The housing seems to be either copied from a Xiaomi power bank or Xiaomi's supplier ran an extra production shift. The original Xiaomi power bank is 10.4Ah and can actually output 2A, but in the DIY version, they just put the cheapest circuit that fits into the case.

U2 is the footprint of DW01 Li-Ion 1S protection IC and below it Q1 is the footprint of the 8205A dual MOSFET. If they were populated, you could use the actual B- connection.
@izharmeidiansyah12203 жыл бұрын
I recently bought one of this and i got the black pcb board instead of green. The chip is HOTCHIP PB0059E (8 pin chip), it also has DW01 Battery Protection IC, and there's 1R0 Inductor. When i test it, the output current is actually 2A. The input current is the same, 2A. They sent you the green pcb with HT4936S Chip instead of black pcb with PB0059E Chip. The HT4936S is rated for 1A Output and Input Current, While PB0059E is Rated for 2A Output and Input Current. Anyway, Good video.

I don't solder the batteries, I use a battery spot welder. But if you don't have one then you have to risk soldering them. I have built many power banks and found some that have really good boards, but some are crap, they can only put out a half an amp at 5 volts. If you go to an amp the voltage tanks and goes under 4.8 volts. All the ones I have can handle just over 2 amps and still maintain 5 volts. That is the mark of a good power bank.
@TheSpotify957 жыл бұрын
Spot welders are very expensive; I certainly haven't got one and wouldn't get one due to the cost. Although soldering is not recommended, with a decent iron and careful soldering, it should be OK. Personally I would get an 18650 battery holder with the spring contacts and just put up with the resistance of the holder. Though for other battery sizes (i.e. 26650) I would have to solder.

Always use the thickest wire possible and connect to the largest connection pad...that will help with the current load to get 2.1A output. You could use paper clips for the coil springs...just bend them to shape and solder together.
@Random_44002 жыл бұрын
calm down it's only "2.1a" output lol that means the theoretical max current it will be pulling from the batteries is 3a divided that by 4 that's 0.75a per battery drain the wire he used is definitely adequate even if there was just one cell and pulling 3a at 4.2v which is a lithium ion's maximum safe voltage that is only 12.6w

It's a 1980's soldering gun. The power is 100VA. It has a built in transformer with 220V primary and about 2 or 3 turns of very heavy copper rail as a secondary. Simmilar soldering guns are produced to this day. Just look for a "soldering gun" instead of a "soldering iron".

You are right ... but a big portion of the voltage droop may be because of the resistance of the USB contacts. The voltage does change a lot when you slightly move the USB plug.

I guess it might also be due to only a single cell hooked up with a much too skinny wire.You absolutely should use nickel strips or at least a much beefier wire. ans most of these cheapies are missing input capacitors which also limit the output current capability quite a lot.

I can't believe that no one pointed out that this lipo battery charger isn't actually a 4 cell BMS. I know this for a fact, because I own these boards. Furthermore, you'd be a total idiot to actually link 4 lipo cells in parallel with this, and it would be dangerous potentially. At the very least, they offer absolutely no balancing for charging the cells. So don't be dumb and buy this frivolous "DIY" junk that might burn your home down.

What is absolut balancing? Shouldent all cells have to be connectet separatly to the Board? Or do you need balancing only when cells are in series?
@DiodeGoneWild7 жыл бұрын
You don't have to connect the parallel cells to the board separately. You only need balancing for cells in series. The only thing you need to do with parallel cells is to make sure they are at the same voltage once before you solder them in parallel.
@pierreuntel19707 жыл бұрын
Well... you should make sure that all the cell are in the same voltage with each other, if it's not then the higher voltage cell will try to charge the lower voltage cell at a very high current when you put it in parallel and that might damage the cell if the differential are too high

