DIY Wooden Riding Lawn Mower Ramps / Lift - A riding lawn mower lift can cost $200 or more in the store. And taking off the deck can be a hassle. Avoid both with these simple detachable ramps that allow you to work under your mower without taking off the deck. You can easily change your blade without taking off the deck.

Built this last night in order to change the blades on my John Deere. Used some leftover 2x6 boards, but substituted cinder blocks for the top part where the wheels rest. Worked great and saved me from buying a ramp or removing the deck. Thanks!

To help the ramps to grip on smooth concrete (both as ramp and the partial when used a chock), consider stapling a rubberized shelf liner to the bottom of the ramps. The weight of the mower will increase the grip.

I was thrilled to find this tutorial! I'm a lawn mowing fanatic and always clean the undercarriage of my mower each time I use it. Before making the ramp I would have to lay on the ground and shove my arm in as far as I could to reach all the nooks and crannies with my crazy hand-made tools. The tutorial is great and while it was pretty easy to make, there were a few things we altered. I didn't realize each ramp needs the bolts (that hold the pieces together) on EACH SIDE of the ramp or you can't easily carry or move it. Also, I found my tractor was moving the ramps on our gravel driveway when I tried to drive up them. My husband solved that by hammering some nails in the bottom of each ramp to use as "traction spikes" (I usually clean my mower on the lawn) and that stopped them from budging. All in all it's a great idea!

What I love about this ramp is that it CAN'T fail. If you used this for a car or truck of virtually any weight, it's not prone to bending like steel or cracking like plastic. I may make a set of four of these to elevate my cars completely.

This is a very sturdy and well built mower. I thought I wouldn't like the foot operated speed control but after one use kzbin.infoUgkxTZSPVwJFBv2hORqhQamtxi-tAe5K2EtC , I can't believe I ever had one without it. It drives like a car with an automatic transmission. Easy to adjust mowing speed according to grass depth/thickness. I have yet to get used to the long throw of the blade engagement lever but kind of get why it is that way. It allows you to hold mowing for short moments if you need. The engine seems very substantial and the frame has very little flex, both adding up to an impressive package. All my previous tractors were 18 to21 hp with 42in decks. This one is 23/46. I mow about 1.5 acres about every 5 days here in Alaska and that mowing time has been reduced by about 20%, partly due to the very tight turning radius. No loop arounds lol. Hour meter, cruise control, reverse mowing capability,deck cleanout and easy assembly all add up to a very well thought out tractor.

I was a knucklehead and tried to use a mix of 4x4 and 2x4 scraps I had laying around. I got the top part where the wheels rest done that way, then broke down and bought a 2x8 for the ramp part. The $9 I saved cost me about 4 hours of work. I guess that just shows the value of my labor is $2.25/hour. It works great, though. My advice - just follow the directions on the video.

GREAT idea but I would like to offer a tip if I may. When you are measuring a board, put your speed square under the tape measure to the desired length, move the tape out of the way, then make your cut mark. Why? When you use your tape to get the length you then have to line up the speed square to the mark to get your cut line. That is 2 measurements to get a cut line. Granted, for this project it may not be that big of a deal as far as precision length cuts but it will save you marking the board twice. Repeat that savings of time over 10 total boards, it will save some time and increase accuracy. Try it once, you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for sharing. I thought about buying a pair of ramps, but they hinder blade access. Your method solves the problem. I actually use a rechargeable impact wrench ($30+) that is a Makita clone and a dent on the lawn. Very safe and fast. If you have to, you can dig a slit on the ground to access blade screws. I bought a HF lift for tractors. Too much hassle to use each time (because assembled each time), and not safe. I had to wrap the front wheels on the racks very securely.

Great vid! You may even extend the top with a 2x8, on top of another 2 stocks of 2x8's, and ramp it with 2x8's longer boards as well. The challenge? The top angle should be as small as possible or your blade(s) center bolt or nut and deck bottom will hit the joint of wood making the blade(s) contact the deck and spark. I'm "smoothering" (lowering) that angle on a ramp I made notice, with 2x8-8 footers long, yet, the deck and center bolt were able to hit my Z aluminum end holder on top of the bed of my truck back door. The deck hit the exterior edge border of the Z, so am planing on raisin one end of the way, which the beginning on top of the bed is easier to raise with just couple 2x8 boards passing on top of the Z supporter, and may have smooth the angle remaining on the ramps. Hope you understand.

Awesome design I built them the other day came out great only thing I added was another set of 1/4” cables to the other side as well as 1/2 4” bolts to add stability to the ramp. With only one side braced i felt the wood kick out didn’t seem to sturdy. Not sure if I will have a hard time removing the bolt washer from the inside once it’s under the mower due to clearance but should be able to snake my hand Around. I noticed in the video when you drove up the Ramps the wood kicked a bit from the other side not braced. Much thanks again for the design.. genius 👍🏻

Great idea, but as I thought it would, the ramp slipped on my garage floor. Even with a rubber mat at the bottom it slipped. Solution: Put tall end of the ramp against the concrete edge where my garage door closes. (You could also put 2x4s lengthwise between the tall ramp end and a wall.) I didn't do the removable part. I only made the ramp so I can clean the deck; for this it works fine without the removable part.

Hey Flip. Another idea is to take the part you just removed from the front and place them behind the back wheels, so the mower doesn't roll backwards on you if the brake fails.

Maybe a hinge on one side and a screen door hook assembly on the other to keep them from flopping around when you're carrying them. You could also rig a hook on the hinge side to secure them in the folded/open position.

Great video! So far I still can't find the answer to my Troy bilt engine sound that I'm looking for.. When startup from a choke, it makes several bang bang sound "not backfire" but it's like hummm...bang..bang...hmmm..put..put.. bang, bang... When switched to rabbit, then it's fine, but engine is really loud.. I saw several KZbin of lawnmower running, but mine sound so loud, not quiet and smooth

@@fixitFlip One last question Flip... I need to build something to be able to support my Troybilt Rider while I do a complete overhaul..less engine rebuild. Something to easily support the Mower body with Tires removed. My Older Brother ... nearly 70 trs old.. Rebuild riders,push, 4 wheelers.etc and gave me an electric winch to mount in my Garage ceiling. He raises each end and supports the axles with Jack Stands.. I can do this (after I mount the winch} ... but thought you might have another Genius Ride-on platform that might transform into a frame support? Any suggestions... or just stay with the Jack Stands? Thanks

Take a 4x4 or 6x6 and cut into three pieces (two @1.5', one @3.0'). Angle cut the drive-up end. Line the three pieces up. Drive mower up one side at a time. Pull out center piece. Do same on other side. Easy.

I saw on your video about greasing your Cub Cadet that you had a jack. Couldn’t you just jack up the lawn mower and put blocks under the wheels? Or is the jack not high enough?
@fixitFlip
@fixitFlip Жыл бұрын
My little jack is pretty small. This gets me a little higher. But yeah, with a jack, you would want to get a jack stand or put the blocks under the wheels for more stability. You can do it either ay. I just try and provide different ways of doing things for people with different resources. Plenty of people just use a jack.

Yes both Troy-Bilt mowers and Yard Machine are made by MTD, so they are very much alike. The setup and everything. The same methods should work. You might want to double check your manual if you have one, but it should be very similar.

If you take a 1/4" off each board (11-3/4, 15-3/4, 19-3/4, 23-3/4 and 27-3/4), you only need (1) 16' 2"x8" or (2) 2"x8"s. Otherwise, you're 4 inches short per 8 feet.
