Absolutely awesome work. I bet every homesteader is watching right now and wanting a large cooler like this. It reminds me of the one my Auntie had in her soup kitchen. My Uncle built her an outdoor kitchen because she loved feeding anybody that needed a meal. So, soup was a meal she could start the night before and serve fresh early in the morning and adding to it throughout the day. Uncle decided she needed a cooler for the fresh cows milk, cheese, and curds. And to hold meats and some fruits and veggies from the farm. The cooler still works with the help of new electricity and the outdoor kitchen has been updated. My Uncle and Auntie have passed on but the great grand kids now use it. This cooler you have built will also last forever!!!! Excellent work. Love and Blessings from Texas.

First of all wood is not a good insulator. Second wood absorbs moisture. In a freezer it can then freeze and swell causing the joints to misshape and leak precious cold. Third, damp wood is a food source for mold and can cause mold to grow inside the panel and possibly cause negative health affects. Finally, wood can absorb water vapor lowering its already low R-value. This water vapor, through freeze and thaw cycles, cause water to run down and either freeze inside the walk-in or run outside the walk-in causing an unsafe slippery floor increasing injuries and liability issues. Therefore wood is not desirable in walk-ins.

Hi Jason, I've been following your build on both channels. Great job! Justin had a lot of comments on his channel and this weekend he is traveling with Jonah so there is a strong possiblity that you will see this safety advice before he does. When you put the safety door in position on Justin vlog, I noticed that the cooler door did not have an internal latch to open the door from the inside. Due do this and being that Justin still have small kids, it truly will be wise to install a luminated panic buttom inside the cool room in case the door closes behind someone. I strongly recommend both light and bell system and that these alarms and warning lights be placed outside of the cool box, upstairs near the kitchen area and being that most farmers and homesteaders work outdoors, one should be place outside. I've done this for store owners with children that spend a lot a time around the place of business. With todays technology, I bet there's even an app that can send an alert to our phones. Please take note, love you guys and what you are doing and want all to stay safe.

That door is not the locking type handle like the old days. It's a regular magnet seal, just like a common refrigerator.

it does open from the inside. you push it and it opens pretty easy. Kids can open it. Thanks Thomas!

@@SowtheLand So Jason, it's just a magnetted strip that keeps it close and not spring loaded hinges? If so, that is great to know. The ones we use to install had night catch slam locks on them. And for the ones that stored valuable cuts of meat, wine and champaign came with lockable sliding bolts. It's been well over 15 years since I build my last cool bock and I can see the technology of the modern refridgerator door now built with no locking hardware on them, I just didnt know they made those commercial boxes the same way. Great to hear! :)

What a great walk in refrigerator...this will be a real blessing for them through the years. A couple of years ago, on Our Half Acre Homestead (In Canada), they had a refrigerator that the body of it was shot but the compressor etc. was good. He used that and built around it in his barn to hang deer and moose etc. before butchering. That was a real blessing for them also. It was not nearly as large as this walk in but big enough I think he said for 3 animals. Great job done Jason. Have a Blessed day.

looks like you forgot the vapor barrier in your build. thats the most important part bro. moisture will make.it way in and rot out your whole room. can u clarify if you vapor sealed the pitside of your room envelope or not?

Thank you for sharing this! Have been wondering how I might set up a place to store more food! It looks great! Would you mind sharing the details- (is it an attack room?Etc.) And what size and amount of materials for it, cost. Etc. (I know all that would fluctuate with the size and changing costs of materials, but just for an idea) I'd have to hire some to build it for me due to an accident and the resulting disabilities. You're right, practically speaking foam insulation in a cooler wouldn't bother me. The question is if it would bother a building inspector? He could call it a fire hazard depending on which inspector you get and what the local building codes say.

Really a cool build, thanks for al the great tips. I have a cellar completely out of concrete and stone blocks. Unfortunately it’s 20-21 Celsius all year round although it’s not heated. Would I also need to insulate?
