DIY Smurfs Mushroom House Jar
In this video tutorial I show you how we made a medium size smurfs mushroom house using a pickles jar, tin foil, hot glue, paper clay and paint. It’s fun to make and you can use it as candy jar for a candy bar, birthday party, thank you gift for a baby shower, baby room decoration, piggy bank, jewelry box, cookie jar and so on. You can even transform it into a lamp adding some battery lights inside
So you need an empty jar with lid, aluminum foil, newspapers, paper clay (the one that mantains its size when dry - I used “DAS modelling material” a great air dry clay, but the secret is to water it a little and work it in your hand before you use it, to make it smoother), hot glue and water colors or acrylics. (A lot of you asked me after my "DIY Mushroom Fairy House Jars" video if you can use polymer clay on this kind of projects. Of course you can use polymer clay but for a bigger jar like the one I used in this video you will have to use a lot of polymer clay and the whole project will become expensive. You will be able to save some material using thin foil but still. I would recommend to use paper clay. It's a lot cheaper and easy to work with) Choose a jar and clean it with hot water and soap. Think about the shape of your smurfs mushroom house. Start shaping some paper into your mushroom’s cap. Cover it with tinfoil and integrate the lid at the bottom. You can add multiple layers of foil untill you get the desired result. Also you can create volume by making rolls of paper and cover them with tinfoil. You can use those for shaping the bottom of the cap and also to make the chimney top. Glue the tinfoil cap to the jar’s lid using hot glue. Cover the tinfoil shape with a layer of clay. Draw the door and the windows on the jar and start adding clay around them building the walls. You don’t need to pay too much attention to details at this point. Let everything dry. Apply another layer of clay to create textures and details like door handles, roof chimney, stones or any detail that might give your smurfs mushroom house a unique look. If the clay doesn’t stick to the previous layer I recomand you to water the areas you want to work on. Also keep a water container near by to wet your hands and working utensils when they get sticky. Use water to achieve smooth and shiny surfaces. Paint the smurfs mushroom house in the desired colors. If you use watercolors for this step I recommend you seal them in the end with varnish or regular hair spray.

Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What clay do you use? I use a paper clay. I either buy it or make my own depending on what I want to create 2. What's the difference between the bought paper clay ( amzn.to/2r5FEHY ) and the homemade paper clay (A) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpy8eJl4r8SAirc (B) kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXbJXohslr94pas ? The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need 3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay? Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects. 4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks? You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question 5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations? I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay 6. What brand of paper clay do you use? I use "Das modelling material" - amzn.to/2r5FEHY 7. Where can I see the list of materials? As a general rule of my channel... READ MY VIDEO DESCRIPTIONS! I write it for you guys, is no secret what I use. For every video I write a description of what I do and what I use. 8. Do you sell your creations? No, not yet, my daughter loves them too much. 9. What colors do you use? I mostly use watercolors and acrylic paint.

Will you add the colors you use if it isn't too much trouble. By that I mean the name of each color e.g. cobalt blue.

I am making an outdoor fairy house with the Smurf house on top of one of the post. I actually used Modge Podge on most of the wood I used and the baked clay I put on it. In order to keep the Modge Podge from being tacky it calls for it to be sprayed with varnish after it dries. I let it dry for 48 hours before varnishing. I used spray Varathane.

Creative Mom Hi, I haven't done anything like this before, but you have given me inspiration to try, I can't seem to get the information,so I apologize if you have answered this question, but I have air dry clay that I would like to use, and I was wondering if you wet the piece with water, or glue to get it to stick. I think that you are just awesome. M. J

It has to be the paper clay not the normal air dry clay as it cracks. She has a link to the product in the description or she also has a video where you can make your own air dry paper clay. :)
