+Roman Biller great video, learned a lot. I've made a couple of test bottle/bulb assemblies and tested with incandescent tubular bulbs (waiting on small L.E.D's) because the problem is the heat from bulb gets bottle hot and it develops cracks at the neck where it's connects to the union!!! questions: connection too tight at bottle pipe? I've used steel and plastic washers. (I won't give away the Secret here🙄) Maybe venting bottle at this union? what bulb do u use? I know the LED will stop the heat problem, but they are expensive and hard to find. any help would be great as I'm in the middle of a build and don't want to wait until you post the bottle attachment vid😆😆...thanks again.

+MrSjeupie Thanks!
@CalebFaulkner8 жыл бұрын
+MrSjeupie I wouldn't say impossible, you could clamp the switch down in a vice like he had on his bench, and drill down into it with a dremel or regular drill! It wouldn't definitely be MUCH more challenging though!
@Hellsong898 жыл бұрын
+MrSjeupie What? Just couple days ago i drilled straight hole all free handing with cordless drill. It all depends on your stance, grip and i guess experience. The "pin" trough the switch is terrible idea, specially when it has treads in it and its connected to all metal frame of the lamp. Just think about what will happen when eventually treads will cut trough insulation of the wires ,cause whole assembly will move slightly every time nub is turned. I really hope this thing is grounded, or we will get another Darwins award soon...
@klausadrift75683 жыл бұрын
@@Hellsong89 I totally agree. Drilling through the switch could inadvertently damage the wires and you wouldn't even know it, until the day you receive an electric shock. A better solution would be to screw on a bigger nut or a thick plastic ring on to the switch and then drill a small hole through the bolt or plastic ring body only.
@markf.40638 жыл бұрын
I really like the functionality of the design but I wonder about serviceability of that rotary switch if it ever fails. With the valve body JB welded in place like this it's going to be a pain to get back out.

@lordgarion5146 жыл бұрын
Just found your channel. Nice vid. Only thing is I don't think I'd have J-B welded the whole thing together like that. You put quite a bit of time into it, so what happens if the switch fails and it's permanently bonded? A couple drops of a weaker thread locking compound seems ideal.
@demonkey1237 жыл бұрын
Your drilling into the rotary switch then driving a screw through it, the potential for touching live components is high. I would use a wide nut on the the back thread of the switch, then drill and tap the nut.

Hello there. Thanks for sharing. I have a quick question. I am used to working on DC powered electric systems so AC is a little foreign to me. So this question may be stupid but if I were to make a simple wire/plug/socket assembly and wanted to implement this into it, there is no "plus" (positive) or "negative" (negative/ground) wire, they are both the same? OR coming from the socket there is a difference? Im quite confused lol. Also, if there is a positive and ground , which side would i hook this water valve switch to? Thanks for your time Charles
@MechaTama318 жыл бұрын
+Charles Robinson They're not exactly the same. One of them is the neutral, which is connected to earth ground back at the electrical panel. The other one is called the hot. Electrically, many devices will probably work just fine even if you get them mixed up, but it can be a safety issue. For example, on a light socket, the rim/threaded part should be connected to neutral, as that part is the easiest to inadvertently touch. The hot should be connected to the little stud at the bottom of the socket. Much more difficult to electrocute yourself that way. ;)
@charlesrobinson55818 жыл бұрын
+MechaTama31 thanks for the reply! All of that being said, is there a rule of thumb on which wire is hot and which 1 is generally neutral, like with the prongs? Like the "fatter" prong actually plugging into the wall is usually___ and the skiny___. I do own a volt meter and will definitely use too, just curious... Thanks :)
@charlesrobinson55818 жыл бұрын
+MechaTama31 and also in the case of this build would I online this switch to the neutral or hot? My inferences tells me the neutral of course but I just want to be sure. Thanks again!!
@MechaTama318 жыл бұрын
+Charles Robinson The wide blade should be the neutral, the white conductor. The narrow blade should be the hot, the black conductor. And the big round prong should be ground, the green conductor. If your plug is grounded, it may not necessarily have wide and narrow blades, they may both be narrow. But if you take a look at a typical modern grounded electrical outlet, you should be able to orient the plug to it and see which slot is wider and treat that side of the plug accordingly. As for where to put the switch, I would put it on the hot, personally. You always want to have the neutral/ground hooked to something. Imagine this: You've just stuck your finger in a light socket. If the hot has been disconnected, you'll probably not feel a thing. If both the hot and neutral are hooked up, you're going to get a shock, but most of it is going to be contained in your finger, as your finger is probably also touching the side of the socket, providing a path back to neutral. But if the neutral is what's been disconnected, then that shock is going to have to travel through your whole body to get to ground. And the single best piece of advice I can give you: If you're not sure of what you're doing with line voltage, don't do it. Learn enough about it to be comfortable with what you're doing, or get help from someone with electrical experience. Electricity isn't voodoo or anything, but it's invisible, it's potentially lethal, and it can sometimes behave counterintuitively. Be safe.

Beautiful work, man! I was wondering, it may be possible to switch this switch to a potentiometer and develop a dimmer?
@shawnewing39717 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, however I would generally advise against it simply because the big red handle is made so one can apply a lot of torque. It would work great for you, but the first kid/ guest wanting to fiddle with your super cool home made switch would probably spin past the stop point of the tiny little switch inside. There are ways to fix this problem as well, it just makes things more complicated and less elegant.
