I was looking for a good outdoor waterproof subwoofer and found the same issue with the expense...I've built many boxes so that was not going to work for me. Thanks for your video...the PVC formed the basis for my waterproof speaker build..I already use quite a few Planet Audio amps and speakers so that also sealed the deal for me. I used a little more recessed seating for the speaker 3/4 mdf and covered in abs plastic on both cylinder ends ... will post a video review after and cite you for credit of course!

Cool. What speaker did you end up using? What “vented enclosure volume” did your speaker call for? Interested to find out. The specifications sheet provided with nearly every subwoofer gives both vented and sealed enclosure specifications for optimal performance. Some also give exact vent measurements for length and diameter of vent tube. I was shooting for compact as possible and the coupler just happened to calculate to the exact volume for sealed enclosure for my particular subwoofer. Thanks for the comment.

I recently found a place that sells PVC by the foot and from 1/2” - 24” diameter. I would use 12” diameter and install one in each end. Also be sure to calculate the volume of the enclosure based on the specs for your particular subwoofers. So just as an example…. 10” Subwoofer “x” specification sheet calls for a sealed enclosure volume of a range of .65 - .75 cubic feet. So 2 subwoofers would require 1.3 - 1.5 cubic feet. So a 12” PVC cylinder that is 22” long would give you 1.44 cubic feet of volume. That would produce some SERIOUS BASS! Thanks for the comment.

Not sure. Why no one else caught this.. But the radius is not 8 inch. That's the diameter. The radius is half. Which would be 4in.. u then take 4² x Pi, Then multiply that by the height and that's how you get volume. I only know this from calculating port area on speaker boxes as well as using Radius times Pi to calculate subwoofer cone area... Point is, the volume of that is about a quarter of what that speaker needs....just saying.

TLDR Spec sealed enclosure = 680 in3 PVC enclosure built ~ 490 in3 If you build a box smaller that manufacture spec, the sound will not be as loud as designed, and will start to distort at a lower power. Mistake #1 - Volume of the enclosure You calculated the volume of the EXTERNAL dimensions of the enclosure. External dimensions of the ideal sealed box = 18.5" x 5.5" x 11.5" equals 1170.125 in3 Internal dimensions of the ideal sealed box using 3/4" MDF = 17" x 4" x 10" equals 680 in3 (this is the volume to match) Mistake #2 - Volume of the coupler You calculated the volume of the PVC incorrectly. You did r (radius) 8" and h (height) 5.75" equals 1156.11 in3 .. this is just completely wrong Radius of a circle is 1/2 of the diameter. So in this case you need to measure the internal diameter of the coupler. Actual r (radius) 4.3125" and height of 8.4" equals 490.78 in3 Assumptions 8in Subwoofer Planet Audio AC8D www.planetaudio.com/product/car-audio-sound-system-auto-stereo-dual-voice-coil-subwoofer-planet-audio-ac8d/ Subwoofer Manual www.carid.com/images/planet-audio/subwoofers/pdf/ac8d-users-manual.pdf 8in PVC sch40 Coupler - $17 www.homedepot.com/p/DURA-8-in-Schedule-40-PVC-Coupling-SxS-429-080/203218411 Length listed on the link above is 8.4" PVC Pipe sch40 8" = Diameter of 8.625" (this pipe should slide into any 8in coupler)

You need to chk other videos to get more clues... and pls share with us your thoughts on this. Best of luck 👍

OffdaRoots I see.. you are suggesting that I need a port. This speaker’s specifications call for a sealed enclosure of this size. For a ported enclosure it calls for a larger cabinet. You need to measure the air volume and compare it to what the speaker maker suggests. Also subtract for the air that the speaker displaces. It doesn't have to be exact, just close in size.

try passive radiator on other side.
@audiogman58655 жыл бұрын
In order to use a passive radiator you must first design the enclosure as if it was to be a ported design because passive radiators exhibit the same characteristics as a ported design. Then you have to select the right radiator and then tune it to the same frequency as if it was a port by adding or subtracting weight to the radiator diaphragm to achieve the correct resonant frequency. It’s not just a matter of sticking a passive radiator on the other end. There’s a science to it.
