If I may be so bold....for those who have interest in saving money, the filter media Deb is describing works great on hang-on-back filters too. Here is my short video about it. I use this for my 11 tanks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKGYc6p7rahko9E

I built something similar with a powerhead but got tired of changing the filter floss. Now I use 2 sponge filters & a HOB on my 20gl tank. I get the same results without the constant floss changes.

Hi Les.. I get it at our local grocery store. It's silly really. I hate having unsightly things in my aquariums. Not fond on sponge filters so I try to minimize them. I just wandered through until I found a bottle that would work. As it happens it's a product I use often. I'm all for saving money!! Have a great weekend!😁💗💦

So simple yet so effective - it baffles me why people throw chemical media (which often cocks up the bacteria) at the tank as poly wool does the job with none of the side effects. Groovy.

Thanks much, Maa'm for your hard work. Much appreciated. Do you think a 40 gallons will be blown by this? I can see my PetSmart has 1200 model which I think more power than needed by my Flowerhorn. If you think it will be much stronger for my 40 gallons than I will not try this. Basically fighting against algae bloom (so much greenish water).
@DebTim
@DebTim 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Piyush... I had one in my 40 gallon it did a wonderful job.. just make sure the power is not over strong. It will help with algae but you will need to change the fluff often. Good Luck

@@DebTim thanks Ma'm . I got Marineland Magnum polisher to fight algae and when it's clear, I will use the normal filter cartridge for daily use. That filter is great and really doing a great job, moreover, we can charge the micron cartridge with Diatom Earth. I didn't charge it yet, but yes, will do in evening. Currently, it's running with micron without being charged yet. I used stockings to fill BIO media in the filter's tube and used normal foam cartridge to clear dust, now I am running micron cartridge. Petsmart selling that filter in just 32 dollars (down from 90 dollars), so if you like, you can grab one. Have a nice day ahead
@nehupiyu
@nehupiyu 3 жыл бұрын
Alright, So followed the steps given in "How to boost the polishing power of your marineland magnum polishing filter" video. and It has miraculously cleared the tank overnight. I've had a very bad shape of green water, I charged this micron filter with Diatomaceous earth powder, the exact brand is NON pool refined. The brand is "Bonide - Diatomaceous Earth crawling insect killer" powder. Got it from Ace hardware in about 8 dollars. Poured 6 table spoons in deep bucket, and submerged the filter until those two tiny holes are out at the top. Ran it for 20 minutes and bucket was crystal clear. Then, put the filter in the tank and started it overnight.. The result is just outstanding, it's so clear that my flowerhorn (kamfa) named Atom is floating in the air. One thing to note here that this micron filter is NOT for daily use. Many guys complained about the filter stopped working after few months, I am guessing that's because of micron is getting fully clogged, resulting overhead operation of filter, making it bad! The other filter pad and bio media tube are the ones for regular daily driver, don't use micron as daily filter, instead use it as-an-when-needed! Hope this helps, Please ask questions here and I will try to reply ASAP. Have a healthy fish keeping to all. P.S. - This filter is on sell at PetSmart for 32 dollars (instead of 89 dollars regular). Grab it and you won't regret it! Thanks once again Maam, I will try this powerhead solution DIY too when needed.

tried everything exactly as you did, way too loud, it is caused by the poly being sucked up, makes a loud humming noise, well at least i have an extra pump if i need it.

Hi Pro... oh yes I should have mentioned that. I cut a double layer of window screen and stuffed it up before the fluff. Also when you do start hearing noise it's dirty. The noise happens just like you thought from the fluff being pulled in. Good luck and let me know if it's better please! 😬

Yay! I have been watching for this and am definitely going to make some. Question - you are using (2) 1200 pumps for the big 75 gallon that is heavily stocked. Can you/should you use smaller sizes for smaller tanks? I bet that Amazon is puzzled by the sudden uptick in combined power head and apple cider vinegar purchases. LoL :)
@DebTim
@DebTim 6 жыл бұрын
HI Rocky... I promise when you make one and see the difference it makes you will love it! I have 1200 at one end and a 900 at the other. haha... you can just use water bottles but then you will see a clear bottle with dirty fluff in it all the time. That would drive me loco. I just hunted around the grocery store for a bottle that would work for my purpose. I love the black bottle as it blends in so well. The one you purchase depends on the type of fish you home. I do not run them in anything smaller than a 55 here at home and my son runs one in his 40. My Geos have a 1200 in the 150 but only one in the middle back of the tank and I turne the flow to run against the back glass. They are still water swimmers and don't like much current. That's what's so nice about being able to direct the flow. I can't wait to see your tanks getting setup!! You are driving me nuts!! lol I'm waiting for plants so I can do a major redo on my 55. Have a great day!😁💗💦

I LOVE this! I’m going to look for a way to install one in my sump..... I have a couple of those Maxi-jets around here somewhere. How often do you need to clean the powerhead itself? Does the intake get gunked up? 👍🏻👍🏻Awesome video Deb!
@DebTim
@DebTim 6 жыл бұрын
HI Cindy... you know that's a great plan. The power head I seldom remove from the tank. I just pull the bottle off. The fluff picks up any detritus or microparticles so it stays really clean. Water change days I will just give it a quick rinse. I have a bunch of these in my junk supply collection. Although, over time they wear out or just get noisy. Thanks for coming by. Have a great weekend. Hope to talk soon!😁💗💦

I just built one of these yesterday - it works great!!! Its like a cyclone on my 15g tanks - but does it ever filter everything out! Most of the fish were excited to play in the current too. Haven't used it on my big tanks yet. You're a genius!! It reminds me (vaguely... as this is Aquaman powered) of the air driven gravel vacuum my father used in the late 60s. I feel like I should build a bunch and give them away! Way cheaper and easier than importing Eheim Pickup filters and buying a voltage transformer. All hail the Queen of Ontario. **bow bow**

haha Cavey you are so sweet but I can't take credit for the idea just for my version of the build. I wouldn't have a tank without anymore. My 150 has 2 in it... and the fish love the circulation too. too often people don't believe the rule of thumb "one inch of average fish per gallon". I mean what are you supposed to do if you work in a busy tropical fish store and every other new customers asks "About how many fish can you put in a tank" and for them, who may not be paying customers or own a tank yet, its "about one inch of fish per gallon". There are 24,000 species of fish on earth, it would take forever to measure all of them.
