1/2 inch sanded plywood

Have you ever done this with MDF board? I want to make this for the first time and i would like yo use a cheaper material the first go around. And fhe sanded plywood once i have gottwn fhe hang of it.

Hi, no I haven't. And mainly two reasons is weight and strength. MDF can be slightly heavier than plywood. And secondly I am not sure how the hinges would hold up. Screws in MDF do not have the same holding power as plywood in my experience. But I do like the way MDF looks painted. It is up to you, but if you do. Make sure to wear a mask when cutting MDF as it can have a chemical that is bad to breath when cutting creating a lot of dust. Hope this helps and good luck!

Do you use 1/2 in plywood or 3/4?

I try to use 1/2 inch for most of my builds. 3/4 is just so heavy. Especially for transport and setting up you have to have a lot of weight in the back to keep it balanced. So I try to use 1/2 inch or less for all my builds. Thanks for watching!

Is there any reason why to grove cut on boxes were off centered?

Hi, yes I forgot to discuss that part. I made the wood attaching to the plywood off center. One is toward the inner side and the other is toward the outside just a bit off center. So when I fold the backdrop together they lay flat instead of bumping together keeping if from closing. And over time will make it easier for the plywood to warp and bend. Since I moved the wood off center in the plywood. I had to move the center of the boxes off center so they will still fit in smoothly. So the main reason is so it closes better for storage. I will have more illustrations in the plans. It does not have to be done. Just storage is the only reason for me. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

That is up to you. I would not advise particle board as it does not have the same strength as plywood, its heavier and will not look clean when time to paint it. Hope that helps and good luck!
