I can not emphasize enough that DAP products are NOT marine-safe. This is a marvelous tutorial, besides that detail, and I encourage all mer-fans with the swim skills to try this, with either aquarium or 100% GE silicon tubes. What plastic did you use for the big fin?
@robynn63957 жыл бұрын
yes thanks for saying!! it's very dangerous to use stuff like this, aquarium silicone has been a debate in the mermaid community even. please stay safe people!

@@jcgirl770 Going to need a source for that claim given that absolutely everybody else seems to disagree.
@jcgirl7705 жыл бұрын
@@versatyle253 its not about a source. It's about the fact that DAP makes a specific silicone called marine silicone, used on boats and such that is 100% marine safe. Dap and home depots websites specifically state that the marine silicone is "100% non-toxic when cured". I'm not saying that all of the are marine safe if that is the mistake. They make specific marine silicone. My dad is a contractor and buys it all the time to put in small ponds and such for his employers

The thing about these tails is that it is very difficult to get any paint to stick and that they break down easily. I have made many fabric tails and have been trying to upgrade to using silicone. I tried this method first because I am on a budget. Every single time I go swimmung part of the caulking silicone comes off and I have to make a repair. I am cautious and take good care of my tails so I know it's the material. These tails are wonderful and so much fun to create but they are only the beginning of someone's silicone tail making journey.

Hi thanks for the video, I was just wondering if this silicone is able to be spread onto a cement mold for the creation of this tail instead of piping it on? xx
@musiciangal024536 жыл бұрын
How much did the bottles of caulking silicone cost total? This is honestly the best tutorial for a silicone tail. Looks like the easiest and cheapest way for a silicone mermaid tail compared to other tutorials where you have to make your own mold, and spend hundreds of dollars on dragon skin silicone.

i have a question, do you remove the polyester fabric after you do the scales or do you still keep it on the inside of the tail? and would i need to get material that i can swim in?
@IAmVampire016 жыл бұрын
kasumikat Hay :) I made a Mermaid Bra using the same methode as she doing the tail. I had a bathing suit material and I left it in because despite all my efforts, some parts (where I swiped up for the scales) where quite thin and the fabric gives a little extra support so nothing ripps. Also, silicone on skin feels a bit like plastic wrap so the fabric feels a lot more comfi. What might happen is, that because of the water and movement, the silicone and fabric start to seperate. I just made a few hand stitches on the end to prevent that. I highly reccoment fishing line for that because normal tread looses it's strenght when constantly in contact with water. I hope this will help you :)

My big thing is I need to know what silicone to use! I hear all this “aquarium silicone stuff” what can I use to fill the mold??? What brand did you use? Is it completely waterproof? Could I mix it with paint?? I’m so so confused

you should use aquarium caulk, I'm not sure about this caulk.. there are plenty of tutorials on mernetwork but I'm seriously worried about the toxicity of this tail. you can paint the silicone using caulk mixed with pigment and paint thinner. sure, the process would be a bit more difficult and expensive but also a lot more safe and the closest to skin safe silicone you can get. please be careful if you try this!
@robynn63957 жыл бұрын
you also might want to use neoprene to create a stronger barrier between you and the caulk, also to reinforce it

So for the past 2 days i have been working on the tail and I got the fluke done and it was looking really cool! But when i went to do scales up the tail, the fabric slipped out of the duck tape and came undone. So now i have a half done tail that just broke in half and I don't know what to do to fix it. I also used a ton of duck tape but it just won't stick.
@ggaetzz7 жыл бұрын
Sarah Cook yikes! You possible didn't use enough duck tape. I wish I didn't loose so much footage but I really latered it up. You can try waiting until the whole thing drys and then use contact cement or a strong glue to get the fabric back on. I really didn't have that problem so I don't knows I would just try to glue it back on.
