My only thought (which has not been tested), is that the tree branches are 'drawn' on the canvas/tile in lemon juice prior to sparkling. This is the the technique I was taught as a kid in how to make "invisible ink" -- you use a toothpick or very thin brush to draw your words in either lemon juice or milk... then, when you heat the paper with a match or lighter (or in this case, sparkler), the juice/milk burns into the paper revealing the letters / art. Also, the reindeer in the original look to be made of something sturdier than just paper... probably a thicker cardstock or coated paper.

How about doing it with the paint still wet so the soot flows. Sparklers are magnesium, which is notorious for burning when wet. I'm interested by the path my head just went down. I know a little bit about thermodynamics and fluid dynamics... not much, but some. But, I'm pretty experienced with using all kinds of wet mixed media all at once... waterproof inks with water soluble paints with varying opacities at the same time to build shading zones where one color will bleed into another but not the other way around, that sort of thing. I think that powerful sparks that are perpendicular to the surface, with maybe a degree or less of separation, or even right into the paint itself, might create long scorch lines which will create a microscale dry area which can still be displaced by Brownian motion and look like branches. I dunno. I was planning on using this technique to make my dad a birthday present this year, but it looks like I'm going to need to stock up on sparklers and do some serious experimenting with different media states like wet paint, dry paint treated with water spray containing reagents like baking soda. Crushing some sparklers into powder and then laying down a tree shaped pattern in a thin layer of wet paint before lighting it might also hold a key .

I tried this and got the same results as you did. Then i just painted the trees on with straight lemon juice and heated up the area with a torch until the trees started to turn brown and it basically looked like how the orgional did. The only differnce was they spent alot more time painting the trees than I did.

I had wanted to try this as well but couldn't find good instructions. I had a thought right at the end though because I remember a few years ago I did a super secret spy activity with my kids. You write a message on paper with lemon juice, let it dry and then VERY carefully heat the paper with a flame. The lemon juice turns brown (just like the cheating cheater artwork) and you can read the message. I wondered if they painted the trees with lemon juice and then used the sparklers as the heat source to burn the lemon juice and make the trees show up...

I saw this and it reminded me of the Fractal art being made by burning wood through electric microwave motors. It's so beautiful but very danderous. They are pretty expensive to buy as well if you wanna by one already made. They do sell machines that do it but very expensive. This is a bummer cause i thought it looked real. Thanks so much for showing it was a dud before i went out and bought all the stuff..

I know how this is done. They are using homemade 'invisible ink' (usually this ink is brown or black). The trees are painted legit (by hand with a paintbrush, and likely the artist can't even see if they will turn out well, because they are doing it blind), then the heat of the sparkler (possibly in combination with the acidity of lemon juice) makes the ink/image visible. Sorry guys. There is no magical short cut to making fantastically realistic looking trees. These trees are all hand painted. The only trick is the magical 'reveal'.

A solution of baking soda and water should give you the results you want. Board should be wet when you place sparklers down. Give it a try, sorry but I don't know the ratio. It does work with electricity burn in art, maybe it will work with your sparklers?

found the instructions on Facebook. 😉 [SUPPLIES] 1 Canvas "Sized" piece of Birch Plywood....(ONLY Wood, No Canvas) 1 Can of White Spray Paint 1 Spray Bottle 1 Lemon to Juice 1 Cup Water 1 Lighter 1 Pair of Scissors 1 Can of Clear Coat Spray Paint (Optional, but highly recommended.) 1 Printer w/Blk Ink to Print Stencils...... (or) ........ 1 Sharpie to draw Stencils 2 Sheets Printer/Stencil Paper (+/-) 6 Sparklers (+/-) [Note: Don't use the Paper Wrapped Sparklers, they're not hot enough] 1 Vented Work Space 1 Hours Time to Complete [DIRECTIONS] 1. Paint Plywood w/ White Paint and let dry. 2. Print & Cut Out Stencils. 3. In Spray Bottle add 1 Cup of Water & the Juice from 1 Lemon.... .Shake Well. 4. Place Stencils on Plywood, lightly spray Lemon Water on & around the Stencils. (Caution: Dont use 2 much!) Let Stencils Dry, 15-20 mins.. 5. Once Dry, play with the placements of the Sparklers before you light them, mark those areas with a pencil dot. 6. Once happy with Sparkler Placement, use the Lighter to ignite the Sparklers & lay them down very quickly. 7. Once done burning, remove Sparklers and Stencils, gently blow off any remaining ashes. 8. If satisfied, Spray a Clear Coat to seal, let dry & hang....Violà!

I'm sure they might have drawn trees first with a gunpowder solution kind of thing which wasn't visible first but when it came in contact with sparklers, it burnt and left burnt marks (which are supposed to be the trees) Go give this idea a try.
