Great sifter Captain Matt 👍👍 I do have a suggestion you may or may not want to toy with. The suggestion would be to take the wheels off the sifter with the 1/4" screen. Then put it directly on top of the frame with the 1/8" screen and lock them together with 1" furring strips at the four centers. The furring strips would be attached to the 1/4" frame and hang down about 1" which would allow it to lock on top of the 1/8" frame. With that being done the bedding and worms would get added to the top frame with the 1/4" screen. The when the sifting is done the large worms and what does not fall through the 1/4" can get flipped into a tote/tray, then under the light or into another tub. The cocoons, small worms and undigested material smaller than a 1/4" but larger than an 1/8" would be on the bottom screen and can get flipped into a different tote/tray/tub. The castings would fall through into the mortar tray/tub. Speaking about safety for not cutting or poking the fingers with the wire, especially with the 1/8" screen. Menards or equivalent box stores sell carpet runners by the foot. They are a type of rubber about 1/16" thick. The runners without the nobs on the bottom are the one to get. Cut them just like a picture frame and staple on top of the border of the 1/8" screen. I am happy that you are sharing the plans for making your sifting machine, I think it will have a great reaction 👍👍 Enjoy worms and have a great Day!

Captain Matt. You restore my faith in the fundamental goodwill of people engaged in their tasks and their communities. By the way I'm 76 still going strong timber framing and processing firewood and I hear you about the thinning of our old guy's skin. My arms look like a road map with all the new scars I've acquired over the past few years. But thankfully I heal as fast as I cut. I wish you and yours all the best in your wonderful work and the example you set for us old boomers. I can't thank you enough! I'll have a manual screener built ASAP.

Wow cpt Matt. I'm humbled beyond belief! I can't wait to follow your plan for farmers market n labels etc. What a time saver! I'm a simple parent of 5. A nurse.. job I don't want because im?away from my kids. I have a part time screen print business. Hurts my back. Lol and a striving farmer! Hence the worms. I want to grow more worms and replace my nursing job first. I'm passing on the screen printing to my teen kids!

Hello Captain Matt. I love your worm sifter plans and I am so greatful for you sharing them with us. I had an idea I'd like to share. I'm going to add a single strip of masking/painters tape over my hardware cloth along the edge where the castors glide over the lip of the wood so my bedding/castings don't fall onto the track. This should aid in preventing baby worms and cocoon deaths from being ran over. Aside from this, your plans are fantastic, and much appreciated! Thank you.

Captain Matt, as we all say, you are so generous! I've seen another sifter on line like this one, but not as well made. The issue for me is the trays! $7-8 trays US at Lowes are not available in Oz, only $22AU ones that are not the same size. Once I source the right trays, I'll be making a sifter as per your design, thanks! The other useful thing here was record keeping - a must as I am discovering. Looking forward to the next one.

Love the sifter… in the uk we can’t get the exact same things as you. But I think we will take the design and make something similar. As atm I’m doing it by hand in my hands and it’s back breaking work. Lol I know I’m new to this and only been d keeping worms for 6 months but I live em. I wanna set up a breakers bin today if I can so I can get them going and get some breaders separately from my farm. I think I’ll just start with a small amout as not got big tubs and want them to bread but if I try to follow what you do in 2 weeks they will have laid lids for me to harvest and go again. Then I can start a nursery for the babies.

Thanks Captain Matt! I am going to have to try this. Just sifted out a bin BY HAND and it took me a bit. I have the same mortar tubs you have and just made 2 from 1! Adults mainly in one and many babies and cocoons in the other. I am so glad we,re getting into the warmer season I HOPE! Was just 24 here in GA Monday morning and today woke to 31. Not a fan! I know you don't feel bad, your up there in the frigid north. Been binge watching your shorts. Got oat grass (clicked your link to Amazon for it) to make some pads. Not just for worms but the bunny and kitties also. Awesome video! I just found your channel and can’t stop binge watching your videos! You are a amazing for making these plans free. By far, the absolute best sifter I’ve seen so far. I just started growing organically last year and started a tiered worm bin. I think I am going to switch to buckets and the Lowe’s bins to produce more worms and more worm castings. Right now I don’t have any plans to offer worm castings to my community. But I really enjoy worm farming (it is relaxing and helps my mental health) and if I start producing a good amount of castings I plan on sharing them with friends and family so that they can enjoy the benefits of worm castings too. Keep up the good work!

I'm seeing an engineering improvement that you need to do... All that dirt that gets on the wheel rails could be prevented by extending the side inner wall of the top sifter box to ensure the dirt has no access to the rail. Doing so will prevent a need to clean the rails and wheels along the way..

Really enjoy your content It's been very helpful Today was the official first day of operation at the Earl Lee Bird's Worm Farm. I harvested about 85 gallons of castings I'm going to make a video to show you the whole operation soon.
