DIY SWARM TRAPS - trying to catch honey bees

Here's how I made a couple of swarm traps, with the hopes of catching a few bees.
Welcome to my first year of keeping bees, where I plan to learn everything I can about raising pollinators and maybe get some honey in the process.

I built a composter out of a large plastic garbage bin back in 1989, (I was a teenager at the time.) It involved cutting small triangular holes evenly spaced around the outside to aerate the compost and a few other features. Before I had a chance to use it, a bee colony took it over. Apparently I caught a swarm by accident. I let them have the bin and I know it was occupied for at least 3 years.

I live in south Georgia and my uncle is a honey farmer. My favorite part of the process is the actual jarring of honey and honeycomb. It's so rewarding after all the work put into it. Good luck!

Cool! My son is obsessed with sea life and wants to collect critters to catch and release. I'll have to look into raising freshwater shrimp. Any online recommendations?

emmymade planetinverts.com has tons of great info. There's a bunch of species, and most have VERY specific requirements... Red cherry shrimp (neocaridina davidi) are a great beginner invert, that do great adapting to most environments/water, and you can usually find them in local mom & pop fish stores (though it's suggest getting them from folks on eBay or Facebook to avoid getting sick shrimp or shrimp with defects). Neocaridina come in all sorts of colors too! Red, yellow, orange, blue 🙂

emmymade we are raising a bunch of praying mantids for a pre-k/k school library exhibit. One egg sack yields 50 to 100 of them. Obviously, they all don't make it, but they are very easy and fascinating. You can get the kit with educational tools and the egg sac from Amazon of all places. I'll bet your son would really like that, too.

hello! long time viewer here, all the way since baby emmy was in japan hehe!! i was wondering on your thoughts on making these and justs keep it as a hive on it's own?? i live in france where we have a lot of beautiful violet carpenter bees who like to find holes to build their nest in old wood, and i was thinking of making a wood trap like this but leave it as that! good idea?? bad idea???

Your colony probably won't swarm this year but they will most likely swarm next year. One of my beehives swarmed last Sunday. They didn't go into my traps but I caught them and Now I have 3 hives!!

A swarm lives in the wall of my mother's house. It's actually become quite a problem and all attempts to catch and relocate it have failed.
