I have used both regular Sharpies and also the oil-based paint Sharpies. some things to be aware of. If you have any finger oils on the cup, the paints will not adhere (absorb) After washing the cup and rinsing well, use alcohol to wipe the area you will be tangling thoroughly!. (2) Avoid depositing more finger oils on the cup by using cotton gloves when handling. (3) I DOUBLE BAKE the cups. first time bring oven and cup to 425 Degrees F and bake for 30 minutes, then turn off oven and let cups and oven cool naturally. Reset oven to 450 degrees F and let oven and cup warm up together. Let bake for 45 minutes. Turn oven off and let both cool naturally. When done this way, the cups have stood up to dishwashers at the local Senior Center for 6 months of use, so far. Using this method, sometimes the Sharpie metallic paints will undergo changes. Example: the Rose gold will change to plain gold metallic.

oil based sharpie markers are the best to use, dont forget to use some rubbing alcohol on the mug then letting it dry again before drawing, then finish everything off with a layer or two of some mod podge to create a protective coat so that you cant scratch anything off

I bought some mugs from ASDA for £4, used a regular black sharpie and baked for 25 minutes at 150 degrees Celsius, leaving them to cool completely with the oven door cracked open slowly. So far the mugs seem fine, no fade in colour after baking. When I was designing I wiped down the surface with some weak salicylate acid (actually in my face cleanser) and tried to avoid touching it afterwards. No cracks, haven't tried washing them yet but I'd leave them for a few days before first use! Hope this helps someone
@JoeTreese10 жыл бұрын
Followed the directions, including cleaning the mug before painting with alcohol, used Sharpie Oil markers, bake @ HIGH temp, etc. Mugs looked great going into the oven, but when cooled & removed - the colors had almost all changed. Red was vibrant going in, came out almost black. Navy blue came out brown, turquoise became light brown - only black emerged as it went in. I wish I knew what I did wrong, or if anyone else has had this disappointing experience and figured out how to fix it. Lots of hours seemingly down the tube....
@Andreamom0012 жыл бұрын
The video mentioned the colors would change. You did nothing wrong. That's just what happens when you heat them. You might want to test the colors on a similar surface before using on your project so you know how they will turn out and can plan accordingly.

This has been extremely helpful and I love your work. My issue today is that I am wanting to paint these AMAZING clear glass soup mugs I found at a local dollar store. I've not yet used the markers on clear glass, just the little cheaper ceramic. I do let each color dry before applying second coat, and in addition let sit to cure for 24 hours before baking. But my question is, is the baking step going to work as well for the clear glass? Any tutorials I've watched thus far from others don't use this step, just paint, let dry and hand wash. Just feel like this would be a good step to add.

I had to go looking for them, but you can get the at Michaels for a little under $20.00 for a pack of 4 colors... so they are more expensive then normal Sharpies, but thats because they are not Permanent Markers, they are Paint Markers. They come in Water color and Oil.. but so far the oil works best to stay on glass for myself. You can also buy them online at places like Amazon and craft places. But if you are still not sure what I mean check out sharpie.com and according to Amazon they are called Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Markers.... www.amazon.com/Sharpie-Oil-Based-Markers-Assorted-1770459/dp/B003VQ9M04/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=thecozoldfar-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=LCLJVKSJL7OC3JBG&creativeASIN=B003VQ9M04 I hope this helps...

If you want something that will REALLY adhere to plastic,ceramic,glass or metal try NAIL POLISH.All nail polishes sold (in Canada at least) are free of harmfull chemicals.However,you need GOOD Ventillation when painting with nail polish because it's highly flamable.Also I dont think the nail polish will be free of cracks if you wash it.Nail polish (and permanent markers) are best used on artworks (like decorative plates) that are not used for actually drinking or eating off of.

I tried it and it stays when you touch it but if you were to wash it it would most likely come off. It's just going to be a decoration I guess 😕

+BrandyJ Hancock just go over it with a waterproof glaze over the whole mug and it should work fine

+Julia Shemmeld Hi Julia, this is waterproof (gentle hand wash only). The sharpie seeps into the glaze on the cups :)
