This is so cool! I was scared of the soldering. I love that the entire phone stays intact for this. I just ordered two old phones on eBay, hopefully they’re similar on the inside.

I don’t thinking you can record on the phone but if you want the record on the phone you can just record on the pc and than send it to your phone with mail or message

And you can save the recordings made through the phone? Does that require any other kind of software or tech?
@SuperKnovaMusic
@SuperKnovaMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need an audio interface to translate the signal to digital and into your computer and you need recording software to record the signal. I used Logic Pro X, but you could also use Audacity or some other free program

I know this comment is a little old but you can swap the modules. Sometimes they have screws in them but sometimes you will have to resolder the cables

I love this tutorial! I did everything you said and it works, but I’m not getting the “lofi” sound that I want. It sounds pretty clean. Any tips on how to make this sound? i attached my phone to an Xlr with a stereo jack so I can use it to record on my iphone.
@zombie-process7025
@zombie-process7025 Жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, your phone is probably too new/too good to get that lo-fi sound. You might have to go for an older/scruffier telephone. Good sound off of this means you have a well-built telephone. ^_^

Will this usually work on any older telephone model? I just purchased one that looks really cool, but it's not exactly the same style. Hoping I didn't buy a cool old phone for nothing but show :/

could you use a 1/4" so that you could run the mic through stomp boxes?
@SuperKnovaMusic
@SuperKnovaMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you totally could! It might sound kind of wonky and you'll prob have to adjust the gain a bunch, but technically speaking there's no issue with using a 1/4"

Is there any way to attach the 3.5mm jack to it so it can be plugged directly in a pc?
@zombie-process7025
@zombie-process7025 Жыл бұрын
You could but you'd want to plug it into a line-in port if you have one. Be sure that one lead goes to sheath, and the other goes to tip. If it's a stereo plug, I'd guess connect tip/ring together to one wire, and sheath to the other. If it's a mono plug, you're going to get only the left channel. You might also add a tiny resistor for tip and ring so they don't backfeed on one another. But that's getting fancy.

Hi ! Very nice video!! Why did you not use the speaker part of the phone headset part??
@SuperKnovaMusic
@SuperKnovaMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, it's counterintuitive. That part of the headset that you normally speak into actually requires electrical power to generate a signal. Those old phone lines you plug into the wall actually carried an electrical current (DC I believe?), so unless you plug the phone into the wall or a power source, you can't generate a high gain signal from it. However, the other end (the part that you normally put your ear to), can conduct sound WITHOUT power. Hence it's just easier to use.

Can you tell me what audio interface and wire you use, thanks!
@TheRMUPs
@TheRMUPs 4 ай бұрын
The wire is any XLR cable, you can get them cheap at any music store/online. As for the interface it really depends on what you want to do with it, how many inputs you need and whether you want to plug in instruments so there's no single answer
@SuperKnovaMusic
@SuperKnovaMusic 4 ай бұрын
I used just the cheapest generic XLR cable from American Musical Supply. You can use literally any brand. For audio interface, I'm using the UAD Apollo Solo, but you can use any audio interface e.g. Focusrite Scarlett, M-Audio, etc.

The lengths people will go to if showing soldering is the goal. Soldering isn’t hard. Soldering irons aren’t expensive or hard to get. Arguably, stripping some wires is more difficult than soldering.

@zombie-process7025
@zombie-process7025 Жыл бұрын
Incorrect. The mic at the bottom of the receiver is a carbon mic, and would need to be powered. They're using the earpiece (speaker) AS a microphone so this is 100% a dynamic microphone.
@zombie-process7025
@zombie-process7025 Жыл бұрын
(The speaker uses a magnet and a coil to generate the sound. You're reversing that procedure, using the speaker cone as a diaphragm to actuate the magnetic field of the coil. This is, in essence, an ad-hoc dynamic mic.)
