DIY Van Build Cabinet Doors Hinges and Pulls for Promaster Sprinter Transit Van conversion design h

The cabinet doors in every build or conversion are one of the most important parts of the design. The cabinet and cubby doors are one of the most important parts of van build design. If you’re planning to convert a van into your own DIY mobile tiny home, one of the key things to consider in the design is the cabinet doors that will provide access to your storage space. In a van build for nomad living not only do the cabinet doors add aesthetic appeal to your van, but they also serve a functional purpose. When building cabinet doors for your van there are several matters to consider - the materials you’ll be using, the look you want your van to have and the finishing. Van cabinet doors take a lot of abuse so it’s critical to build them strong. But there is a difference between strong and expensive. They are not always the same thing. As a DIY van build converter you have the ability to save some money on the doors and hardware so you’ll have it to spend on things can’t do yourself.

The hinges were purchased at a Big Box builder supply store called Home Depot - I did a quick search on line and found these www.desertcart.com.om/products/530528564-10-pack-90-degree-soft-close-surface-mount-spring-hinges-easy-installation-no-pre-drilled-noiseless-frameless-hidden-concealed-kitchen-cabinet-hinge-for-cupboard-folded-replacement-hardware - I'm sure you could find some either in Australia or have some shipped in. They're a great hinge. Also - if you are designing your cabinets I would suggest building the cases (boxes) out of 5/8" plywood then applying a skin to finish them> The plywood will be strong and will stand up to the wear and tear of driving. We've got about 30,000 km on ours and they look like new. This is what I’ve been looking for. I only have a circular saw and straight edge and was trying to figure out how to build my door without renting a router and table saw and now I feel like I can do without. Thank you!

Hi Ashton. You are welcome and I’m glad you found it useful. I too didn’t have a ton of tools. I love these hinges and want to use them in my build but how do you make sure that the door stays shut when everything is moving around inside when driving?

Hi Lucy - thanks for watching and asking .... In the video I mention that I built a 1" lip into the bottom of the cabinet. What it really is - the outside (front) piece of the plywood box is 1 inch higher than the inside bottom of the cabinet. This lip prevents anything from sliding out as you drive. The stuff never gets as far as the door. We've never had anything fall out. Good luck and I hope you'll stop back ..... Dave

Do you think half inch would be strong enough to handle the force needed to open the hinge without tearing out?

No - I think 1/2" would be too light. I do appreciate you watching and asking .... the torque these hinges have is surprising ..... if you're door stock is only 1/2" the screw you use will be shorter ....and they just can't hold. Good luck .. dave

They are called lay-on hinges or Frog Hinges, at least in Ireland and UK. Very helpful vid!
