Just got my first few tools to start woodworking. I've been looking into different workbench designs on KZbin, and I have to say, yours is by far the best I've found - most versatile while remaining mobile, easily adaptable to extensions or other modifications, and all while staying aesthetically pleasing. Great job!!

That drawer front mounting technique is genius, and laying out and drilling the drawer handle locations before mounting them must be so much easier than doing it in place. I missed it on wood whisperer, glad I caught it here.

You could mount the dust hood on the dropdown mitersaw platform for quicker use. And maybe you could also add a power extension cord through the platform to have power for your saw directly next to it.

i have a similar table, and one thing i hate is the opening where the saw is when it is folded down. This gave me a great idea!. to work out for the dust hood design to be on hinges also. where it folded down flat over the saw creating that flat work surface across the entire table.

Jesse, you do not have to use Rockler T-Track. Powertec, and well as Clear Style for black t-track, very good buys on Amazon and also look at Shop Fox red T-Track. If you are willing to wait a bit you can really save yourself some money at www.Banggood.com . It's a great site for price and unique tools. Good building.

I'd also like to throw out in addition to the t-track, you can use irwin quick-grips (or any clamp with the removable top jaw)! Just drill holes in a grid pattern or regular intervals. Then you can thread the quick grips through the holes as needed.

Just a note for folks who might want to build this: the traditional way to mount the vice is behind the apron, or board on the edge of the surface. You loose a bit of clamping depth, but gain a long reference.

I feel your pain on dropping the sheet goods on your toe (my left one too). I was re-arranging stuff in my garage and had to move a sheet of mdf. I was in flip flops as I wasn't working out there, just needed to get to something behind the sheet. I used a gator grip to set the sheet down but didn't realize due to the awkward angle i was at to keep pressure on the grip that the sheet had set down on the wheel of a cooler - when the resistance was felt i thought it was down so released it - it rolled off and smashed my left big toe - severing the toenail which ended up having to be removed. Also chipped a bone in the toe as well - but at least it gave me an excuse to get caught up with my tetanus booster lol! Hope your foot recovers quickly!

With your fist set of wheels you had a supporting block in the middle of your bench, so it was supported ones you flipped the wheels up. Now you don't have that option anymore and I also do not see the supporting block anymore. Is the workbench now not bending because of all the weight and only being supported at the 4 corners?

next time it might be easier to double up your ply... have a solid top screwed down to your blocked out frame then attach your routed ply wit track on top of that? this keeps the strength of the wood for the top and you don't have to worry about going through with screws for the track.

Doesn't the miter saw extend forward beyond the front edge of the bench when stowed? Looks like by just enough to bang your shins against time and time again when working at the bench. The solution would have been to have the folding platform hinge several inches rearward and the saw stowing slightly lower and rearward. Waddaya think?
@SpecimenSpiff4 жыл бұрын
I'd been thinking of making a simpler version of the bench Woodshop Junkies has, and I really like what you've done here. But I really want my table saw built in. How difficult do you think it would be to adjust these plans for that?

@@sexmachinefigz I modified the plans for this table to include a torsion box at one end, a hole in the top to push the table saw up through, and a shelf with stops to mount the saw on. Works great, but I'm still trying to improve storage and dust collection.

One question and one comment. Did the loss of the middle support legs compromise the rigidity of the unit at all? Also, I like how you maintained the continuity of the grain on the drawer fronts. Not sure you gave yourself credit for that, but you should have if you didn't.

@jakebaran4 жыл бұрын
Great video! I have a question. When is it beneficial to use a track saw instead of a table saw (and vice versa)? Thanks!
@bbfoto72484 жыл бұрын
@Jake Baran There are already some excellent videos and write-ups regarding this. Do a search. But in a nutshell, a good Track & Plunge Saw is most useful for Breaking Down Large Sheet Goods such as 4' x 8' plywood and MDF into more manageable sized pieces that can then be quickly & precisely cut on a table saw and/or miter saw. A good track saw can be just as accurate as a table saw if time is taken during the layout & setup of the track. A large Festool "MFT" type table top (Multi-Function Table) with precisely spaced and drilled 3/4" or 20mm bench dog holes would make precise layout & track saw cutting very quick and easy. And the MFT style table tops are also extremely useful for clamping and securely holding down your work pieces for various duties including drilling, routing, planing, assembly, finishing, etc. But in general a Track Saw would usually take more time to lay out and position the track to complete each cut as compared to a large table saw. Another limitation of the Track/Plunge Saw is not being able to make quick dado or wide groove and rabbit/rebate edge cuts. But this can be done quickly if you also have a base/guide for your router that fits on the track as shown in this video. You also must take time & care to not cut into your workbench's table surface using the track/plunge saw. ;) You can either use an appropriate size piece of "sacrificial" rigid foam insulation board on top of your workbench (under the sheet to be cut) or place the sheet to be cut on top of appropriately spaced "Bench Cookie" risers placed in the workbench surface's 3/4" or 20mm dog holes. Track saws are fantastic if you don't have the space in your shop or money for a large table saw with the extra side and rear extension wings to help support large sheet goods while cutting them. You can temporarily set up the track saw outside of your shop on a few stable saw horses and break down your large sheets right as you pull them out of your truck before hauling them into your smaller workshop. I personally prefer and use a good DIY vertical Panel Saw for breaking down my sheet goods. This is similar to the type you would find at a Home Center lumberyard. The vertical orientation of the panel saw just works better for my shop setup. The panel saw is placed right at the entry to my shop so that sheet goods can be broken down right off the truck. Then, both my miter saw station and table saw are positioned just beyond the panel saw on either side for a natural workflow progression. You can make a DIY track saw track and use your regular circular saw. From the ones I'very seen on KZbin, I like the DIY "Upgraded" track that *Wesley Treat* made on his KZbin channel. Hope this helps.
