It really depends on the floor situation. We like planks for bigger rooms and peel and stick for a quick DIY in smaller rooms.

Was the underlayment not needed because you were placing over vinyl or because of the planks you were using? Going to do my kitchen and laundry closet and it has vinyl flooring already on top of a concrete subfloor. Gets cold so wanted to know if it would hurt anything if I did and underlay?

Hi! Underlayment was not used because of the existing tile. You can use underlayment when recommended by the brand of planks you choose. Just remember that it will also increase the thickness of your floor which could cause your planks not to fit under door jams.

It is ok, but it might be overkill. It is a floating floor that can easily be removed. It's all of the cutting that will make it "overkill" for renters. Hope this helps. 😀
