This was so interesting and informative! When a keeper finds that a queen is being rejected, as you showed here, what are possible reasons for that? For example, when you've seen it, what are the most common reasons you've encountered ? Injury? Age? Illness (of the queen)? Not able to lay eggs for some reason? Was this particular queen able to live with a different colony? I hope so. How long should a queen be kept in a "safety cage" on her own till you can introduce her to a different colony? Anyway, it was unnerving to see how upset the colony was with her, how mean they became in mobbing her to make her go away. 😢

This reminds me of an autoimmune disease, only on a bigger scale. It's like the hive is an organism made of cells (bees) and the immune system has gone wrong somehow, maybe from a virus, and has been triggered to recognise that one particular type of cell (queen bee) is now a foreign cell that needs to be killed off. It's just fascinating!

Something to note about how sensitive bees are to pheromones, notice how after he touched the queen and got her scent on his fingertip they swarmed his fingers as well. They are not stinging, because that would be kinda stupid for them when they have this technique that vibrates the queen so intensely it raises her body temperature and kills her. He probably did get stung a small bit, but the ones on his fingertip are so bound by the chemical signals im confident he didn’t get stung on the tip.

Florence Magar Queens are born queens, they’re not elected. They don’t know they don’t like her, until she’s an adult. This one is also a transplant from a different hive that it was born into. If the new hive doesn’t want her they’ll kill her.

Honeybees and bumblebees are very docile creatures, he probably interacts with these bees every day so they are familiar with him and sense no danger so they have no reason to sting or attack
