Project no.122 Homemade Waste Oil Jet Burner
I build this project to make used oil be useful and i might build a metal foundry.
i like the outcome of the project it is very strong and it can melt copper instantly, fire can be adjustabe with air and oil.

There was a group on yahoo yrs ago that were into babington burners! They convinced me so i built 3 or 4! All worked 2 worked really well! They used about 30 psi and used oil even bacon grease! Anything pretty much! Its a simple concept really and a small compressor works fine and the oil is free so screw all the haters!

Its hot but its also burning dirty as hell! You need more air coming in behind your nozzle tip! I would try drilling some holes around the big part of the outside cover! I would start with 3/8” ! This from a guy who built 4 or 5 similar burners called babington burners! They use compressed air going thru a brass doorknob with a .030 hole. The oil trickles down over the hole and gets atomized! I had 2 that burned tru blue and got white hot using any kind of waste oil similar to yours even bacon grease will work!

Congratulations. at 5:30 you made a basic fuel injector. at the 7:30 mark, I'm thinking you would have had better results from using a longer 1/2" diamiter pipe and threaded it thru the improvised burn chamber to form the shape. Gives you a better reference point for a round exhaust port. As per that starting ignition issue, you are making something you need to preheat to get started. Kudos just the same for a crafty build.

Thank you for the excellent video. I had a failed attempt with a true Venturi design and reviewed your video today. I did some experimentation with all parts dry fit. I tested the optimal depth to produce maximum vacuum re: air gun tip depth. Yours is cut off flush with the air chuck. I tested this flush and also recessed. As long as the tip of air nozzle is in a uniform portion of the 1/4 inch air chuck, deeper appears to be much better. There is improvement on liquid volume uptake and discharge and a significant reduction in air volume needed to produce that same liquid volume. The more flush, the finer the aerosol is. But liquid volume is much lower at a given air pressure. My point: have you tried both flush cut and also recessed?? I have not fired the system, only using water as the analog. With liquid valve tuning I think the recessed tip (like 1/8-3/16 inch) may offer a wide tuning band for both air and liquid due to the huge vacuum signal generated. I’m excited to complete the system, following your template. Many many thanks. And BTW: it really sips air. With a 40 gallon tank it is almost a tiny leak worth of airflow to generate a massive liquid output Exceptional work Sir.

Not to hijack this guys work but when I built my babbington burners the hole required to atomize the fuel was 30 to 40 thousands of an inch as opposed to this design which is much bigger! Babbinton burners dont mix the fuel with the air the same way. This design mixes fuel with the air then it is ignited. In a Babbington burner the fuel trickles down over a brass doorknob (ball) with the 30 / 40 thou. Hole drilled into the front of the doorknob. The air goes into the doorknob and is not mixed with the fuel as the point of ignition is right after the ball! The fuel runs down over the front of the ball where the small diameter hole is and the xcess fuel runs into a sump where it is pumped back up to a container then gravity fed down over the ball again to repeat the process! Or you can not pump it so that when the fuel runs out the burner goes out! A needle or 1/4 turn valve is used to control the flow of fuel as well as a valve to also control the air! They only need a small compressor to feed about 30 to 40 psi. An airbrush or in my case a used refrigerator compressor worked great! They burn any kind of fuel cept gasoline and burn blue once the air/ fuel mixture is dialed in! There is no smoke if they are tuned correctly suggesting a mostly complete 100% combustion! Mine really worked well and I actually built 3! One guy in the group I was in built a really nice one out of all stainless steel and used it to heat his house! Most used them as shop heaters and the like by shooting it thru a long like 4in steel pipe with a 90deg bend straight up for a vent to the outside! The actual burner being outside the shop or whatever and the 4” pipe going along the inside wall of the shop then up so it could vent! They burn very clean but a vent is still necessary for the carbon monoxide produced! In fact when mine got hot there was virtually no smell at all!

I think the fine mist created this way is more important, otherwise the droplets may not fully burn and cause a dirty flame full of soot.
@StonemanRocks
@StonemanRocks 4 ай бұрын
@@TDG2654 but they dont! You get almost 100% atomization! You can tell by the color of the flame! Blue then white and you have no soot! A lot of it is how well you build the thing too including what tools you have to work with! If you have access to a metal lathe and can tig weld etc…it will go a long way towards your final product! I did not but still managed to build at least one that would burn white hot using atf (transmission fluid) just what I had laying around at the time!

You'll end up fouling your metal unless you have a closed top crucible, any metal melted from waste oil will result in a brittle cast that forms cracks easily and has no tensile strength, best just to stick to LPG.

If you had that jet oil burner firing on one side of a galvanized heat ducting and venting to the outside at the end you could have yourself a waste oil jet heater to heat a building with nothing more than the waste oil from anybody who brings it to you. How many years ago when I was much younger, one of those quick slash instant oil change places I had that set up and it saved tons of money Heating in the winter here in minnesota... between the 43rd and 49th parallel north lines.

Put a thick steel plate about 25mm in front of the nozzle, with a 6mm hole directly in front of the nozzle. With a couple rings of 3-4mm even 5-6mm, holes. Heat it with the torch, first until red, then start the air and fuel, and ignite from the rear, with the plate 3-6mm thick, welded to the inside of the can/ combustor. The hot grid will straighten incoming air also holding heat. To keep the fuel ignited, the remaining metal in the plate should be 1.5mm thick or not thicker than 2mm, so a 3mm hole should be no more than 5mm on center a 6mm should 7.5mm to 8mm on center, a 5 mm hole, 6mm on center, (center to center of two holes) forming a ring around a 6-8mm hole it will greatly improve performance of the burner!!! ✌️

So many complaints from others about the air compressor this uses! Building a turbine to provide airflow like a jet engine is no easy job. A pulse jet design with a diesel fuel injector might work, but you’ll still probably need propane (LNG) to bring it up to oil combustion temperature, and maybe compressed air as well. Those pulse jet engines are LOUD, and definitely not for indoor use! I like the simplicity of what you’ve built, and wouldn’t change it. It does what it needs to do, at low cost, and isn’t likely fail in disastrous ways.
