Thank you for taking time and showing the details of the installation of the exact unit I am looking to install in order to replace a dying gas water heater. Almost forgot! In order to secure the down drain pipe, there is a better alternative. Just search for “bell hangers” and you will see much better options. You will not have to mess with threaded pipe, etc. Who knew? Hope this helps someone.

Just wanted to thank you for this video. I have a small cabin I'm building and I just started the plans for running the water lines. I have all of the filters and on-demand heater purchased and it's pretty much the same setup as yours. The only difference I added was a UV light due to well water. In my head and on paper I planned out pretty much exactly what you did. I'm glad I found your video and thorough explanation validating what I had planned. One thing I did not plan was the disconnects near the unit. I will need to add those.

I had a friend of mine, who is a master electrician and a general contractor, come down a few weeks back to help with hanging some of my siding (fancy concrete type) and once it got dark we discussed the water he didn't recommend I put them in either. In my case, he said since I'm only about 30' from the main panel it would be overkill. Now knowing your comment about the heating this gives me two reasons for not doing so. Thanks again for the video and even more so reading comments and replying. This DIY'er appreciates you. @@HandymanLand

@@HandymanLand Is there a minimum height for the two disconnects?
@HandymanLand
@HandymanLand Жыл бұрын
The NEC does not mandate a minimum mounting height for disconnects or meter enclosures. But switches and circuit breaker used as switches shall be installed so the center of the grip of the operating handle of the switch or circuit breaker when in its highest position is not more than 6ft 7inch. Hope I have answered your question.

Hello Mr. Handyman! Thank you for making the video, I learned a lot from this to do it for myself. The number that changed with your control knob is the gallon per minute, it has the abbreviation " gpm " next to it. This is the first I see the inside of the unit; it has 2 heating elements and each has its own circuit. So I just wonder if you just turn off 1 breaker, will the whole system still work? Again thank you very much! Thai

Hello, That is a very good question. I have mine's labeled as breaker 1 and breaker 2. If I turn off breaker 1, the whole system shuts down. If I turn off only breaker 2. You can still use the system. It will be running off only one heading element. Hope I answered your question. I will have more videos on this tankless water heater in the near future. Great video! Thank you so much! Plumbing for my application will be much trickier, so I’ll probably gonna get a plumber, however electrical work looks very doable. One question - how did you size the water filter - I would imagine it has to be at least the same GPM as the system, correct? Or bigger is better? I believe Eltron 24 is rated at 5 gpm max, so that filter is enough? Thank you!

Hi, All depends on your electric water heater. What AWG and breaker it's, connected to. The unit I installed needs a two 50 amp breaker. On a 6-2 or 8-2 wire. In my video, I installed a 60amp non fuse disconnect box. Don't do it. Install a fused 60 app disconnect box. But the disconnect box is optionable. I will be doing a video shortly on y i'm against non disconnect box soon. I'm hearing too many stories of these style disconnect box failing. It's safer to have a fuse in your disconnect box. And also, if you're doing an upgrade whether it's gas or electric, you should always just replace these shut off for new ones. You don't need to if they work but it's better just to replace them while you're already in the process of installing something new. Thank you for watching.

@BereanFellowship 5 ай бұрын
Also.. It looks like that breaker box is 'bonded' - meaning the copper wire and the neutral wire is go into the same bus bar.... It should be mentioned that if the outside meter box has a breaker in it then that outside panel box has to be bonded and the breaker box inside cannot be, and therefore, the ground and the neutral wires need to be on separate bus bars
@HandymanLand
@HandymanLand 5 ай бұрын
That is a great tip! This is why I mention that the inside panel box needs to be redone. Over the years, different people have connected anywhere they found a spot open. It's on my to do list. Thanks for watching and thanks for the tip.

