It is guys like you that will push your country forward and I salute you. A word of advise, both WELDING and heating “spring” steel will weaken the metal, that’s what caused your “snap”.

You should re-heat that entire part, then temper it properly. After bending it and working it, you likely caused the metal to have internal stresses and flaws, possibly small cracks. Something to remember for future? This is, however a very good idea.

Something I learned to do starting when I would brake springs on my Caterpillar tractor walking beam, is like your blue part / spring steel when finished cutting and bending on it is to heat the entire part good and hot and stick it in isolation over night . This annealing process takes the tension out of the work and it won't break again nearly as easy or often. Good Video Thank you

nice DIY for shoe jack / toe jack. although this could be improvised with continues welding and higher grade of steel but overall is solid work. use guard for grinder for your own safety, and use face shield for welding, you could get skin cancer and broken cornea for doing that very long. i could send you one if you need it.

@@andycapp8843 I need no assistance. I' was looking for at least some anecdotal evidence that you yourself are not a "keyboard" warrior". It's not as if the sun rises or sets on what you might say. Let it it be sufficient to say that design, analysis and fabrication of welded structures is not something I need lots of help with, and if I do need help I know many people who are amply qualified. Let the greater point be this: the guy in the video - probably driven by lack of resources - devised a dangerous device and built it in a substandard way. It's irksome and a bit frightening to see so many people who (apparently) can't see the danger in his methods and result. That's all.

@@paullogieri248 As I said originally, an interesting video with many lessons to be learned. The post neither criticised nor supported this guy's work but was directed at the mindless repetitive comments from the warriors. If you do at some time require qualified help from professionals, the company I sold 13 years ago will no doubt oblige. They played around with a few structural fabrications for around 40 years, hotels, offices, that sort of stuff. You asked for my knowledge source when it wasn't really necessary in reality, having read the post again.

@@richardclare700 My reason for asking was to ascertain Andy's own status of "keyboard warrior" (or not) from your pronoun choices in the latest post I gather that "Andy Capp" is a pseudonym you've used. I'm satisfied that you two are well qualified in this area - but I am in need of no assistance.

Great idea. Good try. This is what happened... You heated the metal with the torch and bent it with a hammer... In essence you ''forged'' it and made it hard and brittle. You should have '' normalized'' the metal by heating it red hot and cooling it very, very slowly. This would bring it back to the strength before it was made brittle. Good luck next time.

Should have stabilized(drawing) the bend in an oven after bending it & used gussets to stop bending or breaking. 4.8 tons divided by 4 =1.2 tons or 2400 pounds per corner. you should never weld on a hydraulic cylinder ( the top part), because it could leak at the seal/ wiper. A continues weld is stronger then what ever he was going . Did this guy learn what he knows from watching youtube, ever heard of a book or work experience.

You're not just dealing with the weight of one corner the container, but also with the huge torsional forces of the steel working against being bent, you're effectively attempting to lift 3 corners at once

@@jonnya6107 True. Not just 1.2 tons per corner. If you were lifting equally at all 4 corners at once, then each would be lifting 1.2 tons. The way he's doing it, it's closer to 4 tons at that one corner.

Agree. By heating it then bending it, he went from elastic to plastic deformation, which then led to fracture. The tensile strength of the steel was likely reduced to less than one half.

no steel tips? These people live like we did in the 1980's................But seriously when labor is cheap, this kind of injunuity is valuable and helps others. Great video, thanks.

My heart was in my mouth when that metal lifter you made broke, that could have been a trip to hospital. Talk about on the edge of your seat video.

Almost the right idea. Needs the base plate to be twice as big atleast and go well under the container. The load is almost on the edge of the base.

Nice design and layout work. 'Good watching' for us who actually do this type fab work, albeit with our own US/OSHA $afety gear. Skill with cutting torch and smooth 'blind stitch' weld beads surpass my ability. I guessed this is from South Korea, didn't think of it as a Communist country. (cheap shot, IMO) Knock the paint job, guys, but it works! What've you got that's so much better? btw, subscribed .. because I'm only 70, and I can still learn.

Wow, I loved your take on this worker's efforts, John. I'm 68 and have a lot to learn about so much. KZbin's is enlightening and entertaining. Better than almost anything on TV, in my opinion. (John Harris in Texas.)
