*very* clever and incredibly creative. I love DIY projects, even if I don't ever have the intention of building something myself. Just like so many other survival and "prepper" presentations, what I truly like is the "MacGuyver" aspect of it all... taking something and turning it into something else that it ain't.

I was looking at that line flare on the front of your hobo rod and it occured to me some flashlights have a flare like that on the front. Went to the thrift store and checked through their flashlights. Found the one with the best curve on the flare. Picked up the perfect "rod" for a buck. Gutted the insides and have a nice kit compartment. It has to be tested out for cast but looks great. 🤗 Thanks for the idea.😀

@spudboy28655 жыл бұрын
the snake knot he tied is actually a bowline knot. once you start repeating it, then it becomes a snake knot
@LShapedAmbush5 жыл бұрын
@@spudboy2865 I don't agree. With a bowline, you bring the tag end up through the bight, around the standing end and down through the bight again . Remember the old mnemonic: "The rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree and back into the hole." In the video, he puts the tag end down through the bight from the top, around the standing end and back up out of the bight. So , the rabbit is going down in the hole instead of coming out. Tie it both ways with two pieces of cord and you will have two different knots. Very similar to a bowline and it doesn't seem slip either.
@spudboy28655 жыл бұрын
@@LShapedAmbush After replaying it you are correct. I didn't notice he had gone through the hole from the same direction both times when I first watched the video.

Used what I learned from your video to cheat lol. Had a very old "survival" knife with the hollowed handle and cheap compass that I unscrewed the blade. Was already wrapped in cord and had a lanyard hole. Plugged the hole with a screw then put hooks, line, weights, and floats in the handle. Went from useless cheap knife to great hobo fishing kit. The plus is the compass does work, so have a backup compass.

Excellent No nonsense. Descriptions OUTSTANDING. Knot tying video OUTSTANDING. One of the best knot instructors ever. Easy to follow for everybody. Crystal clear instructions and video. You could also use 1 inch PVC pipe with a glued on internal fitting cap for the throw end. Might have to sand the hexagon down to round. And a screw on cap for the handle end. For the grip rubber heat shrink tubing would also work great. Place it on the tube and very lightly heat it. The shrink tubing would really pull down tight. I like that stuff. Heat shrinked a couple of pliers handles that had peeled off works as good as the original. For holding the line on a heavy duty rubber band would work well. It is what we used to use to keep the line on the spool after opening the package.

I really like the idea. As always your videos are very helpful. One thing though. While you show how to make the reel, you do not show how to use it properly. Yes we can see you using it somewhat, but for myself I have not used this kind of reel, and would not know how to properly cast with it and actually safely use it. I think that this would make a good short video in the future. I know it would help me. Thanks for all you do! S!

Another great video, Shawn. Something you touched on in the video could be the genesis of a video series for you: carving skills. Specifically, different kinds of cuts, when you'd use them, recommended tools, etc. Mora knives are good quality but inexpensive enough for almost anyone to afford so would be good choices for the carving tools.
@johngiesemann52934 жыл бұрын
What if you left the rubber sleeve a little longer than the tube so you could pull it back up to secure the line? This would help prevent loosing the small rubber sleeve that secures the line. Also, what do you suggest storing inside the tube?

I'm glad you considered the fact that people don't have the money, skill or tools to do some projects. I like this project more than the carved fishing kit because I don't have the tools or skill for that. I can actually do this. One thing I do need to study and practice is knot making. By the way, what was the plant you showed that looked sort of like a dandelion. I think I have that growing in my yard and have never found out what it is. Mine isn't dandelion because it has multiple flowers/seed heads and is branched while a dandelion only has one flower/seed head.

It's usually just called a giant dandelion, but it's "official" name is Taraxacum.
