On the forstner bits, the slower you drill the better. I use them on my lathe and have it turned down to around 100 rpm’s and get long continuous ribbon shavings. I know you don’t have one, but go grab a cheap drill press from harbor freight. You can pick up a pretty nice one for under $100, even less with a coupon. I’ve been using one for a few years now that I spent like $70 on. They’re great for what you and I are doing where you don’t have to be precise down to the .001’s. You’ll be glad you did when you do. Makes life much easier. Love your creations, brother. Most all are pure art. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos.

What are you using to knock off the char? I have yet to burn something as dark as your doing, my wife and I just do some charred projects as our hobby time together, but the first time she charred something and tried to sand when it didnt work as she hoped it just kind of smudged it everywhere and didnt really sand it. But you seem to be successful knocking down heavy char (almost full burn) down to about the perfect grainy look. I know it was time lapsed a bit but how much time would you say it took, and what tools did you use to go from black and cracking to perfectly charred grain lines?
@BuildDadBuild5 жыл бұрын
I use Dico brushes (that fit a normal drill): amzn.to/2Yq3akF It only takes a couple of minutes to knock off the char, the video is sped up to show more of the process. Another good reason to drill the holes before burning: the wood will seal better so water, in the case of the planters, will not sip into the wood. Also, before pulling the trigger on a drill press I recommend you guys to search on pinterest for homemade/diy drill presses, there are a lot of good ones over there super easy and cheap to make. I made one using a piece of 4x4 about 7 inches long I had laying around, a piece of 2x4 put on top of it (basically forming a T), some pieces of 1x3 to form a cradle for the drill to sit in and for strengthening the back of the T and a rail from some cabinet that was thrown away. The rail sits on top of the T, the cradle attaches to it and then you adjust the drill for the correct 90deg angle and height before securing it. Really easy to make and all materials were scrap laying around.

Dude..! You always inspire me, but this time you just plain beat me to it. I've been experimentin' with some cool stains, over here in the UK, so will let you know how my candle holders turn out... For the Forstner bits, you need a bench drill press runnin' at a slower rpm. Usin' a hand power drill [as you found out] is way too troublesome...

Thanks, brother! A drill press is definitely on the wish list. Let me know how they turn out. Cheers!

We have tools, fire, skulls and whiskey. All we need is a bikini model, but this is a family show....

It's already been mentioned a few times, but it's time for a shop upgrade my man. A drill press will open up a variety of things that you didn't even think you were missing. Do not waste your time with a cheap Harbor Freight bench top like I did for half a day. It cost me 70ish bucks and just wasn't doing the job. The next morning I hit up an estate sale and found a nice half inch floor model. It's older than I am... but it puts in some serious work for me. Also... The skulls are now just little ghosts. Or spirits. Either way, it's seriously cool. Keep that thing like a trophy. Definitely do a coaster video. I watch all of your videos and draw inspiration for things I sell at craft fairs. Keep the goods coming bro! Including the failures... so many of us have tweaked wrists from forstners in a hand drill. maybe this prevented that for someone.

Hey brother! Thanks for the insight. Believe me a drill press is on the list! I'm fairly positive a drill press and band saw would make my life leaps and bounds better. So, I'm definitely keeping an eye out. And the skulls...they're sitting in my office! Stay tuned for the coaster vid...should be out in 2 weeks barring any catastrophic failures! Cheers! 👍🥃👍🥃👍🥃