Good stuff, about to install mine (ecosmart 27) and was curious about filter. That "whole house filter" is cheap! Going to get it. You didn't think 4gpm was too low? Lol good job reusing old dresser, wood prices are crazy.
@HandymanLand
@HandymanLand Жыл бұрын
Hi, The ECO is a 27-kilowatt tankless electric water heater. it can provide between 2.7 and 6.5 gallons-per-minute depending on the inlet water temperature. I belive 4GPM is good enough. While sediment filter won't reduce heavy metals or mitigate scale, they will ensure the passageway to your takless water heater remains open. Installing a whole-house spin-down sediment filter or a 5-micron per-filter before your tankless water heater will keep it clean from debris and preserve the unit's efficiency. The whole house filter I install is definitely doing it's job. This why I preferred the clear canisters. you can visually see what the filter is catching... Glad you enjoyed my video. Did you ever get an answer about needing a pressure relief valve? I have a similar question about using a pressure reducing valve, back flow preventer, and/or an expansion tank on the cold side.

Yes, we do not need the pressure relief valve. As for the expansion tank. That's a good question. It's not needed in my area. My pressure is regulated by the city. Stiebel Eltron customer service is good at answering any questions. I would assume it all depends on your area. I have a video just on their customer service. I'm fixing to install a new stibel eltron. Tankless water heater. Replacing my old one. Which never had service valves. So I do have a question. How did you install the copper pipe. That goes to the relief valve?
@HandymanLand
@HandymanLand Жыл бұрын
If i'm understanding the question. I connected the 3/4" copper pipe. To a male 3/4" adapter. It's just push in place. The split ring is on very tight. Since the copper line is open at the other end. If pressure ever builds up, it will shoot straight out the open end. You can solder if you choose so. Or you can use 3/4" Push-fit PEX fitting. I've placed both of these in the description. Hope I answered your question. Thanks for watching.

@HandymanLand
@HandymanLand 5 ай бұрын
My apologies for the late response. Yes, its overkill if electric box is within 15-20 feet. It's only good for certain application or should I say convenience... There are some homes where the electric box is in the garage. And nowadays most garages are not used for cars. More like a storage unit. Some people make it almost impossible to get to the electric box without spending 30min or more of moving their stuff out the way. I have a couple buddies that walked away from a job and told the homeowner or the landlord they need to create a path. Because they do not want to be responsible if something breaks. Don't you need 18" of copper in and out of the heater before you go to pex? I know with tanked units that is the case, is it different with tankless? Not critiquing, just asking.
@HandymanLand
@HandymanLand Жыл бұрын
Hi, That is a great question! For a gas water heater, 18 inches of copper is required. As for tankless... PEX Tubing may be connected directly to residential electric tank or tankless. (instantaneous) water heaters, if the local code and manufacturers instructions allow. When connecting PEX tube to gas tank or tankless water heater, the tube must be kept at least 6 inches away from the exhaust vent of the heater. Hope I answered your question.. Since it has a cold inlet, and a hot outlet, where do you run the cold outlet from. And if you say, just run a tea on a hot outlet, how does the machine know to output, cold water versus hot water?
@HandymanLand
@HandymanLand 5 ай бұрын
The cold is a continuous run to your fixtures. There is a fitting in the cold line that runs to the tankless. That cold water goes in the unit comes out hot. Once the cold water goes in the unit, it cannot backtrack This way it will never interfere with the cold water. In this video, I drew a little drawing that kind of explains that. @HandymanLand Жыл бұрын
@TAMMI CAMPBELL ARTISTRY Hi, Yes, so my house is all electric. Electric dryer, washer, and oven. I've yet to experience any issues. From my experience, you would need to make sure your breakers are pretty much equal on both sides of the panel. For instance, on my video. I put one 50A breaker on one side and the other 50A breaker on the opposite. That also goes for all the other breakers as well. If you have a 40 amp on one side. Then you'll have two 20 amps breakers on the opposite. The manufacturer, it states that it is a must to have a 150 amp service. For this unit. But a 100 app service will definitely get overloaded.
