Great video. I love self watering pots. I put the microfibre cloth up the side of the pot and leave a little poking out the top of the soil. When the cloth feels dry, the water reservoir is dry, so I know when to water without needing to lift the inner pot out.
@Dwynfal2 жыл бұрын
I used the plastic caps off soda/water bottles to lift up the planted pots. Just put a layer of caps at the bottom of your cover/outer pot, 5 or more depending on size, and they lift up the inner pot by nearly 2cm which is usually just fine. Works great and they can take a lot of weight!

Thank you for the great idea. I might try this with my Adeniums. 13:59 Instead of lifting the inner pot, measure how much water you placed in the outer pot the first time, and from then on, add only half of that amount every two weeks.

I've done this (minus the cloth) with at least half of my plants in order to save money on buying more cement pots...it was getting very expensive (I like to have my plants in really nice pots). Now I learn that all I needed to do was add an ecloth and I could've had a self-watering pot. I Love it! I'll be adding an ecloth to all of them next month when the weather gets warmer. Thank you once again for a very informative video. ♥♥♥

DIY- self watering pots rock! Especially my Calatheas have become so easy to handle with Lechuza pon and a self watering system. Neverthless not all of my plants seem to like my attitude towards pon. Maybe it's just my watering but somehow I got the feeling that it contains water pretty well whilst being rather dense which can animate some plants with sensitive roots to develop root rot? I would love to see you guys make a video about pon! And talking about plants with rather sensitive roots: A video about Alocasias would be awesome, too. Keep your good work on!

You don't need to destroy a useful pot - just stack plastic lids under your plant. I get vegan protein powder all the time and use the lids for bottom watering & raising plants up. I also have created my own self watering by stacking and alternating the top & bottom of some smaller plastic 2x2 inch so I can get the water meter past the stack.

I love this IDEA! Thank you!! But I have a question: can I use stones or rocks to lift it up? I bottom water my plants, and I use pebbles on the plates to help maintain the moisture in my plants.🪴 So, I was wondering if I could use pebbles, or rocks, or stones to lift them up instead of anither plastic pot. 🤔

Not shure about micro fiber cloth but nylon tights are perfect for self watering systems. No organics so dont rot quickly and are good in absorbing water. Also 1 pair of tights = alot of strings... really alot. Also instead of cutting pot may use plastic cups or botles... or piece styrofoam or anything no organical. And dont use too big inner pot if roots are not very developed. In my expriece small root system+big pot+self watering = dead plant 🥺

Thank you. great instructions. 1. how does the soil not pass through the holes in the bottom of inner pot? 2. Still you have lift the inner pot to see how much water is there left. Can you please show us a)by the use of a simple tube with a floater and 2)or a cheap home made electronic component system ( with and LED indicator - dry vs wet soil works on LR2302 battery- long lasting!). that then takes away need to lift the inner pot to check!! Hope you can show us that construction. Best wishes. Sudhir

Hmm may be you can put leca at the bottom of the big pot and then put the plant with it’s original pot or new bigger pot on top of the leca. Since the leca has raised the height. Use the root as wicking medium. Wouldn’t it be more simpler?
@riikkas38222 жыл бұрын
Speaking from experience, the leca is so light/airy it floats so the inner pot just sinks to the bottom of the outer pot. I repaired it by putting a few of those plastic-pizzabox-lid-open-keeping-thingies in the outer pot, add leca to the level of the thingies, add inner pot et voilá.

13:43 That's not how wicking works, the water isn't going to drip down because it's never going to absorb more water than the soil can hold on to.

Why is it important to put the cloth against the wall of the pot instead of the middle?
@roxybooboo6709 Жыл бұрын
The cloth goes up the side only if you are not repotting. If you are repotting then it goes up the side to give you enough cloth to lay over the bottom layer of soil, which then brings water to the whole plant.
