DIY Wood Burning Technique - That's not Shou Sugi Ban! Or is it??

I use this burnt wood finish technique on most (if not all) of my builds. This is a How To get that burnt wood finish or How To stain wood with fire...and stain! There's always an argument over if this technique is true Shou Sugi Ban or not. So, I'll just call it a Torched Wood Finish!!
I get asked a lot how I achieve this look, so I figured I'd make a video showing my process.
Anybody else like to light projects on fire?

I have striped and restain using all kinds of methods . never have i done any wood burning like this , but always wanting to try new things to improve my skills and this is it . Thanks for the video

Sugi (Japanese cypress), the su part is like soo, as opposed to shoe. You'll see this burnt sugi siding on traditional homes because of its excellent resistance to rot. Sugi is a great building material because even prior to burning it resists both pests and water. I've built with both pine and sugi and while pine is a heavier material, it doesn't hold up over time unless pressure treated, when exposed to the elements for years on end. Keep your stick on the ice.

Hey mate, I've been in the 2pac kitchen/timber refinishing/french polishing industry (mostly as a painter) since I was 16 (now 29) Your burning technique is very good, I just wanted to let you know with the burning then sanding like you do its closer to a "Patina" technique than anything else I believe (burn, sand, stain, sand, seal, sand, top coat would be the 100% correct way but your way is fine. Also patina can of course be done no burning just mixing different stains to create an older look. Its also a technique done on some old school hot rods) Either way, I'd just like to say that you do a top notch job! Keep up the good work!

Possibly Shellac? I think that would be the closest. I've never found anything that works like Simple Finish so I think the price tag is totally worth it. For what it's worth a little goes a long way. I used it on my workbench project and used less than a 1/4 of a pint!

I really like those last two. I'm about to start on an accent wall in my living room and either of those last two finishes would look awesome.

You said subscribe, so I did! I have done 2 burn projects, a door and a desk. Both with a small torch like yours. They turned out well, I just used poly for a finish. I've never thought of more of a finish. Cool video!

Smoked cocktails rock! I watched a video where a dude smoked lemons and then used the juice to make a whiskey sour. I'm sooooo trying that!
