DIY Silicon Carbide Grips Like a Pro!!

Outstanding video brother, much appreciated. Will be adding the mod to my Glock 34, Gen 3. All you need to do now is seal it with Krylon, Short Cuts, clear gloss. It comes in a 3oz can and can purchased at a hobby/craft paint store, i.e. Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.. The Krylon with 'top-seal' the silicon carbide and prevent the granular pieces from coming off in your hand. Again, outstanding video. Thanks for sharing.

@@maxtheroofer8004 the context was the damage a soldering iron does to a plastic frame versus the addition of epoxy with rough media mixed in. The abrasive media will wear off over time and the epoxy on the frame remaining will strengthen rather than weaken the plastic. Epoxy can also be softened by solvents to aid in removal.

Good video. On the punch pin holes for the backstrap, there's really no need to worry about that. The backstrap is epoxied in place now so that roll pin isn't functional anymore anyway.

I could get the backstrap off of I needed to. I could score along the edges and pop it up. Wanted to keep the punch pins accessible just in case. Doubt I’ll ever take it off though

Hmm not really sure about that to be honest. I’d venture to guess it might add a little since you are adding a layer of epoxy over the grip. It does enlarge the grip slightly too. Might be interesting to try to figure out how to test that…. Good question!

I did same then painted it with car bumper and trim paint. Then said screw it and used truck bed liner spray and man together it's awesome. Even sprayed mags and it's great stuff. Dupli Color is what I used

Informative and nice video, I just don't see why people don't use talon grips instead of something like this. They're not expensive, they stay on for a few years as long as you applied them correctly you don't even have to lightly sand the polymer, and they just work. I understand not all guns have that option but lots of the bigger brands do.

I’ve used Talons and they don’t last for me. I’ve got a Glock that was prepped and cleaned with a Talon on it and it’s falling off. I prefer this as well as the grit is customizable. If Talons work for you great!

I've used Talon tape on serveral guns and i like it. However, Talon tape isn't available for every gun/grip. Also, Talon no longer makes a tape for each grip size within a model family. Instead, they ship you a tape for the full size and provide marks for trimming. This places the burden of trimming the tape to accomodate smaller size frames fully on the user, but the price of the tape hasn't changed. Follwoing the method in the video, you can detail the grip the way YOU want it. Such as using a fine grit on the backstrap and a mix of fine and medium on the front strap.

​@@vanniek71 I have some talon grip tape on my Reptilia grip for my rifle, and on the sides of a mouse I use at my computer. Both have relatively slick plastic, especially the mouse, and it holds super well. I am curious if the reason they are holding is because the tape is allowed to have full adhesion on the flat surfaces vs what you get with pistol grips which have a bunch of uneven surfaces that the grip tape has to contend with. Silicon carbide does seem to be a nice alternative to a custom stipple job though. It does apparently need to be touched up eventually, I saw competitor who mentioned that her grip needed a touch up because it was looking pretty rough after a lot of use.

@@vanniek71 It's cool, just bustin' yet chops. :) So I was wondering if you've ever tried a secondary operation of thinning the epoxy and spraying it lightly as a topcoat over the carbide grit? It would serve to further bond it to the gun, would reduce the initial "bite" a bit, and should help it last longer, while resisting wear. I've done something similar in a different application and it worked well. Just a thought for v2.0. ;)

@@vanniek71 You can spray the thinned epoxy with a cheap squirt bottle from the Dollar Store. You have to get it fairly thin to be the right viscosity for the coating anyway, and that makes it sprayable. It kills the mechanism in some cheap spray bottles (due to the solvent), but since you only need it to work for about a minute, that isn't an issue if you time it right. :) If you patent and market this process, I want royalties! lol

I have grip tape, but on the frame where my thumb goes, I need something that will stay, and I plan on doing this rather than getting a gas pedal. This is needed because I have to keep replacing the tape where my thumb goes.

The pieces stop falling off, I shot my first match with these guns this past Sunday and all the loose pieces are gone. As far as cutting you, its a preference thing. In competition shooting I want my gun to "stick" to my hands and not move, this process definitely helps with that!

