Most places either flat out refuse to work on a Volkswagen, and those that will rarely have the filter in stock. I'm a master machinist/ME with 25 years of experience. Unbelievably, it's less of a hassle doing it myself than calling every oil change place in the city and still not finding one for literally weeks at a time. Thank you for skipping the chit chat and getting right to the point in a concise and straightforward approach. Very well done. Wanna make another video doing the freeze plugs next ?

Great video that made this easy for my first time touching a Jetta. Probably helpful to open the oil cap on the engine before draining to provide some ventilation but all in all perfectly executed. Thanks!

Oil drain plug is actually not malleable or torque to yield. Also that is a solid hard steel washer and not a hollow crush washer. Perfectly fine to reuse multiple times. Don't know how the myth of needing a new plug got started but if it makes you feel better by all means, it's a couple of bucks to replace so go right ahead. Carry on.

Just a tip for anyone else with a 2008 jetta 2.5, you should absolutely get a 76mm oil filter wrench like was shown in this video! I spent like $16 on a universal normal pliers style tool and all it did was rip up the plastic and be a total waste of time and money. I went out and got proper oil filter wrench and though I still needed a bit of extra leverage to finally loosen it, it worked first try. Highly recommend you don't skip that step.

There is a wonderful tool for draining the oil filter housing from several manufacturers (eBay, Amazon, etc.) which screws onto the dust cover housing and then screws into the valve to allow the oil to drain through a tube to your drain pan. It's about $15 and it makes life wonderful. German engineers like to design things so the DIY owner/driver will suffer physically and mentally. I actually don't know of any German car with a spin-on oil filter. I love my Mk 5 Rabbit 2.5 but I hate servicing it.

Just bought a rabbit, same engine set up. While this video was very helpful and I thank you, I miss how simple Japanese cars are. All these extra steps you need to do that make no difference and safety or performance. Toyotas usually have a cut out on the shroud that you don’t even have to remove the plastic shroud. Also the internal oil filter thing with a valve is pointless! On a normal car the gasket comes already on the filter and all you have to do is take the old filter off and make sure the gasket comes off with it ( if the gasket is baked on the engine) All this so-called technology on German cars and a Toyota will outlast any German car as far as the engine goes, this is a proven fact. I will never understand that German logic Again thank you for the video 👍

Thanks for watching and for the comment! I have always driven domestic (US) cars, but I'm a huge fan of the reliability of Japanese vehicles. The German vehicles I've worked on almost always seem to need a special tool or an extra step, regardless of the job being performed.

When you were removing the oil filter catcher I noticed a hose being extremely close to touching the oil filter. When I did mine, I noticed the hose was being corroded from all the hot oil leaking from the oil filter. Do you have any idea what is the name or part number of the hose so I can replace it ? And what I can do to prevent from this happening again ? Thank you!

Why have I never thought of pouring the extra needed oil back into the empty container?
@timsdriveway5309
@timsdriveway5309 2 жыл бұрын
Haha when I first thought of doing that, I said the same thing. I used to pour a little bit of oil into the engine, then check the level left in the jug, then repeat until I put the right amount in. But using the empty container takes the guess work out of it and makes the process a little faster. Thanks for watching!

Is it normal for there to be a second seal at top? Not the one inside the oil filter housing but where the housing screws on to. I noticed my car had a second red seal at the top. Was wondering it should be there or if previous person didn't remove it.

Was wondering if I should use a different oil for a higher mileage over 75,000?
@timsdriveway5309
@timsdriveway5309 2 жыл бұрын
If you can find a “high mileage” oil that is full synthetic, 5w-40, and VW approved, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to use it. The oils labeled “high mileage” contain additives that are supposed to condition seals and prevent excessive wear in older engines. If you can’t find the high mileage oil, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. The best thing you can do is just stay on top of your oil changes. Thanks for watching!!

Do i really need the torque wrench for this job? Its making wanna go to the shop but my car is too low🤧
@timsdriveway5309
@timsdriveway5309 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely do this without a torque wrench. I highly doubt that the last person who changed the oil on this car before me used a torque wrench because of how insanely tight the filter housing was. Honestly, the torque wrench may be a bit of overkill. You’d be fine using a regular wrench (I don’t always use a torque wrench to change the oil on a car), just try not to over tighten anything.

Recommended oil is 5w-30 full synthetic or 5w-40 not synthetic right???? You put the wrong oil ?
@timsdriveway5309
@timsdriveway5309 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t want to open up a can of worms here… For some reason asking people about their oil preference becomes a polarizing topic, but VW recommends 5w-40 full synthetic oil for this engine (which is what I used in the video). In fact, VW specifically recommends Castrol 5w-40 full synthetic oil. In the video I explained what to look for on the back of the oil jug to make sure the oil is approved by VW. Thanks for watching!

Can I use synthetic blend?
@timsdriveway5309
@timsdriveway5309 2 жыл бұрын
I’d recommend sticking with the full synthetic. But if you’re in a bind and only have a synthetic blend available, using the blend would be better than continuing to run the engine with dirty/old oil by not changing it.
