usually people posting this are just reciting recommendations from the manufacture. Of course the manufacture only wants you to buy only their batteries, all of them, all at the same time. They can't possibly endorse combining them with other random batteries for liability reasons alone. In practice, there is no problem paralleling batteries of the same voltage range and lithium technology. When connecting them up together they need to be within .1v so energy doesn't flow too fast from one battery into the other, it has nothing to do with state of charge. Being close to voltage will mean its probably close to the same SOC but LIFEPO4 has a pretty flat voltage curve so that's not always the case. Please see Off Grid Garage Australia where he puts even extreme differences to the test and has no issues. NOW if you are ever using them in series, they do need to be very very similar in quality and SOC, otherwise your capacity will only be that of the weakest/lowest battery.

Great build, that is until you added that cheap, high frequency, transfomerless inverter. A much better choice would have been to add a low frequency, transformer based inverter charger. Your system would last, far, longer, and you would have a much higher surge capacity to power high inductance loads.

Thanks! The best thing about a DIY build is you can put whatever inverter suits your needs in there. I don't plan on starting large motors so no need for a low frequency inverter in my case.

Why not put an 120 volt ac to 12 volt dc charger so you can plug it in to charge up? I built one of these about 12 years ago on a luggage dolly with a panel. Helped out during power failure with lighting and fan for our living room.

That is very nice build cool love it 🥰🥰🥰🥰i build my own i have just 800 watts inverter 8Amp 60Hz 110 A/C outlet have 3 outlet 110A/C i see lot video only thing i never see no body have breaker in there powers i have 2 20Amp breaker coming from my inverter going to my 2 outlet 110A/C so if any thing happened the breaker will only flip my inverter will not damage

Thanks for your great question! The way I understand it is, we use breakers to protect wires, not devices. So if you use a huge inverter, with many smaller wires off that inverter, you need to protect each wire (circuit) with a breaker rated for the wire ampacity. This is usually all done via a load center (I also run a 3000w inverter with a load center). The 1000w inverter I use on this small build has both internal fuses and built in protections. Also, all wires connected to this inverter can handle that so it's no problem to not have any 120v breakers. Lastly, You always want to fuse/breaker your batteries, that way your batteries and load can be separated if there is any problem. The inverter is just another load. Of course I am no electrician and always want to consult your local codes. Hope that helps!

Nice video. Can it fit 2 Redodo mini inside? Regarding to the 1000W inverter, to get 1000W output on the AC side, the power input draws by the inverter will be about 1250W, due to inverter efficiency, 80% is typical, so if you use just one 1280Wh (12.8V x 100Ah) battery, you can run for about an hour.

Building your own is always So much cheaper than buying an All in one system, But it will always be physically larger. I would love to take a Milwaukee packout style bottom base with the bin on wheels and build a large system, But i already have all in one systems so it doesn't really make much sense to do. Its unfortunate that LifePO4 is so Heavy.

Or just get a 1kw power station cos they're cheap as chips, a box with wheels and 2, 3 or 4 x 12v batteries. Connect batteries in series (24v 36v or 48v) and connect via a fuse and switch to the solar input of power station. Stick it all in the box with wheels.

Definitely an option.. I just haven't seen solar input being very high so external batteries could be a charger for the power station, but it could not support 1000w continuous draw.

Ive seen this done, with some smaller boxes per your needs, like sometimes you need a charging setup, sometimes you just want a battery and inverter to take power on the go temporarily... I like that you can pick you stack and go with that type setup. Clearly those boxes are quite an investment over an all in one box type setup.

Thanks for your question! Balancing is needed for cells in series (when adding voltage together). Since these batteries are all run in parallel (adding capacity together), they will stay perfectly balanced with each other. Running parallel also makes there little concern for connecting different size batteries up, as long as they are the same technology (lifepo4 in this case). Good question! If I had all the parts, I could assemble it in a few hours.. but you know, couple trips to the store and life makes it a few day project for me. Factory all in one systems are very compact and not serviceable.. with this I can change or upgrade parts as needed! Its also much cheaper.

What's the surge capacity on both the batteries and that inverter? Often the inverter can surge to 2000W, that's a 167A kick on the batteries (assuming the batteries can keep up). That will probably blow that 100A fuse... a 150, 175 or higher fuse may be needed. BTW your 1300W test at 81.7% efficiency (they're usually 90% or better) is a 132A draw from the batteries (or 120A at 90%)! Larger inverters of 2000W or 3000W are fine if you use the appropriate number of batteries to keep up with the amp draw. They can be used to run high draw items, such as a kettle, or workshop machinery, which don't necessarily operate for long periods, but wont operate from a 1000W inverter. Maybe not as portable though.

Very interesting build. Took me a bit to figure out that display belonged to the inverter. Makes it look very professional. You didn’t list the charger in the description. Would have been nice to look that one up as well. One thing you don’t have is an actual shunt or am I missing it? $800 seems cheap. Can’t replicate that with your Amazon parts list.

Thank you! Yeah the display is nice to have with the higher quality inverters. I am pretty familiar with lifepo4 voltages so I didn't feel the need to also have a shunt. I just want to know about how many W I am drawing out of the bank. This build was last year, maybe prices are continuing to go up, but I have the breakdown at the end. You should be able to still get close, and still be way cheaper than an all in one system.

Hi there! If you need to draw that much power, sure! It would last about 1.25hrs at that rate, so not long. I don't plan on running a large load, I want to power up smaller stuff for a long period of time camping or in a power outage. Larger inverters get big and heavy pretty quick, this is a portable setup. Thanks!👍

I didn’t think it was a good idea to mix different sized batteries in line? I’m guessing you had the smaller ones already, then got the Redodo mini afterwards? I’m leaning towards this portable set up too. I already have the roll around box. Thinking of 3 Redodo mini batteries. I’m hoping you linked your parts.Just curious why you set it up to power it up from one switch? I’m sure there’s a great reason, just not sure. Excellent idea on the LED lights, seems like a lot of thought went into it?

A variety of power and lights are my most common needs, so focused mostly on that! I have all the 12v accessories on one switch, they are low draw. The inverter has its own switch and will need to be wired up DIRECTLY to the battery with large cables and a fuse like I have.

Sure, I can do that if needed! I have a larger system for the house too.. This one is the portable unit. Takes a lot of solar panels to charge up this kind of capacity, so it is not too practical to carry around all that if I dont need to recharge it with the sun.

Hi Phil, its 3000wh (watt hour) system which is calculation for capacity. It has a 1000w inverter, which is how much power it can provide continuously. Even though we had it up to 1300w with no issues.

Lol yeah, that's why I joke about it in the video. These don't generate any power. Solar panels do that. I think they got that name since they provide power, and around the same size as a ICE generator.