The chip is meant to handle 1A charge/discharge, that's all i understood from a chinese site. I got one of these that fit 2x18650s and spring contacts. Seems to work fine and terminates charge at 4.17v (a bit premature, but ok) and it cuts out when the battery hits 3 volts and I understand that it's supposed to do that, but shouldn't it step down the current once it gets to that voltage and then turn off? It just turns off when reaching 3v and pushing out 1A so there's still a bit of capacity left in that cell. What do I expect at a few bucks tho, right?
@goohio39546 жыл бұрын
I have a question, I have a few power banks with 18650 cells. Why when I charge them up 2 days later (without using them) they are not fully charged? Does the circuit use energy even though they are not connected to a load?
@zx8401ztv7 жыл бұрын
That looks like a neat unit, but it did need the fuses and balanced charge/capacity batterys to be slightly safer. I would charge a battery on a good charger to full, then fit the battery in that case. Next tap a volt meter to the battery direct and monitor the voltage while power is fed to the pcb for charging, if its higher than 4v and wont cease charging at that voltage, then the bin gets the pcb lol :-D. Yes im a bit oversafe with exploding batterys :)

i brought a solder less type, i would recommend to solder all batteries to the pcb. solder less diy powerbank gives issues like some batteries may loose contact that's why i have a very terrible charging and discharging rates. ive salvage a few laptop batteries, balance them before soldering then viola! these 18650's are still reliable during trip. 4x in parallel still gives around 4 to 5 phone charging cycles. depends if you just left them charging or while using

A part of this voltage droop is from USB contacts resistance. Just by moving the plug a bit, the voltage would change a lot.

That's a little worrying. Was it the test device or battery pack at fault? I haven't seen much on this but how does that affect charging a device? Say a phone for example. @himanologanor40936 жыл бұрын
they`re called USB testers, they are chinese, but you will find them in every country now on web if you don`t want to order directly from china. You just need to find a dealer of chinese stuff in your country on the internet. If you don`t, try contact the local chinese store in your town (most towns in the world have one now...) . USB testers goes from $2 up, cheper ones measuring from 3 to 7 Volts and showing amps by rotating times, while more expensive ones $10 will show everything on one screen and measuring from 3 to 30 volts plus consumed amps so that you can test lithium accumulators capacity. That load you see there is $2 , it has only 2 power resistors, one consuming 1 Amp and both consuming 2 Amps (at exactly 5 Volts) to test power banks or phone chargers. If money is no problem always buy 2 of everything, so that by comparing you will see how BAD and NO precision chinese stuff is :)

@majdinj7 жыл бұрын
1) The charging voltage and current are handled by chip. 2) If it has the same max and nominal voltage, then why not. Just custom the resistor value to give you around 1/2C charging current of the battery.
@himanologanor40936 жыл бұрын
don`t try charging lithium accus at more than 4.2 Volts, they will catch fire, i promise you. Most voltage on them i saw was 4.3 Volts but you will considerably shorten their life (about 500 charges) . That chinese box called power bank has a chip regulator that uses 5 Volts to charge, but lowers it to the 4.2 Volts on them accus. The 3.7 Volts indication you see on them is mostly a storage voltage, but they work from 4.2 to 3 volts. Don`t discharge under 2.5 Volts or you will ruin them accus. The charging current on any lithium accumulator should be no more than half the nominal capacity, you can use less with NO problems. The one you mention there is for E-cigarett vapors, but charges the same, only it can deliver more Amps needed for vapors. If you use more than half the Amp capacity of your cell for charge, it will shorten the life cycles, like for example the phones with fast charge, that need a new battery every year. We all hope they will improve in the future.

And one comment to the mechanical construction of the power bank from my side: the front cover is annoying, because once installed, its hard to open the box again. What I would like to do from time to time just to check the condition of each Li-Ion cell.

that bank was designed to work with special accus that come with flat terminals already welded (or you can weld this -Battery Terminal Strip Nickel Strip for Battery Welding yourself). Soldering on accus is not recommended since it might heat damage the inside plastic bags of lithium...welding is very fast so the cell won`t get heated, but the price is a lill higher/cell.

The problem with these kind of diy power banks is that they don't charge those 18650 batteries to its full capacity, ie 4.2v It stops charging at ~4v and says it is full. So much inefficient. Please check it.
