I have looked a lot of window box DIY videos and this was the best one. I just built three of these but I used a 1x2 board across the bottom instead of the little ledger boards to make it sturdier for holding the plastic boxes. I sanded and stained them and they look great. Thanks for the easiest and the most cost effective way to have great looking boxes. Three boards $2.56 =$7.68 and the plastic totes $8.00 for a total of $15.68. That is $5.23 for each one. Will use plumbers tape and old shelf supports to hold mine up. Thanks again.

I've got the same old craftsman table saw. Got mine free off the side of the road. Looking to make my wife some window boxes, looks like a good system you got.

That was an incredible find! It's crazy what gets thrown away sometimes. Yeah we leave them up all year and these are on their second year and they look like they did when I built them.

I use coffee filters (new or used ones) in the bottom to cover drainage holes to prevent soil running out the bottom.

Add gravel at the bottom of those trays next time. By adding only soil only you risk drowning plants when watering them. If you add a layer of soil you give the extra water you add a chance to escape to the bottom and since you really sprayed them there's a chance you'll have a lot of dead plants if you keep that up. You can also just add holes to the bottom too.
@SimonSaysDIY

Thanks! I actually drilled a few holes in the bottom of the containers. It drains really well.

Only thing I would have done different is made them longer and add more holes to the plastic tubs. Great job! I came looking here after getting frustrated with pinterest to see if someone had a similar idea i had in mine! Thank you!

I have the same window and wondering how to hang it without drilling it into the bricks. Thank you for the idea of using the copper. Where did you get the copper?

You can also use good quality artificial plants and flowers. Trust me, from the street you can't tell. Plus, you don't have to water them and you can change them with the seasons. Just store them and you can reuse them until they're too sun bleached or damaged from the elements.
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, these window boxes would work great for real of artificial flowers. Thanks!

A year later, how have the copper straps held up? Did you take down during winter or keep up?
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 4 жыл бұрын
They held up really well. We left them out over the winter, the house looks so much nicer with them even without plants.

😻 this is amazing! I saw another tutorial that I would have to drill on the siding. I was going to stop thinking about this project. Thank you so much!!! Super easy! Question, my window frame is metal, can I still do this how you did it?
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Glad I could help! you should still be able to as long as there is wood behind the metal or the metal is thick enough to support the weight. You may need a screw that is made for metal like a metal roofing screw. I would also put a bit of silicone caulk around the screws to prevent moisture from getting behind the metal. Good luck!

Do you think this would work on the inside of my house?
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think this would work inside as well. But you would want to have a tray to catch the water at the bottom or just skip the step of drilling drainage holes in the plastic totes.

Is there any benefit to using the plastic containers versus just adding a bottom board with drainage and placing the planters directly in the planter?
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 4 жыл бұрын
I left the bottom open. to keep the wood from getting wet and potentially rotting or attracting termites. Not the wood I used was pressure treated so it may have been fine to have a bottom but I thought I'd try this.
