A much easier way of doing the birds mouth cut is to use an off-cut of your top plate timber (half thickness) and just draw it onto your rafter when you've decided the overhang on each side of the shed while your timber is on the roof, cut your two notches out and trace every other one from that first piece.

How do you insulate the roof in your design? Since there is no ridge, as in a roof with a gable, there is no ridge vent. Are there no vents installed on the lower or upper sections of the roof, and if that's the case, does insulation take up the entire thickness/height of the rafters/joists? My roof doesn't have a ceiling frame, as the roof is the ceiling. To have additional natural lighting, I have casement windows in the raised area, so I can't install a ceiling frame. Thank you.

I am a bit confused about how the roof pitch is calculated. At 2:55 in the video, the diagram show a RUN and RISE. The RUN is shown BETWEEN the 2 outside wall, but the RISE is measured from the inside of one wall to the outside of the opposite wall. I would think that the RISE would have to be measured at the INSIDE of both walls, as that is where the RUN is measured. If you were to measure the RISE between the walls it would be a smaller number that how you are showing. Measuring at the birds mouth seat does not appear to be mathematically correct. What am I missing?

@LittleRayOfSnshine693 ай бұрын
Way too complicated. Put your rafter up where you want it. Put a square against the exterior side of the wall and overlapping the rafter and make a mark all the way across the rafter top to bottom. Put a square up against the inside of the wall and up against the rafter the same way. Mark it and measure the gap between the top plate and that point on the rafter. Go to the exterior side of the rafter and measure up that same distance on the vertical line you just made and make a mark. Line your square against that first line you made with the pivot point of the square touching the point you just measured and mark your 90⁰ horizontal line towards the inside of the wall. It should meet the mark you made for the inside portion. That's your birdmouth. Repeat for the other wall and make your cuts. I've been building these type buildings for years and not once have I ever taken into consideration rise over run or angles or any of this other stuff. The walls are what ever you cut them to be and the pitch is going to follow naturally. You'll have your rafter sitting flush every time if you do it this way.
