That is a fantastic tutorial. Compared to buying a self watering pot, which are ridiculously expensive, this is a great alternative. Thanks! TeresaSue

I have a few and yes, they can be very expensive! These DIY ones are MUCH cheaper and very effective. All the potting mix in both is now moist after just that tiny watering in. I filled the reservoir of each with about 1/3 a watering can of water today (three days after making them).

My daughter built one from a tote, she used a platform item that was perforated and some kind of supports then the cloth with the tube. She had a larger diameter tube. When we went through the heat dome, the potatoes were fine because of the "self- watering" tub. She still uses that same tub/tote today, 3 years later.

Use a simple soldering iron to put all holes in your pots. Love this idea, Tanya. Thank you.

If you have one, that's great. I'd venture a guess that few do, though!

I’ve used perforated beer cans in the water reservoir around the center wick because I had a few lying around !😂

Great idea Tanya I might use a funnel at end of mine or heat the pipe with a hot air gun and make the opening a little larger when I get mine started..

The only thing I am still asking about is the oxygen. How do the roots breathe? I’m looking for some ideas or explanation for it.
@Lovelygreens4 ай бұрын
How do roots breathe in any other pot or container? Through the soil/potting mix surface. The fill is not solid but filled with holes, cavities, and tiny tunnels made by soil life.

Great idea! Thanks🌱 About how often do u water them?
@Lovelygreens7 ай бұрын
So far, not often. The water is locked deep inside and protected from evaporation.

That's such an easy wateringsystem. I have a different question if you don't mind. I have an apple (Jonagold) tree and a pear (Conference) tree next to eachother but the pear doesn't seem to thrive. And unfortunatly i don't have another spot for this tree. Could the apple be taking all the nutriens? Thanks for the video .
@Lovelygreens8 ай бұрын
Hi there - how far apart are the trees? How old are they and what size? What root stock are they on?
@jeaninevanzantvoort40428 ай бұрын
@@Lovelygreens about 3,5 ft. both about 3 years. No taller then 5,3ft. They don't have rootstocks. ( i honestly don't know if it's necessary)

Hello Tanya Lovely Greens . That's a smart idea . Just a quickie Question . Do you need such a large container for one Tomato plant ? My Toms are in smaller pots .Have i made a mistake and so need to transplant to larger pots? Thanks for any advice.
@Lovelygreens8 ай бұрын
Tomatoes can do well in smaller pots but need more watering and feeding (fertilizer). What size pot are you using?

Can I use bamboo in place of the pipe?
@Lovelygreens6 ай бұрын
Depends on how wide the bamboo is. Also, where it's in the water, it will rot.
@lionofgod58437 ай бұрын
Nice idea but not very practical. Would cost $25-30.00 to make each pot and only houses one plant. Those pits alone are $15-20. Where I am.
