Long time (very old!) guitarist, dobro, lap steeler, and pedal steel player here.. the secret to going from lap to pedal is this: on lap, the characteristic sounds are from moving the bar, bar slants etc. Pedal steel has a bigger (and therefore less mobile) bar; and to get the characteristic sounds - using/exploiting the pedals and levers and moving the bar fret to fret is the key. there's alot of sounds and chords one can play in just one position, and just two frets up. Then, combining this with right had techniques (palm and Pick blocking) Love these videos!

Im coming to see y'all live in Charlotte soon. I became a fan by watching y'all beatbox, harmonize and play slide guitar in your room doing covers. They are my favorites. Love your roots. I come from there too but not with musical talent, only a deep appreciation and love of it. Love how you share how it's done because even though you give away the secret, it can never be duplicated.✌.

As Jim Morrison of The Doors once said when he heard Robby Krieger play bottle neck slide, "We got to have that sound on every one of our songs." That thought popped in my head when I heard you play the sample for us, Megan. Doubt that I will ever play lap steel guitar. Regular guitar is a challenge enough. I still enjoy your DIY videos to better understand how you produce those wonderful sounds that Jim loved and LP fans love! 👍👍👍👍👍 Thank you, take care, and be safe, blues sister! 👍💖🎸😎

Megan, hi. Love this channel, just been a tad shy in posting a comment. Larkin Poe have a quality rarely found these days. I often feel the quality deep in my emotions. Thank you BOTH for bringing that for me to enjoy. Now, me and fellow ' myso' are going to be at your Bristol gig later in the year, to say I'm excited doest cut it in my feelings, my admiration for you and Rebecca. Any I digress, being the slightly older sister you have a little different personality, I particularly like. Apologies to Rebecca but you are my favourite. Mike though, prefers Rebecca and he's an old bugger compared to me. We are both busy with music constantly, Mike especially, busy on his third album right now. I on the other hand cannot abide the music industry. It has stolen my work and others are still getting rich from it too.Grrrr! Anyway. Keep on doing what you do so well, it makes me very happy. Django ( Geoff is my system name ) Father named me Django when I was born. He loved Mr Rheinhardt.

As a lover of every instrument with low notes (celli, bass, baritone sax, bass clarinet) I'm absolutely in love with the deep sound from that baritone lapsteel! When I have enough money I'll certainly take a look at them. But first I have to save enough for a hurdy gurdy, then I'll go to lapsteel, you make that instrument sing like a master.

Thank you for your DIY vids - wonderful for you to do this for the lap steel centric community......a question for you......do you incorporate slants in your playing?.......if so, can you give us your take on them, and if you don't readily use them, can you talk about working around them?........thank you - I consider both yourself and your sister a national treasure......

@GitarmanBob4 жыл бұрын
Megan, I love how your solos have such a melodic and vocal quality. I've listened to ALL your records and almost every solo feels like it is something I could sing along to (in my mind, I can't hit a lot of those notes but I can "hear" them). I had grown tired of so many lead guitar solos because so many people just gush out a blizzard of notes at super high speed, which can be technically brilliant but NOT MUSICAL. Your playing is what prompted me to buy a lap steel -- BRAND NEW BEGINNER -- because I was hearing music I wanted to learn how to play. Thank you. (Please come and play in Houston!)
@ralfbuschner69254 жыл бұрын
Same here - Megan triggered me buying a lap steel. This sing along thing by the way reminds my on my main instrument - blues harmonica. This often is used as a 2nd voice in the band context and therefore the harp has to play melodic riffs, catching the ear rather by expression, by tone and delivery instead by zillions of notes. (Muddy called the harp even "the mother of the band!). So my understanding of good blues lapsteel licks are basically the same, not zillions of notes (this may be impressive for a moment, but it tires the listener pretty quickly), but licks that go to ear and can be remembered. The apparent simplicity is part of the concept, but hard to master...and Megan nails it everytime!
@GitarmanBob4 жыл бұрын
Ralf Buschner, I agree, she nails it. Like your analogy with blues harp. I’ve always been more of a classic rock & blues fan than speed metal. Agree that bar after bar of 32nd notes wears out the ear.

Dear Megan, greetings from Spain. Great job with your beatiful harmonies, riffs and solos with the slide guitar in Larkin Poe. My question is if there a Slide Guitar for left handed, they must learn on it or change the strings position. I'm sorry my poor English and if the question has already been answered
@Musabre4 жыл бұрын
Loved this one! But I have a request/suggestion/question...thing, for the next one. On the equally-stellar tune Danger Angel, your slide work on that is very rock-heavy and I was wondering if we could see what sort of effects you like to use to get those really gritty distorted tones? Cheers LP! :)

Great video - you've inspired me to take my custom SX lap steel off the wall! It took me 3 months to learn your solo from "Preachin' Blues" and it STILL doesn't sound like you (and never will, of course ). I get confused with "Open G". I play in DGDGBD which I thought was traditional "Open G" but most of the KZbin videos I try to learn from are in GBDGBD like you play in and is also "Open G". Help!! (Yay Canada!!)
