You need vinyl caps on top of you 4x4s. Rain will get in there and the vinyl will hold the moisture in not allowing it to dry.

Thank you for this tutorial. I'm working on this project today. I'm curious to know why you went with metal and PVC instead of PVC and PVC?
@ptsherry16 жыл бұрын
Dan Del Real... This was my sister's idea. I think she was concerned that if we used PVC inside too that it would bend to easily if the dog got it paws up there. There was a good bit of space between posts. The metal is solid.
@texasgemtree5 жыл бұрын
Yes, pvc bends pretty easily. I have pounded conduit with a hammer. It is very hard unlike pvc. Plus the pvc would bend enough to pop right off those brackets.
@ptsherry13 жыл бұрын
@@texasgemtree sorry to just see this, but there is metal conduit from bracket to bracket. Then the PVC is around the metal conduit so it won't bend.

Please use some kind of Anchor in the PVC (POLY VINYL) fence post - that you are Screwing Into. Thr weight of all that matieral plus the weight amd tension of a cat jumping on to that pipe, may crack the PVC post

It would have been helpful to see how you installed the l brackets and then how you put on the rollers.
@ptsherry15 жыл бұрын
The L brackets were just bolted together so that the piece inside the roller is just an upside down L bracket. Then we put the end of the metal conduit over the short piece of L bracket. The bottom L bracket was bolted into the wood. It's still very stable.

That's a great idea we've got a few cats that live in our area that climb onto the neighbours shed. Then walk along our fence and torment our dogs I'm worried about if I put this up the cat falls onto our side of the fence and can't get over the fence back to the shed roof again. Worried as in the dogs will get the cat and the cats will scratch the dogs

I have a 4' chain link fence and my neighbors have two pit bulls. I was looking for a way to protect my pets and family. Not certain a roller will work on a short 4' fence line. But....I was looking at your roller and it appears to be a good idea. I read where PVC over time will not hold up to sunlight and will start to crack and crumble. Have you had any issues with the PVC?
@ptsherry16 жыл бұрын
So far we haven't had any issues. It hasn't been up that long though. If the dogs are able to completely clear the fence it may not help too much. This worked because he was putting his paws on top and pulling up. Then he'd slip off. I saw a few videos out there on how to attach them to chain link if you decide to go this route. Good luck!

@@ptsherry1 I might add on about 2' of height using post extensions. Then place a roller at the top. Thanks for your feedback. Appreciated!
@sherrymacaroni59164 жыл бұрын
Please find a way to extend your fence higher and install privacy slats. Any aggressive dog with a little adrenaline going would clear a 4 foot fence no matter what you topped it with. But 6 feet, roller bats on top, and visual stimulation reduced would make it safer.

What is the size of the wood you used inside the hollow post and the size of the brackets?
@ptsherry15 жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this question! I will double check with my sister who bought everything, but I'm pretty sure it was just 2x4 wood cut into pieces that would fit into the posts and then 2 inch L brackets. They have to be big enough to give clearance foe the pipe to roll.
@ptsherry15 жыл бұрын
We totally rigged this whole set up! Your L bracket also has to be of a size that will fit into the conduit. We really didn't think anyone would actually watch this video or we would have been more careful with all the details 😊

Dang, what kind of dog can jump a 6 ft fence?
@ptsherry16 жыл бұрын
It looks like a German Sheppard. It was not clearing the fence but was gripping the top and pulling over which is why the rollers worked. It is possible for some breeds to get over a 6 ft fence. I checked into this possibility before going through the trouble of building this. Since my dogs have a dog door and are out unsupervised, I decided it wasn't worth the risk.

We have 3 that can get over 6ft fences! They are a Australian Cattle Dog x, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a little 5kg Schipperke x that is an expert climber. They are currently behind a 2.1m (6.8ft) fence and the staffy hasn't got over yet but is managing to just reach the top of that - we will give these rollers a go to be on the safe side I think!

I had a 90 pound American Bulldog/Pit mix that could jump a 6.5 foot fence no problem in urgent situations. He jumped it once when a neighbors house caught fire and once when someone was kicking our garage door trying to get in... Come to think of it my old neighbor would kick the fence because she didn't like dogs and he jumped over to say hi to her on more than one occasion, he was always friendly to the neighbors unless they had a weedeater. He died of old age never actually running away or hurting anyone as a result of jumping it.

There was a German Sheppard that was jumping up, gripping the top and pulling himself up. He was getting further and further each time. The neighbor was not doing anything about it. My dogs have access to the yard via dog door so they are unsupervised at times. I couldn't risk that he might finally get over. I was seeing more and more of him each time. So it was either this or stop allowing my dogs to use the dog door.

PVC pipes are plastic. They deteriorate in sunlight, and then shatter when pressure is applied. Use aluminum pipes.
@guyandoren2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with this. I work extensively with PVC pipes that are outdoors 24/7 for years. Never had a problem. Also, I would love to see the type of pressure that would "shatter" a pvc pipe. It would certainly be nothing that an animal could do without major tools.

A cat can step over where you connected it to the fence.
@zongihangi112 жыл бұрын
The fence must be equipped with Abrichter cylinders, a motor and a weight sensor. The thief comes, wants to climb in, starts the engine and crushes his testicles. Of course, I wouldn't build such a fence, because some poor animal would fall victim. I would regret that, but not the thief.

can both pipes, core and outer, be PVC? So the whole system is lighter.
@ptsherry15 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm.... We went with metal inside so it wouldn't bow between the L brackets. Ours has probably 4 feet between brackets so I think PVC on PVC would definitely not be as stable for that distance, especially with a big dog pulling on it to try to climb over like we had. I hope this helps. It might work if distance is shorter 😊

The idea is that the PVC rolls around the metal pipe. So if the animal is getting in by putting paws on top and pulling over (which was the case for us), the PVC will roll and they will fall off. If the animal is totally clearing the fence, this would probably not do much good.
