I don't know how I didn't find this tutorial this summer (just now found this in Facebook group DIY Kimono)! All the others were terrible. I finished making mine two days ago, but I just used a yukata that I had (too small! I'm a large woman) added inches to the sides and bottom, and duplicated what I saw seam by seam. Glad to know that my instincts were mostly right. I'm keeping this tutorial in my playlist. My friend wants a jin bei in her size and I see you have a tutorial for that as well (she is a grown woman, but she just likes them, lol). These are great! Thank you so much! Subscribed.

If you want it to be a yukata, the summer kimono, I recommend that you make it out of cotton. If it is a kimono, you can make it of wool, linen or silk, putting a lining.

Unfortunately most yukata and kimonos are one size fits most. So if a bigger size is needed, both taller and wider I'd say its just to add extra on the back and front pieces.

You can just add inches (or centimeters) to the sides of the front and back, and to the bottom, if you want a longer one. It doesn't have to be exact, I just added an inch to everything and it came out fine. Measure twice and check twice before cutting!!!

Actually how does one go about making the size adjustments - and where? Like which peices factor in the body shape of the wearer?
@ElizaArika7 жыл бұрын
Lithiel Kimonos and Yukatas usually go as one-size-fits-all. They're very big. The length can be adjusted pretty easily. Recently though, there are 'tall' size yukatas in case the regular size is too short, especially for foreigners but the difference is just the length from top to bottom. The other measurements are the same.
@Lithiel7 жыл бұрын
thank you. In my case I'm 166cm tall, so knowing what needs to change is very useful. thank you^^

I just wish to know whether your calculations included a seam allowance or not. I cut my pieces without one since I didn't see any chalk marks on yours but now with visual comparison, my pieces seem way narrower than yours. Would be nice to mention it in video or its description. 🙂

How many yards of cotton fabric and hemp fabric did you use for this project? I want to make one
@nikol_11913 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would like to ask, what is the "paper" You are giving inside the obi and ironing to the fabric?
@chillinginthenameof3 жыл бұрын
I know it's been a few months but the papery stuff appears to be iron-on interfacing. It's to add a bit of structure/stiffness to fabric without having to use extra fabric or a thicker fabric, and comes in different weights depending on whether you're making something lightweight (like a shirt) or heavier (bags, purses, etc). Hope this helps!

thanks for the video! I have an important question. I am making a custom pattern through a website, and I need to know how much fabric to buy. I researched that yukata are made with one large rectangle. What are the dimensions of the fabric you started out with before cutting?

A standard running stitch should suffice, with a 2.5-3mm length (10-14 stitches per inch). :)
