@VyvienneEaux5 жыл бұрын
I started with two snails and ended up with sooo many! Whenever I prune the plants, I put the cuttings in a bucket of water because I can pick out snails months later that were probably eggs at the time of pruning. The only problem is that they poop so much that after a water change, the gravel gets covered in snail castings within 12 hours, and they don''t seem to be touching my hair algae.

I threw just two red cherries in to my main tank after the great Betta massacre of '17. Three months later I had around one-hundred. Even with the odd one or two getting caught by my rainbows (if it moves it's food) they still breed like crazy and carpet the substrate at night. I call them water bunnies.

the Betta massacre of '17....lol. Ive been worried myself about reproduction and was going to introduce a Betta but I didnt want them all to die. Im probably pushing 100 in 2 months with 2 females already visibly pregnant again and they, the Red Cherry Shrimp, are my first inhabitants added for algae control. I know I know nutrients.....but they are handy. Its ending up turning into a shrimp only tank. I have read though that the numbers will grow to a critical mass and then supposedly the shrimp will stop breeding but Im not sure how true that is and it doesnt fully make sense to me. Time to experiment! Of course by that I mean do absolutely nothing and see how many the tank ends up holding. I have plenty other inactive tanks I can set up if it gets out of control etc.

If you want to prevent algae in these tanks, stick some guppy grass in there. A two golf ball size clump can reduce nitrates from ~40 ppm to 5 ppm in 48 hours in a 55 gallon. And phosphate to near zero. I have it in all of my aquariums (including high tech showcase)
@desylid59156 жыл бұрын
I haven't touched this aquarium other than to grab handfuls of guppy grass and cherry and crystal red shrimp to sell in weeks. Haven't done a water change in ~4 weeks or even cleaned the glass. The shrimp are reproducing like crazy. I recently changed the light and the guppy grass is a bit washed out today but it's' growing like crazy. Doubled in mass in 2 weeks. The parameters are amusingly pristine. It's not a showcase tank so I'm not concerned about it being pretty but it's easy to make the guppy grass look more decorative if desired. i.imgur.com/ajvEdoX.jpg
@bcol1276 жыл бұрын
desylid does that not steal nutrients from the other plants in the high tech tanks?
@desylid59156 жыл бұрын
@@bcol127 I was worried about that so I delayed putting it in my high tech showcase tank for months while I tried other tactics. Contrary to my concerns the growth of the other plants actually increased after the introduction of the guppy grass. I can't really explain the mechanism for that other than it seemed to be robbing the cyano and hair algae more than the anubias, ludwigia, etc. The ludwigia developed a deeper rich purple color than it had before.

This is why I love shrimp. A hundred bucks' worth of investment up front, and you have a lifetime supply of the little adorable bastards as long as you do a water change once in a while. Mike, you should've mashed that string algae into a spherical shape and called it a "Marimo Moss Ball."
@megasocky5 жыл бұрын
They detangle back though. I know because i tried turing them into a marimo but they look nothing like a legit one (they start growing horizontally in rolls rather than out vertically from a core), and they eventually unravel overtime especially if you have stuff knocking it around

I want to get back into aquariums, and Im sold on the idea of having a densely planted one . Would there be anything preventing me from (trying to) breed shrimp and then introducing a couple fish to pick off the offspring? I like the idea of having a little circle of life system going (I know both need to be fed anyway). This will most likely be in a 54-60l aquarium to keep cost down and not get in over my head.

I had a high tech aquarium with all the C02 shabang and had very little success in breeding. I switched to a low tech aquarium with overkill on the sponge filters, TETRA buffer soil, Flame moss (it grows straight up not like java moss that in my opinion just makes a mess) and Subwersitang ! That is the basic set up. I would advise using shrimp king food i used complete, protein, minerals, and baby food. and lastly which i think is a must is BACTER AE ! I think with all the differences i have saw in my aquarium i saw the biggest difference when i used bacter AE after the waterchange. Also of courese RO water with the mineral salts
@DmaaaaaxC5 жыл бұрын
One thing I would add is to know what your city water is treated with, chlorine or chloramine. I use an RO system, and if my city water was just chlorine, I could let the RO sit for a day or 2 to let the chlorine evaporate and then just add the GH/KH+, but my city uses chloromaine and this does not evaporate and is not removed with an RO system, so I typically do the following before a water change. Add Prime to the RO water and let it sit for 10min to 24hr. I add a heater and get the temp to match the tank. This also gives you a better TDS reading vs cold water. I then add GH/KH+ and TDS to the desired parameter.
