For the wealthy, there's the Jubilees. For the rest of us, DIY is a route to that level of sound reproduction. My vintage ElectroVoice mid horns are 38" wide and with a bit of DSP EQ (multiamped) they just melt into the room (audibly, not visually 😁). Mixed and matched with other vintage and new driver and cabinet acquisitions and an "obsolete" 7-channel AVR as an inexpensive but capable power amp, I have accumulated a system approaching Jubilee sound quality for well under $1000. Not beautiful yet, and maybe never will be, but I don't listen with my eyes, LOL! This is a fun channel and a really fun episode, thanks!

Is DYI different from DIY? Not trying to be a jerk, just not sure what you mean. Also tried to look up Schmidt speakers and couldn’t find anything, so please share a link. Thanks

@@1JGP1 they are very interesting looking. I like the diy aspect and the fact that you made use of those , ceramic drivers. I just bought a Linn axis to add to my collection. It never ends.

I checked out Schmidt's website but nothing about the custom mini Altec clones, just an omni speaker. Would love to purchase a pair like yours, albeit with an xover suitable to have a nice sealed REL fill out the bottom. I'm in the US as well so might be a moot point if they won't ship down here.

Hi, we are just working on the content for the webpage. Recently, we added our Transmission line speakers and self-powered subwoofer. It would be very difficult to ship them because of the weight alone. If you are ever in the area, drop me a line...I'd love to audition them to you. Recently, we had a gentleman travel up from Tennessee to pick up a pair of speakers! A bit of research is being done right now in regard to some custom packaging for our different product lines - stay tuned!

Great Video and thank you for turning off the "fireplace". Please talk cost, it really matters. Those open baffle speakers looked like they belong in Darth Vader's listening room. Again, great video and Happy New Year.

Do open baffle speakers have less bass compared to if it was in a box?
@Poppinwheeeeellllllieeeeez
@Poppinwheeeeellllllieeeeez Жыл бұрын
Look up "GR research open baffles" Danny has a 4 part series on open baffle design. It is an excellent series. His model uses a short and long wing on either side, a wedge base shape and cutaway for the tweeter. Bass support is achieved by a boxed in design (open) but framed woofer. Short answer is yes there is lots of bass and it is omni dispersion and feels and sounds everywhere.

They can. In this case, these provided tremendous low bass... The crossover is very important, having an amplifier with good current & drive helps,...& so too does the size of the baffle.

They are made by a company in the UK, Precision Devices. Generally speaking, they are know to make very good Pro-Audio drivers. The horn and compression driver are Altec.

Your final conclusions are very much my conclusions as well, all of these top end brands, there is a certain price point where the shoddy build quality just can't be overlooked anymore. For me, it was the Focal Grande Utopia EM, spectacular looking and sounding system, literally what dreams are made of, and I'll never be able to bring myself to purchase a pair. Not because they cost too much, I don't actually see a big problem with the pricetag, I know that is controversial to say about 250k speakers, but in the right setting, the price is justifiable if you're very wealthy. When your net worth is the 20k in savings in your account + your house, 250k is a LOT of money, it's a lot more than you have available, when your net worth is 20 million, 250k is 1.25%, aka a drop in the bucket. No the problem I have with them is that they cost that much and are made of the exact same materials as $100 bookshelf speakers, I really hate MDF. The 'reason' you don't build speakers from solid wood is primarily seasonal movement, the wood swells and contracts depending on the humidity, this is the reason given for why MDF is preferred. Some dummies like to claim it's because solid wood has poor resonances, that is factually incorrect and has been disproved by numerous people in numerous different builds and styles, as well as direct testing, videos of which are all available on KZbin, whatever sonic differences might exist are so miniscule, they are irrelevant. The reason is supposedly to avoid the seasonal movement, however, if you have any old MDF cabinets, boxes, literally anything, I'm sure you'll have noticed that it is NOT impervious to seasonal swelling, and it deteriorates much faster than plywood or solid wood over time, I have 20 year old boxes that you have to be very careful with because they're already starting to fall apart. The wood glue does not hold for very long and unless it's screwed or nailed together, it's going to start getting racking force at the corners, which weaken the entire structure and threatens total failure of the enclosure. It's a truly shitty material, whose existence only came about because sawmills needed to find a use for the copious amounts of excess sawdust they produced, it was ALWAYS a 'B' grade material, and it genuinely angers me to see top tier products being made with it, because, as I hope I explained properly, there's no good reason for it. Not only can they afford to build them out of quality hardwood, they should be crafting these products to be heirloom quality, not expensive, temporary garbage that will disintegrate in a couple decades.

I like natural woods...If it's good enough for a Piano, it's good enough for speakers; However, you are correct that wood is more subjective to humidity, etc... It's also more expensive to build out of wood! MDF is pretty easy to work with, easy to shape and mold, it's also pretty dense - a plus for acoustics if braced properly. I think long gone are most North American manufacturers making anything out of wood... :(
