You have no idea how funny it was to watch you struggle with that filter housing.... Because I did exactly the same thing for at least an hour before giving up and buying the socket tool. Also learned the same lesson about COMPLETELY draining the filter. Thank you for including your mistakes in the video, it is so much more useful to your audience this way. I hope you keep making videos for this VW!

I'm glad you even did the segment at 2:40 pushing the orange tab up at the Oil Filter Housing. Several other people videos skip this step. One video showed a dude didn't even drain the oil out of the drain pan and did the oil filter first making a complete mess of oil running down his hand and everywhere!!! lol haha heehee

Yeah, so I bought a 74 mm specialty socket however it does not fit and just like you it was a nightmare to get it off. I managed to get it off with another tool. So my advice would be when you’re at the auto parts store there is one of those oil filter sockets that says for Toyota and Volkswagen quite possibly it’s that one except that one does not say 74 mm on it so I’m just letting you guys know what I went through as always it’s never what it supposed to be. LOL.

Might depend on the year My 2010 2.5l jetta is a 74mm - 14 flutes however some people claim they have 76mm so maybe that's the case for you.

I have a 2010 Golf with 130K, changed the oil around 13 times and still using the same old cap/washer without a leak. I only tried to drain the oil filter housing once by using the little valve but I don't want it to fail eventually so I just take the whole filter housing out slowly.

Thanks! Two q's... if I only put the car up on front wheel ramps will the tilt mess with my oil drainage? (looks like it might actually help). Also, did you reset the factory service reminders?

splatbubble drainage should be fine since the plug is in the back of the oil pan. Yes, I reset the service reminder. I believe I have a video of it.

Thanks for the video. Did you say new drain plug? Why would you need a new one unless the head was rounded off or the threads stripped?
@ModernEngineer4 жыл бұрын
I believe the torque specification is sufficient to compress the crush washer, but after it is crushed, it can't be crushed again (i.e. reinstallation). Therefore you would need a new crush washer - but as I recall, the washers don't come off of the plug, so you need a new plug and washer. I don't know how crucial it is to replace it, but I figured I would since it's recommended.

What does "torque that to spec" mean? Is it possible to overtighten?
@ModernEngineer4 жыл бұрын
Yes, torque to specification. The manufacturer has torque specifications for virtually every fastener on your vehicle. This will ensure the fasteners do not come loose while ensuring you don't over tighten. Hope this helps.
