DIY Y2K Cami Tank Top - Easy how to thrift flip from a t shirt - Sewing Tutorial NO SERGER !
↓↓ Detailed steps bellow ↓↓
Supplies:
-t shirt
-elastic
-pins
-scissors
-2 colours of thread (put onto 2 bobbins as well)
-sewing machine
Step 1 - pin down the elastic to form the neckline and detail. Try it on
Step 2 - cut out the front piece of your cami following along the seam of the tshirt, the seam of the arm holes, and the new neckline you just created with the elastics. Leave a little extra seam allowance on the neckline because this part will be folded over and you will lose some fabric.
Step 3 - cut out a square from the back of the shirt
you will now have the two front and back pieces of your cami
Step 4 - unpin the elastic details as they were just used as a guide.
Step 5 - pin a new single piece of elastic along the neckline. RIGHT sides facing together and if your elastic has a fancy detail make sure the detail is facing down.
Step 6 - zigzag stitch the elastic down, trim excess fabric, mark center front with a pin, fold over elastic so that the fancy detail (typically picot edge) is facing up, pin down so that it is easier to iron, iron garment, and zigzag again making sure that you are using a white top thread. In this step I like to use a bobbin that matches the elastic so that it looks less messy on the inside. This is not necessary.
Step 7 - sew a diagonal straight stitch where you market the center front, this straight stitch will create the "V" of the neckline
Step 8 - pin down the decorative elastic and using a blue top thread (again, blue bobbin will show on the inside of the shirt while white will show less on the inside) zigzag stitch the elastic detail onto the shirt. Make sure to over lap the two elastics at the V of the neckline (this will later be covered by a bow)
Step 9 - attach the back and front pieces together with a white zigzag stitch. Start from the bottom hem to make sure that the two hems (that are already hemmed on the tshirt) are lined up. If the top pieces don't line up, not a problem, just trim with some scissors so they create a straight line. During this step make sure to try on the shirt, you can take it in more on the sides for a tighter fit or leave it how it is. I like to trim down the side seams to about 1cm and then do another zigzag stitch to secure.
Step 10 - now place elastic alone the sides and the back. You can decide you want to reshape the back of the cami (I made mine a little lower in the back) or leave it how it is and keep the straight across shape. copy attaching the elastic as in Step 6
Step 11 - hand stitch on the bow
Step 12 - placing right sides together straight stitch the elastic strap to the front of the cami. trim away bulk. fold so that the elastic strap is facing up and hand stitch for this to stay in place
Step 13 - try on cami and pin where you would like the back straps to lay. I like to use a straight stitch and stitch a little square to make sure the strap is on nice and secure. Trim away excess fabric to tidy it all up and you're done !

is the elastic decorative or does it affect the fit of the shirt?
@SohoSeamstress
@SohoSeamstress 4 ай бұрын
It makes the top fit more snug and allows you to continue using the stretch of the T-shirt. You could do as strictly decorative but then you would lose the stretch of the t shirt and it would fit differently ! Hope that helps 🥰

can i use normal lace and not elastic?
@SohoSeamstress
@SohoSeamstress 6 ай бұрын
You can ! If you use something with no stretch you’ll have to make the top less fitted because otherwise you won’t be able to take it on and off. But for a looser fit any lace would work !

is there a way to somehow keep the sleeves instead of the spaghetti straps :) (for people that are not comfortable showing their shoulders)
@SohoSeamstress
@SohoSeamstress Ай бұрын
yes !! you could do this as a neckline option ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXWnYqSvZ5x6os0 ). The only difference I would do is pull the elastic less so that your neckline wont be as gathered as in the top from the video I linked. I hope that helps !!

Im 16 years old and i want to be a fashion designer but i dont know how to start like should i get i job or do it myself?
@hotjanuary
@hotjanuary 2 ай бұрын
Fashion designers need to have an education in textiles, patternmaking, and the business side of fashion design (like putting together product proposals and working with factories). You need to get a post-secondary education for that knowledge (college/university). However, before you do that, get connected with fashion designer community and those who have a social media account. Ask them how their experience has been after graduating, like working for companies or opening their own business, (were they making a livable wage?) and learn why many have left the fashion design industry after a few years. See if you can’t find a local one to shadow for a few days, doing ALL the stuff, not just the fun parts. Get a realistic idea of what the experience is like (even if you can only interview them) so that you’re not carrying an idealistic view of the profession. Speak to as many as you can to get a wide range of perspectives. School is expensive, so try to get connected NOW with that community to find out if this is the path for you. Lastly, while you’re in public school, take all the available subjects so that if you change your mind later, you will have the credits to switch to another field. You don’t want to be taking supplementary courses in college that you could have taken in high school for FREE. My friend didn’t take physics in high school because it wasn’t required and she regretted it in university when she was getting her physiotherapy degree.

I agree with @hotjanuary ! It’s a really good idea to learn about the industry and see what someone already doing the job could teach you ! I went to ESMOD and learned pattern drafting and some of the people in my class were surprised with the amount of math involved. I hope you follow your goal and love it !!!!

Hii! I'm looking to get a sewing machine to make super cute clothes like this, but i'm not too sure what type to get for it. Any recommendations?
@SohoSeamstress
@SohoSeamstress 2 ай бұрын
I love my machine ! The heavy duty singer. I find that with this machine you would never really need to upgrade it. It’s great for all materials and has no problems with thick layers. It’s a medium price point. If you are just trying sewing out for the first time you could start with a more budget machine and then upgrade once you decide you love the hobby ! Hope that helps 🥰

@SohoSeamstress
@SohoSeamstress Жыл бұрын
Hi ! It would be best to find something with stretch (so that you can get a tight fitting shirt). A stretchy lace would be great ! If you can’t find anything with stretch, you’d have to make it a little looser so that you could get it on and off ! Hope that helps 🥰

@SohoSeamstress

The zigzag stitch is important in this project to create the stretch and that stitch would be time consuming without a machine. But I’d love to think of a way to do it without ! I’ll try to make another video on it !