You could, but then you risk creating indents in the grip. I’ve found it’s better to dust it, let it sit and “wet” out and then redust over and over until it doesn’t wet out. Then once cured (overnight/24 hours) brush the grip and some particles will fall off, but you get the best overall performance and finish

Unfortunately there isn’t a definite answer. I carry 46/70 on one of my edc’s and it’s fine, but I wouldn’t suggest that for everyone

I do hear a lot of people complain saying that their talon grips don't stay on though, but I have used a dozen different ones and over the past 6 years they're all good. It’s not really cheaper or easier actually. Talon is what $20 a grip? So are my kits! Talons you have to clean the grip to apply… same with my kits. Talons wear out (at least mine did about once a month) Silicon Carbide lasts forever. So in the long run it’s actually cheaper. Also with Talons you can’t select your grit aggressiveness, with my kits you can :) But to each their own, nothing wrong with Talons and they work great for a lot of people. Do what works for you!

The best way is to get some JB weld putty and you can build it up and then go over it with the kit especially if you want to shape it differently

It all depends on what grit you use and how much you shoot. I've heard of people shooting 50,000 rounds a year re-doing them every year or every other year and some guys that shoot 3-5k rounds a year are on their 5-6th year and cant tell the difference in the grit texture. Unfortunately there is no Hard answer. I can say the grips in the video are still going strong without any wear showing. I do brush them to remove the grip enhancer build up that I use but other than that they are GTG

The epoxy will coat metal too! Although with a 1911 you may want to take the grip panels off and just apply the carbide to those and then reinstall them. But you can do the whole grip too if that’s what you want to do (Make sure your grip safety still works)

Holds up great, and there is a little that comes off in the beginning, but after a bit it stops. Great thing about carbide is it’s used a lot for polishing rocks, and our hands are a lot softer than that so it lasts!

Which texture is the closest to the feel of the M&P 2.0? Could you mix the silicon carbide in the epoxy itself before applying to coat all the grit better so it doesn't cut you and helps keepnit from breaking off from handling?

Not sure on the M&P 2.0 haven’t played around with one. You could mix the grit and paint it all on if you want to, but it works best if the epoxy is under the grit. As far as it falling off, after the initial shed of loose particles not much comes off.

It all depends on what you want. I can’t say for certain 80 grit is ok for you……If you aren’t sure order a few grits, get a wooden dowel and apply them to small sections and see which feels best.

I'm a competition shooter, and I shoot high volume. But I've had the same grip tape on my 2011 for several season and it still grips fine. What do you think of the guy who suggested sealing the result with Krylon? It seems to me it would take some of the aggression out of the grip.

@@puddintame6310 I’m a competitive shooter as well which is why I even went down this path. So far a bunch of dry fire and a match in I haven’t felt any change. I’d guess it will last more than a few years before it’s noticeable. The krypton route…. I’m sure it would knock down the texture a bit, but I don’t think it’s really necessary right now, once the little bit of initial grit comes off, it’s stopped completely.

I dont know how much of an imprint it would leave to be honest, I’ve never measured the epoxy coat thickness but we are likely talking 1/16” or less, maaaaaybe 1/8” with the grit applied. However I have seem people use JB weld to achieve what you are describing and then using the 71 Creative kit over that.

For me, because I was replacing Talons all the time and couldn’t find an aggressive enough version. If you like Talons and they work for you that’s great. If not, this is a choose your own adventure alternative that way outlast Talons.

Once the epoxy is cured you are going to be A OK. I’d caution against huffing it though while it isn’t cured, that’s bad mmkay

Yep you can. I got tired of grip tape failing and this is a competition gun. I don’t want to reverse it, so this obviously makes sense for my use. Like everything else it’s a choice right? Choose what’s best for your application!

@@vanniek71 it’s permanent grip tape. It’s cool. As a competition gun I would like to see the wear life. If it wears out maybe you can just apply a new coat.

I did same then painted it with car bumper and trim paint. Then said screw it and used truck bed liner spray and man together it's awesome. Even sprayed mags and it's great stuff. Dupli Color is what I used
